Kiss And (Almost) Make Up At Nirvana Hall Of Fame Induction

Nirvana Kiss

Thursday’a Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was an emotional event in more ways than one. Not only was the late Kurt Cobain inducted into the hall of fame (with former bandmates Dave Grohl and Chris Novoselik present), but the members of Kiss, all four of them, found it an appropriate time to finally kiss and make up, pun intended.

Nirvana
The induction aptly coincided with the 20th anniversary of Cobain's death.

According to the NY Daily News, it was Gene Simmons, who initiated the touching moment during his speech. “I’m just here to say a few kind words about the four knuckleheads who made this,” said Gene Simmons, as the three others looked on, happily. At least it seemed so at the time. You’d think the feud between Simmons and Paul Stanley, and the other original players, Ace Frehley and Peter Kriss would end there, right? Wrong. It was a nice first step, but the band still didn’t perform together, which means there’s probably some more making up to do.

Journalist Richard Lee, a Kurt Cobain death conspiracy theorist, has opened a lawsuit against the Seattle police. Lee alleges recently published photographs taken at the scene of Cobain's death should have been made public before now.

Nirvana
The anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death has prompted a investigation into the case.

Lee believes Cobain was murdered although the general belief is that he committed suicide. There were numerous incidents throughout 1994 which suggested he was suicidal and he was hospitalised on more than one occasion. Lee's foundation for his belief in Cobain's murder rests on the Nirvana frontman's use of a shotgun and the three days between his death and the discovery of the body.

There could be a Kurt Cobain musical in the works. Well, that's if you believe what the late Nirvana frontman's widow Courtney Love is currently suggesting. There are certain things in life that don’t sound like they should ever go together, but then you put them together and...they just do. Peanut butter and jelly, French fries dipped in chocolate milkshakes, Justin Bieber and Slipknot. Huh? Yep, you heard us right! Some musical masters out there are just capable of seeing the potential for a great/totally bonkers mash-up song, when the rest of us could never imagine mixing two totally different artists together.  The result can be oddly hypnotic and scarily addictive.  Take these mad, but surprisingly great, mash-ups for example.

Could The Kurt Cobain Museum Really Happen?

Kurt Cobain Nirvana

Three weeks ago journalist Jamie Dunkie launched a campaign to raise money for the purchase of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s childhood home, in order to turn it into a museum. So far, however, the campaign has only managed to raise around $130 dollars. This comes during a wave of new tributes to the singer in the 20th year after his death. Aberdeen mayor Bill Simpson has recently said he hopes that Cobain’s hometown will be ‘just as big as Graceland eventually.’ But is a Cobain museum really likely and above all, necessary?

Kurt Cobain NirvanaNirvana frontman Kurt Cobain died 20 years ago

It’s been 20 years since Kurt Cobain, the frontman of grunge icons Nirvana passed away and unsurprisingly this year has marked a wave of new tributes to the prolific singer. On February 20th, Aberdeen, Washington, where Cobain was born, held its first ‘Kurt Cobain Day’, where a statue of the singer was unveiled. The rather underwhelming event along with the statue, which features Cobain depicted shedding a single tear ,was part of a campaign spearheaded by the city’s mayor to make up for lost time in honouring the grunge pioneer. It also prompted the city of Hoquiam, also in Washington, where Cobain briefly lived, to announce their own ‘Kurt Cobain’ day which is scheduled for April 10th, five days after the 20th anniversary of his death. On that day, April 10th, Cobain is set to receive an greater honour when Nirvana finally get inducted into the ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’.

However, after almost three weeks the crowd-funding campaign has attracted only $135 in donations.

Kurt was the quintessential grunge rocker, sadly he struggled with depression and heroin addiction and was found dead at his Lake Washington home on April 8, 1994, with an apparent gun shot wound to the head. Cobain was just 27 when he died, joining the infamous ’27 Club’, a group of musicians who have all died at the age of 27. Nirvana - In Utero: 20th Anniversary Edition Album Review

In a recent NPR interview, Dave Grohl described the different methods used to record 'Nevermind' and 'In Utero'. Butch Vig had laboured over multiple takes for the former to produce an album that would define a generation. On the latter, Steve Albini had encouraged Cobain, Grohl and Novoselic to record songs in one take if possible, and to avoid overdubs. The result was a more abrasive set of recordings and a more accurate reflection of Nirvana's power on stage. The 20th anniversary edition of 'In Utero' attempts to restore that vision, by providing an alternative view of what turned out to be Cobain's final studio statement. While not quite as exhaustive as the anniversary edition of 'Nevermind', in many ways 'In Utero' gains more from this treatment than its predecessor did.

