The hit talent show will be back for a 13th season next week, with a new judging panel and a potential change of venue on the way too
American Idol will be back for its thirteenth season on Tuesday, 14 January, with an (almost) entirely new judging panel holding down the reins for the long-running singing contest. Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. aren't the only new things to come out of the latest season of Idol either, as the new season may also mark the move from West to East Coast for the show.

According to various reports, with The Hollywood Reporter first generating the rumours, American Idol will dig up it's Los Angeles-based root and make the journey across country for the eventual final. After twelve years in the City of Angels, the show may be moving to the newly refurbished Madison Square Garden in New York City for its conclusive episodes, with the last two instalments of the thirteenth season scheduled for 20 and 21 May.

Lythgoe and Warwick had fallen out with show creator Simon Fuller
American Idol’s wholesale changes continues with the news that Nigel Lythgoe and his fellow producer Ken Warwick have both exited the show. In a twist, it turns out that the pair had a tiff with the show’s creator Simon Fuller.
“Both Nigel and Simon really clashed,” an insider told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column shortly before last season’s finale. “Ken and Nigel’s exit isn’t surprising…It’s hard for anyone involved in the production to get along with Fuller.” The parting has since been confirmed by The Wrap. The move comes in addition to judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson all leaving as well, with only Keith Urban awaiting his fate, these changes the result of a severe drop in ratings over the past series and with competition coming from NBC’s The Voice.
Commenting on the state of the program, Yahoo! Music Managing Editor Lyndsey Parker commented “It will return for at least a couple more seasons. Will ever be as big as it was? Honestly, no, I do not think so. ‘Idol’ no longer operates in a bubble. It operates in a saturated market, competing with ‘The Voice’ and many other shows, and even with a show on the same network, Simon Cowell's ‘X Factor,’ in a way.” Lythgoe and Warwick had been since the show since the beginning in 2002, though the former did leave in 2008 for two years.

Randy Jackson is the first of the four judges to confirm he is leaving American Idol
Randy Jackson has confirmed that he is leaving American Idol, adding credence to reports that he and the three judges, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban have been axed from the show in a dramatic shakeup. In a devastating cull, Idol bosses have decided to start over and reportedly told all four judges they would not be returning next season.
"Yo! Yo! Yo! To put all of the speculation to the rest, after 12 years of judging on American Idol I have decided it is time to leave after this season," Jackson said in a statement, "I am very proud of how we forever changed television and the music industry," he said. "It's been a life changing opportunity but I am looking forward to focusing on my company Dream Merchant 21 and other business ventures."
An insider told The Wrap on Thursday (May 9, 2013) that Fox plans to start the show from scratch after the current season came in for the worst reviews and ratings of the series so far. The website also reported how executive producer Nigel Lythgoe may not be returning, though Ryan Seacrest will probably stick around.
