Grace of Monaco is about to premiere on the opening night of the 67th Cannes Film Festival. Olivier Dahan's sumptuously shot Grace Kelly biopic, which stars Nicole Kidman in the titular role, has had months of problems securing a release date but is finally ready to make its debut on a world stage.

The film features Kidman ('Moulin Rouge') as the titular actress-turned-princess at a critical time in her life when she is married to Prince Rainier III of Monaco (Tim Roth) but has been offered a role in Alfred Hitchcock's (Roger Ashton-Griffiths) Marnie. Grace is forced to have to choose between her new royal life and the irresistible pull of her old Hollywood film star lifestyle.

Though there has been speculation as to why Harvey Weinstein, whose company clashed with Dahan over the movie's final cut, will not be present at tonight's premiere. In a statement, the producer explains that he is away visiting two Syrian refugee camps in Jordan.

"I'm wishing Olivier, Nicole, Pierre Ange and Uday and the Grace of Monaco team all the best for the screening in Cannes tonight," says Weinstein.

The Beautifully Shot Drama Has Had Its Fair Share Of Troubles Securing A Release Date.

Unfortunately for Dahan, Kidman and the long-awaited movie, Grace of Monaco hasn't been adored by all critics who watched the first press showing of this most idyllic of real-life dramas. Referencing the failed Diana biopic, the Guardian's Peter Bradshaw states "It is a film so awe-inspiringly wooden that it is basically a fire-risk. The cringe-factor is ionospherically high" in a brutal one-star review.

Luckily, The Independent's review is less scorching, praising Kidman's turn as the iconic princess: "Kidman excels in a role in which she is called on to project glamour and suffering in equal measure." However, Geoffrey Macnab agrees with Bradshaw in his comparisons to the ill-fated Diana movie, saying "Grace Of Monaco has its share of toe-curling, Diana-style moments."

It's back to one out of five stars again for The Telegraph, which says "These are thin times for fans of Australian actresses playing European royalty." Robbie Collin sympathises with Kidman, writing "Kidman is a terrifically talented actress, but this is a role built on naivety: one of the few things she can't convincingly express."

Unfortunately, 'Grace Of Monaco' Has Fallen Victim To The Same Criticisms As 'Diana.'

"The acting is so heightened, and the script so thoroughly awful, that Dahan's idea - his big and seemingly only one - can't begin to stick," he adds. Meanwhile Empire's Phil de Semlyen said "It's an easy watch, lush, stylish... and is often side-splittingly funny," before adding damningly "The trouble is, it's not actually meant to be a comedy."

After premiering at Cannes this evening Grace of Monaco will be released on the 6th June in the UK.