Nirvana - In Utero Album Review

Recorded in two weeks at Pachyderm Studios in Minnesota during February of 1993, 'In Utero' was a reaction to the overwhelming popularity of 'Nevermind'. Producer Steve Albini set the band a simple challenge: "bang a record out in a couple of days, with high quality, but 'minimal' production and no interference from the front office bulletheads." Indeed, Albini's full letter to the band can be found in the liner notes for this re-issue; as a blueprint for the record, it makes fascinating reading. The anticipation of record company pressure and an unspoken obligation to Nirvana's burgeoning audience led to some changes from that original vision, though. Scott Litt who'd been working with R.E.M. was called in to overhaul the likes of 'Pennyroyal Tea', 'Heart Shaped Box' and 'All Apologies'. The album that eventually emerged was therefore 90% of the Albini mixes with additions like double tracked vocals thrown in for good measure. For the first time, then, this anniversary edition presents all the options that were considered, allowing the full set of Albini tracks to see the light of day.

They are admittedly more visceral and arresting, but that's not why this edition of 'In Utero' is indispensable to anyone that's ever engaged with the record. Albini, Grohl and Novoselic have re-entered the studio and remixed the album from scratch using the original tape sources. It may sound like overkill, but it really makes a difference. The 2013 version of 'In Utero' utilises unheard guitar tracks ('Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle' springs to mind), alternate vocal takes and eliminates some of the studio polish that cluttered up the original mix. 'Dumb', for example, sounds even more stripped back and heartfelt, and while there's still cello to be found, it's far less obtrusive. While it obviously doesn't have the input of Cobain, for all intents and purposes, this is the definitive mix of 'In Utero'. It's in no way superfluous and doesn't cause you to play a never-ending game of spot the difference. Instead, it presents a record that sounds substantially different, and all the better for it.

Jay-Z Reveals Lyrics To Justin Timberlake Featuring, Nirvana Sampling Song 'Holy Grail'

Jay Z Justin Timberlake Courtney Love Nirvana

As we all know, Jay-Z‘s new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, will be arriving in the very near future and so far we've heard a few details about the album, but on the whole we're still waiting on something, anything, that can indicate where the album will go musically. The tracklist didn't change this, but things will change on Tuesday (June 25) when Jay releases the album's first single, 'Holy Grail,' and in the meantime Hova has been kind enough to leak some information surrounding the track.

As we've already heard from Courtney Love, one of the tracks on the album will feature lyrics from the Nirvana track 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' however what she didn't tell us was what the track might sound like or what it would be called, but with a day to spare we've now know which lyric was used and where it will be, not to mention who will be appearing on the track too. Fresh off the success of working together on 'Suit & Tie,' Justin Timberlake - who is singing the Nirvana line - will show up to sing the hook and do some crooning as well.

Timberlake sings; "and we're all just/entertainers/and we're stupid/and contagious," on the hook, following on from Jay's line; "I know nobody to blame/Kurt Cobain/I did it to myself."

Paris Jackson's shock suicide attempt yesterday (5th June) left her in hospital last night.

She reportedly sliced her arm with a cleaver knife and took an overdose of painkillers after a relative forbade her from attending Marilyn Manson's rock concert in Los Angeles.

The 15 year-old daughter of Michael Jackson also rang a suicide hotline after she left a note to her family and was later found unconscious.

Dave Grohl's Sound City Might Turn Into An Unexpected Success

Dave Grohl Nirvana

Dave Grohl, he of Nirvana and Foo Fighters fame, has made a film. It centers around a recording studio and a particular piece of equipment from the 70s, according to the Associated Press, and despite the sound of that premise, Sound City is actually, apparently, a solid film about the human element in making music. The flick premiered at the Sundance Film Festival – that means it’s got to be good, right? - and centers around the Sound City recording studio in Van Nuys, California, where Grohl recorded the legendary Nevermind with Nirvana in 1991.

The band were sent to the nondescript studio by their record company, which wanted the musicians close by, so that they could be kept an eye on. Apparently, the band were unimpressed by the small studio in a slummy neighborhood, before noticing all the gold records lining the walls by bands and artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Van Halen, REO Speedwagon, Guns 'n Roses, Neil Young, Cheap Trick, Slayer, Rick Springfield and more. From then on, the band fell in love with the studio’s crisp, clear sound of the place.

