Spencer Elden was just four months old when he shot the iconic album cover.
The naked swimming baby from the cover of Nirvana’s classic Nevermind album has recreated the cover’s iconic image, all grown-up. Spencer Elden was just a few months old when he shot the photo for the album’s cover and now he’s celebrating 25 years since its release.

In a week overshadowed by the death of Peaches Geldof, Mickey Rooney & Ultimate Warrior, we sought solace in action movies and rock music.
"#RIPPeaches": So went the hashtag that thousands of Twitter users used to pay tribute to the late Peaches Geldof, who was found dead in her Kent home on Monday with her baby son playing nearby. It's still not known how the 25 year-old mother-of-two suddenly passed away but her distraught family, including father Bob Geldof, have been given the body to plan a funeral whilst the toxicology test results come back. The Boomtown Rats star also lead the tributes to his "beautiful" daughter - read here. Peaches Geldof: 1989 - 2014.
Farewell Mickey Rooney: Screen legend and former child star Mickey Rooney passed away last Sunday at home in California after a long illness. Known for his unforgettable roles in Night at the Museum, Breakfast at Tiffany's and National Velvet, the 93 year-old was still making plans to appear in more movies and lived up to his positive "Don't retire - inspire" mantra. An ugly dispute over Rooney's burial and will has erupted since the death but will hopefully soon be calmed so that Hollywood can honour one of its most prolific figures. Read our obituary here. Mickey Rooney: 1920 - 2014.
Even the grand occasion couldn't make Kiss set their differences aside.
Thursday’a Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was an emotional event in more ways than one. Not only was the late Kurt Cobain inducted into the hall of fame (with former bandmates Dave Grohl and Chris Novoselik present), but the members of Kiss, all four of them, found it an appropriate time to finally kiss and make up, pun intended.
The induction aptly coincided with the 20th anniversary of Cobain's death.
According to the NY Daily News, it was Gene Simmons, who initiated the touching moment during his speech. “I’m just here to say a few kind words about the four knuckleheads who made this,” said Gene Simmons, as the three others looked on, happily. At least it seemed so at the time. You’d think the feud between Simmons and Paul Stanley, and the other original players, Ace Frehley and Peter Kriss would end there, right? Wrong. It was a nice first step, but the band still didn’t perform together, which means there’s probably some more making up to do.

Both bands did Lithium - one of Nirvana's most iconic tracks.
Saturday night marked the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death. The Nirvana frontman commited suicide on April 5, 1994. Predictably, Nirvana tributes were abundant over the weekend. In Sao Paolo, Brazil Muse managed to do justice to the 1991 single Lithium for the crowd at Lollapalooza.
Saturday marked the 20th anniversary of Cobain's death. He was found on April 8, 1994.
Muse started performing together 20 years ago - the same year that Cobain commited suicide, as Matthew Bellamy helpfully reminded the crowd.
Richard Lee, who believes Kurt Cobain was murdered, has filed a lawsuit against the Seattle police which alleges they have been "uncooperative" in his investigations. The suit follows the recent discovery of images from Cobain's death scene.
Journalist Richard Lee, a Kurt Cobain death conspiracy theorist, has opened a lawsuit against the Seattle police. Lee alleges recently published photographs taken at the scene of Cobain's death should have been made public before now.
The anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death has prompted a investigation into the case.
Lee believes Cobain was murdered although the general belief is that he committed suicide. There were numerous incidents throughout 1994 which suggested he was suicidal and he was hospitalised on more than one occasion. Lee's foundation for his belief in Cobain's murder rests on the Nirvana frontman's use of a shotgun and the three days between his death and the discovery of the body.
No-one could imagine that Justin Bieber and Slipknot would ever combine to make musical magic together, but someone did it and it was pretty great. These other mad mash-ups work too, against all odds.
There are certain things in life that don’t sound like they should ever go together, but then you put them together and...they just do. Peanut butter and jelly, French fries dipped in chocolate milkshakes, Justin Bieber and Slipknot. Huh? Yep, you heard us right! Some musical masters out there are just capable of seeing the potential for a great/totally bonkers mash-up song, when the rest of us could never imagine mixing two totally different artists together. The result can be oddly hypnotic and scarily addictive. Take these mad, but surprisingly great, mash-ups for example.
You’d never imagine that Carly Rae Jepsen, she of super cheesy ‘Call Me Maybe’ fame, could ever be teamed up with industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails and the result not make you want to claw your ears off. Call Me a Hole, the Carley Rae Jepsen vs. Nine Inch Nails mash-up is surprisingly easy listening. The poppy beats of Miss Swift behind Trent Reznor’s recognisable rasp kind of works, perhaps these guys could actually get together for a legitimate collaboration one day!

