Former Nine Inch Nails Musician James Woolley Dies Aged 50

Nine Inch Nails

One-time keyboardist for Nine Inch Nails James Woolley has passed away at the age of just 50 after struggling with 'significant neck and spine injuries' for some time. It's not yet been revealed what his exact cause of death was, but his passing was confirmed in a statement from his ex-wife Kate Van Buren.

Trent ReznorTrent Reznor has not yet reacted publicly to the news

Van Buren revealed the news via Facebook on Tuesday (August 16th 2016) alongside a moving obituary. Woolley is best known for playing keyboard in Trent Reznor's industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, lending his talents to their breakthrough 1994 album 'The Downward Spiral'. While his cause of death is not known, his former wife revealed that he had health complications which restricted him from certain physical activities.

'James worked hard and played hard with NIN', Van Buren said. 'He brought coolness to playing keyboards, which isn't as easy to do as playing guitar or drums.'

Woolley left the band the same year 'The Downward Spiral' was released, after just three years. He went on to play in a number of other bands, as described by Van Buren in her tribute. 'James played briefly in Rob Halford's band Two, produced music for a wide array of groups, worked on sound design for The Simpsons (those fart sounds are authentic), and worked on his own tunes for his band VOID in our home studio', she said.

Several other former members of Nine Inch Nails have taken to social media to pay tribute to their old pal. 'Rest in peace James Woolley, my old friend', Drummer Chris Vrenna wrote, while guitarist Richard Patrick lamented 'I miss my buddy.' Keyboardist Charlie Clouser, who took over after Woolley left, said: '#RIPJamesWoolley My predecessor in NIN, a truly kind man. Such a sad day.'

Woolley is survived by his three children with Van Buren - Brendan, Mary and Anne - and his funeral is due to be held in Glenview, Illinois near where he lived on Saturday (August 20th 2016).

Trent Reznor has voiced his extreme disappointment after his performance with Nine Inch Nails at last night's Grammy Awards was cut short by the ceremony's organisers. The NIN frontman had been playing live with his band, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Queens Of The Stone Age and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham when the closing credits began to roll on the televised coverage, effectively cutting of the unique performance from millions of fans.

"Music's biggest night... to be disrespected. A heartfelt F**K YOU guys," a disgruntled Reznor tweeted after learning of the Grammys producers' decision to curtail the live coverage. Rock fans watching the show were similarly outraged and sent a barrage of tweets directed at the Grammys organisers. The supergroup had already instilled awe with a rendition of NIN's 'Copy of A' when the rock legends' performance was cut short mid-way through the recent QOTSA hit 'My God Is The Sun.'

Bieber Banged Up For Druggy Drag Racing: Justin Bieber has just had the mother of all terrible fortnights. The recalcitrant popstar was under investigation for a vicious egg attack on his neighbor's home by police who discovered drugs upon raiding Bieber's abode. The 'Baby' singer headed snowboarding with his equally rebellious chums with the threat of deportment looming. The singer was then arrested yesterday for DUI and drag racing in Miami.

Bieber showed what a true hard-ass he really was when police stopped him and he immediately snitched on himself, saying he was drunk and high on weed and prescription medication. The 19 year-old was released from a Miami jail an hour after a Miami judge, set a "standard" $2,500 bond Thursday afternoon. The widely-circulated mugshot shows the fallen star grinning ear-to-ear in his orange prison v-neck, prompting Seth Rogen to brand him "a piece of s**t."

Headlining this amazing festival in Asheville, North Carolina on the last weekend of October (25th-27th 2013) is Nine Inch Nails; unsurprisingly, given their impressive headlining record this year which includes Lollapalooza, Leeds & Reading Festival, Outside Lands and Rock en Seine. Also scraping the top of the bill are Bassnectar and Pretty Lights, but there's something particularly British about a good chunk of the bands that follow.

It seems a long, long time since Disclosure’s first single Offline Dexterity, though the British electronic duo have gone from strength to strength in recent years and finally released their debut album, Settle, on PMR Records on June 2, 2013.It was met with both commercial and critical success, including a score of 9.1 from the notoriously picky musos at Pitchfork – no mean feat.

Sure, we’d rather see Disclosure in a club - perhaps in the early hours of the morning – though Lollapalooza-goers will have to settle for 6pm at The Grove, on Friday (August 2, 2013). Saying that, both Guy and Howard will be DJ’ing at The Mid club in Chicago’s West Town from 10pm on Friday.

Industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails have teamed up with prolific filmmaker David Lynch for their new music video for 'Came Back Haunted.' After going on hiatus in 2009, the band's return was announced by lead singer Trent Reznor in February 2013, along with a worldwide festival and arena tour.

Nine Inch Nails Mark Their Return With 'Came Back Haunted.'

In typical NIN fashion, the video is about as disturbing as it can be (see also: the universally banned Broken EP videos), showing shaky images of singer/guitarist/wizard of weird Trent Reznor spliced over an image of what looks like a flobberworm. Add in a red/white flashing screen, a particularly evil eye and strange gas mask-wearing spidergirl images, and you have a pretty good accompaniment for the dark subject matter of NIN's songs. "They put something inside of me/The smile is red and its eyes are black/I don't think I'll be coming back," sings Reznor atop trademark fuzzy guitars and synthesised 'oohs.' The song is catchy and the video is strangely hypnotising - a simple idea that gets under your skin, making you look around to see if anyone's lurking behind you.

Nine Inch Nails' Secret Album - Trent Reznor Reveals All

Trent Reznor Nine Inch Nails

For a band with such an ample and dedicated following, it’s pretty amazing that frontman and founder Trent Reznor managed to keep their secret album under wraps until now.

Having devastated their fans with news of a split back in 2009, NIN are ready for more, and have hit their fans with the best surprise they could have hoped for. "I've been less than honest about what I've really been up to lately," Reznor explained in a statement to MTV News. "For the last year I've been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly f---ing great." Well, there you have it, not only was the album a secret, but it’s so good, it’s got Reznor swearing. Now, having dipped into visual media, he’s ready to take the Nails back on tour with this new record. "This is the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again," he continued. "My forays into film, HTDA and other projects really stimulated me creatively and I decided to focus that energy on taking Nine Inch Nails to a new place. Here we go!"

The band will hit Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Leeds, Reading, Made In America and the Voodoo Festival as well as the Fuji Rock Festival in Naeba, Japan.

Eclectic Made In America Festival Headlined By Beyonce And Nine Inch Nails

Beyonce Knowles Nine Inch Nails Jay Z

The Made In America Festival has announced its line-up for this year’s festival and once again they’ve got Jay Z on curating duties. The rap god may not be performing himself this year but he has enlisted the help of his good wife Beyonce (or should we call her Mrs Carter now?) to headline one of the days, as well as Nine Inch Nails, in what looks to be a pretty eclectic mix of pop, dance, rock and hip-hop.

The festival will take place on August 31 and September 1, 2013 and tickets went on sale yesterday (April 10, 2013) to American Express cardmembers and fans of the Budweiser Made In America Facebook page, Billboard.com have reported. The limited sale continues until April 16 and the following day, tickets will be more widely available on public sale. Explaining the diverse mix of talent that will be performing at the festival, Paul Chibe, Budweiser’s V of Marketing said “The point of having that diversity in our music lineup we’re trying to expose the people to different types of music… Much like last year, where if you never saw Pearl Jam but you're a Jay-Z fan, we want fans of Beyonce or Calvin Harris or Wiz Khalifa to have the opportunity to see Nine Inch Nails or stuff they might have seen for awhile like Public Enemy. That eclectic mix creates an opportunity for us to really show the impact of music and culture.”

In addition to the headliners, festival goers will be able to catch Queens of the Stone Age, Deadmau5, Phoenix, Calvin Harris, Empire of the Sun, Imagine Dragons, Wiz Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Miguel, Public Enemy, Nero, 2 Chainz, Gaslight Anthem and Aluna George, amongst others.

In Light Of Courtney Love Covering Jay Z's '99 Problems': Five Most Unlikely Cover Versions

Courtney Love doesn’t have much of a track record when it comes to cover versions. With her band Hole, she would often play a version of Guns N Roses’ ‘Paradise City’ that she would abandon half way through. Same goes for Depeche Mode’s ‘Hungry Like A Wolf,’ though the band did release a brilliant cover of Velvet Underground’s ‘Pale Blue Eyes,’ it has to be said.

When we heard that Courtney Love covered Jay Z’s ’99 Problems,’ though, we feared for the worst. And, sadly, our fears were confirmed. “This either sucks or it’s genius, I don’t know,” she said as she introduced the song at her impromptu Sundance Film Festival set.