"You might have never heard of Nirvana if we had recorded in Hollywood with a fancy producer who made us sound like Def Leppard," he said. "The fact that that (sound) board made us sound like us is what people appreciated. To be reunited with it, honestly, it was like meeting your real parents for the first time." And now, two decades later, Grohl has finally managed to pay homage to that studio. Sound City hits theatres this Friday.

In Light Of Courtney Love Covering Jay Z's '99 Problems': Five Most Unlikely Cover Versions

Courtney Love Jay Z Rolf Harris Led Zeppelin Manic Street Preachers Rihanna Leona Lewis Nine Inch Nails Sid Vicious Frank Sinatra Take That Nirvana

Courtney Love doesn’t have much of a track record when it comes to cover versions. With her band Hole, she would often play a version of Guns N Roses’ ‘Paradise City’ that she would abandon half way through. Same goes for Depeche Mode’s ‘Hungry Like A Wolf,’ though the band did release a brilliant cover of Velvet Underground’s ‘Pale Blue Eyes,’ it has to be said.

When we heard that Courtney Love covered Jay Z’s ’99 Problems,’ though, we feared for the worst. And, sadly, our fears were confirmed. “This either sucks or it’s genius, I don’t know,” she said as she introduced the song at her impromptu Sundance Film Festival set.

Albums of Note... Rihanna’s seventh studio album, Unapologetic has been met with a mixed response and our reviewer reckons the Barbadian pop star phoned this one in. As her career becomes more of a marketing cash cow than an artistic endeavour, so her albums impress less and less.

Of course, there is also the ‘elephant’ that seems to appear in every room Rihanna walks into… an elephant known as ‘Chris Brown.’ He makes an appearance on the album, duetting with RhiRhi on a track called ‘Nobody’s Business.’ “Fun: it's something that's lacking a lot in this album, Unapologetic rattling on machine-like but with very little given away to the spirit of enjoyment… She doesn't have to feel apologetic for anything, but what's more concerning is that Rihanna doesn't seem to feel anything anymore, something all too apparent on this turgid LP.”

Courtney Love Is Against Paul McCartney Fronting Nirvana In Place Of Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain Courtney Love Sir Paul McCartney Dave Grohl Nirvana

Courtney Love, Kurt Kobain's widow and mother of his only child, has expressed her distaste at the appointment of Paul McCartney to be the front man of a Nirvana reunion at the 12-12-12 charity gig in New York, on Wednesday.

The show was all for charity, to support the victims of Hurricane Sandy, for Courtney Love, it's just not cool that McCartney has taken Kurt's place, reports TMZ. "Look, if John were alive it would be cool." She said. She also objects to the reference to the gig as a 'Nirvana reunion' because she says, without Kurt, it's not Nirvana. We can certainly see where she's coming from, but for a band as well loved as Nirvana, a 'reunion' regardless of its authenticity never stops being a tribute to Kurt and will always provide an arena for fans to remember him and the band.

McCartney, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have been 'jamming' together for a while in secret and have even written some songs together. Speaking to the audience at the 12-12-12 concert McCartney said: "Recently, some guys asked me to go jam with them... So I showed up, like you do, ready to jam. And in the middle of it, these guys kept going, 'We haven't played together for years.' So the penny finally dropped, I finally understood I was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion." Reports the LA Times.

Standing Out From The Crowd: Katie Holmes And Blake Lively Stuning At Sandy Relief Concert 12-12-12

Katie Holmes Blake Lively Tom Cruise Rolling Stones Sir Paul McCartney Nirvana Bruce Springsteen

Katie Holmes and Blake Lively were in danger of stealing the limelight from the host of rockers performing at last night’s Concert For Sandy Relief at New York’s Madison Square Garden (December 12, 2012). Even Kanye West turning up in a skirt couldn’t upstage these two glamour-pusses, who were all a-shimmer for the big event.

Holmes may be a recent divorcee at 33 and Lively a newlywed at 25, but the pair of them looked equally happy last night. Katie chose to wear a figure-hugging purple dress with velvet panels, designed by Tom Ford, suiting her own classic style down to the ground (well, down to the knees anyway). US Magazine have pictured Tom Cruise’s ex looking relaxed at the charity concert, which featured The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney & Nirvana and Bruce Springsteen, among others and she wore her hair loose, neatly accessorised with black pointy heels. Blake went for a studded red leather mini-dress, designed by Isabel Marant and nude caged ankle boots, designed by Christian Louboutin.

Blake, who recently married Ryan Reynolds, has been keeping a low profile of late, though she and her new husband had been spotted enjoying a break in Paris at the start of this month. Both Katie and Blake were looking stunning last night; they almost put some of the musicians to shame when it came to grabbing the limelight.

Yesterday’s Concert For Sandy Relief (December 12, 2012) turned into a year’s worth of rock and pop headlines, all rolled into one. Not only were some of the coolest kids on the block performing (Alicia Keys, we’re looking at you), but they were doing it in tabloid-seeking style (Kanye West in a skirt, anyone?). However, it was the older statesmen of rock and roll that really grabbed the nations’ attention last night.

First up, Sir Paul McCartney, formerly of The Beatles and now, apparently… of Nirvana? Well, maybe not quite. But Sir Paul did perform with the surviving members of Nirvana – Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, playing a new song that they had composed together, entitled ‘Cut Me Some Slack.’ It was part of a wider set performed by McCartney and allayed the fears of devout Nirvana fans, concerned that they would be performing a set of Nirvana covers, with McCartney taking the place of the late Kurt Cobain.

The Rolling Stones made an impressive, if brief, performance, playing ‘You Got Me Rocking’ and ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ before leaving the Madison Square Garden gathered crowd wanting more. Mick Jagger’s seemingly unending reserves of energy put many of the other performers to shame, even if he didn’t have to exert quite the same degree of stamina that he has had to at the band’s recent 2 hour 50th anniversary shows. “Homestate hero” Bruce Springsteen was described by New York Times as “the master of the socially conscious message that’s also a full-tilt rock concert” and last night, he didn’t disappoint. The evening ended on a rousing note, with Alicia Keys joined by a stage full of firefighters to sing ‘Empire State Of Mind Part II,’ with its appropriate chorus of “This is New York… concrete jungle where dreams are made of.”

Foo Fighters Hiatus Confirmed By Dave Grohl

Foo Fighters Dave Grohl Nirvana Them Crooked Vultures Queens Of The Stone Age

After hinting that the Foo Fighters will be going on hiatus at last weekend's Global Citizen Festival in New York, Dave Grohl has confirmed this on the band's Facebook page in a warm letter to fans.

At Saturday's concert Dave Grohl said that he wanted to make the most of their performance as he was unsure when they would be performing together again. In his letter on Facebook he said “Yes... I was serious. I'm not sure when the Foo Fighters are going to play again”. But, do not despair! He followed this up by saying “I never want to NOT be in this band. So, sometimes it's good to just... put it back in the garage for a while...” He also referred to the band as his 'family', his 'life' and his 'world'.

Grohl also encouraged fans that they would all see more of his work very soon, as the hiatus allows him to work on his latest project, a documentary called 'Sound City' which he referred to as the “most important project [he's] ever worked on.”

Nirvana Manager: Courtney Love Led To Band's Downfall

Nirvana Courtney Love Kurt Cobain Saturday Night Live

Danny Goldberg, former manager of Nirvana, has said Courtney Love was a toxic presence among the band.

Love married Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain in 1992, with the couple having a daughter, Frances Bean, before Cobain's suicide in 1994.

And according to Goldberg, Love had an instrumental role in Cobain's struggles with heroin and acted as the frontman's "mouthpiece".

"Courtney's very presence was a metaphor for the end of one era in the band's life and the beginning of another," he writes in his upcoming book Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside the Rock And Roll Business.

Goldberg discusses an incident in which he delivered money to the couple, believing they were about to spend it on heroin.

"The weekend in January 1992 that Nirvana did Saturday Night Live for the first time was a turning point that put into focus the heroin problem that was to haunt Kurt for the rest of his life.

"Courtney called me at home the morning the show aired," Goldberg continues in an excerpt, reproduced at Spinner.com, "and asked me to get Kurt $5,000 (£2,800) in cash so they could do some 'shopping'.

"I felt pretty uncomfortable as I delivered the package of $100 (£56) bills to her [Love] at the hotel," he explains.

"Abruptly, the dark cloud of drug excess had entered the band's life. I was confronted by the baroque facade of lies and the awful glassy-eyed deadness that regular heroin use provides."

Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside the Rock and Roll Business is released in the US on Thursday September 18th.