As the 20th anniversary of Cobain's death approaches, sombre new photos have been released.
Dramatic unseen photos from the scene of Kurt Cobain's death have been released, depicting not only the late Nirvana frontman's suicide note but also his drugs paraphernalia. Photos from the scene began to be released last by Seattle police and feature of the scene of Cobain's death on April 5, 1994, featuring what appears to be drug paraphernalia, as well as pair of sunglasses, a pack of cigarettes, a towel and a wallet, via MTV News.
2014 Is A Momentous Year For Remembering Seattle Rockers, Nirvana.
On Friday (March 28), several more images have surfaced, including photos of Cobain's suicide note, which was found in a planter in the greenhouse impaled by a pen. The photos' release comes as the 20th anniversary of Cobain's death nears as well as 25 years since the release of the grunge rockers' debut album, Bleach. To mark a quarter of a century since the record's release, the band will finally be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.
Marilyn rubbing suncream on to Tupac's chest and Lennon jamming with Cobain: Radler's surreal new advert.
A new European beer commercial from the Radler brand has caused controversy across the world in countries where the advert's dark sense of humour doesn't sit well. The television commercial shows a bunch of dead celebrities, including Bruce Lee, John Lennon and Marilyn Monroe, chilling out, drinking beers on a desert island and hiding whenever a ship passes.
Marilyn Monroe Is One Of The Dead Celebrities Featured In The New Radler Advert.
The clip begins with a white-haired Elvis being given a beer by a beach babe waitress, who he eyes up as she struts away past an aging Marilyn Monroe rubbing suncream into Tupac Shakur's torso. The waitress reaches the bar where Kurt Cobain is strumming on his guitar whilst hanging out with John Lennon, who says "Hey Jude," whilst paying the peace sign - perhaps because the actor didn't really look like Lennon at all.
The report turned out to be false, based on a police check of some minor evidence, related to the case.
The morbid fascination with celebrity deaths seems never ending. This week it’s Kurt Cobain’s turn under the spotlight – one more time – as rumors that Seattle police are reopening the Nirvana frontman’s murder case started circulating online on Thursday. They’re not, for all you conspiracy theorists out there. They most definitely aren’t, as the Washington Post reports, but read on to find out how the whole thing started.
Two decades later, Cobain's death still holds a morbid fascination for some people.
It was a report from a local news channel in Seattle, KIRO 7 that first sparked the rumors. The news channel aired a report claiming that Seattle police were “reexamining the case.”
Jamie Dunie wants to convert Kurt Cobain's childhood home into a museum, good idea or highly unlikely?
Three weeks ago journalist Jamie Dunkie launched a campaign to raise money for the purchase of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s childhood home, in order to turn it into a museum. So far, however, the campaign has only managed to raise around $130 dollars. This comes during a wave of new tributes to the singer in the 20th year after his death. Aberdeen mayor Bill Simpson has recently said he hopes that Cobain’s hometown will be ‘just as big as Graceland eventually.’ But is a Cobain museum really likely and above all, necessary?
Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain died 20 years ago
It’s been 20 years since Kurt Cobain, the frontman of grunge icons Nirvana passed away and unsurprisingly this year has marked a wave of new tributes to the prolific singer. On February 20th, Aberdeen, Washington, where Cobain was born, held its first ‘Kurt Cobain Day’, where a statue of the singer was unveiled. The rather underwhelming event along with the statue, which features Cobain depicted shedding a single tear ,was part of a campaign spearheaded by the city’s mayor to make up for lost time in honouring the grunge pioneer. It also prompted the city of Hoquiam, also in Washington, where Cobain briefly lived, to announce their own ‘Kurt Cobain’ day which is scheduled for April 10th, five days after the 20th anniversary of his death. On that day, April 10th, Cobain is set to receive an greater honour when Nirvana finally get inducted into the ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’.

Kurt Cobain's childhood home is up for sale - but will it become a museum?
A group of Nirvana supporters led by the journalist Jaime Dunkle have launched a campaign to turn frontman Kurt Cobain's childhood home in Washington into a museum. The fans hope to raise $700,000 to purchase and convert the bungalow, which was recently listed for sale. However, after almost three weeks the crowd-funding campaign has attracted only $135 in donations.

"[I'm] confident it's only a matter of time before people start donating," Dunkle told the Palm Beach New Times, explaining that donators will be eligible for prizes including museum memberships, t-shirts and "a pair of tickets to the sold-out Die Antwoord show in Portland".

Kurt Cobain's ex-roommate is selling the grunge rockers possessions on the internet, we look back and remember the troubled Nirvana frontman.
News that Kurt Cobain’s former roommate is flogging the deceased Nirvana frontman’s belongings on the internet has temporarily brought Kurt’s name back from the dead. Cobain committed suicide in 1994, but enthusiasm for the singer’s music has never waned, while Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind remains one of the best-selling albums of all time.
Kurt was just 27 when he commited suicide
Kurt was the quintessential grunge rocker, sadly he struggled with depression and heroin addiction and was found dead at his Lake Washington home on April 8, 1994, with an apparent gun shot wound to the head. Cobain left a suicide note in which he famously claimed ‘It’s better to burn out that to fade away’, lyrics taken from Neil Young’s 1979 song Hey Hey, My My. Cobain was just 27 when he died, joining the infamous ’27 Club’, a group of musicians who have all died at the age of 27. Other members of this sad group include Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse and Jim Morrison.
The late Nirvana rocker's hometown mark the occasion.
The first annual Kurt Cobain Day has been celebrated by residents of the Washington town, Aberdeen, where the late Nirvana frontman was born and lived for much of his life. It has been nearly 20 years since the singer and guitarist took his own life due to heroin addiction and depression but residents of the town now feel that the time is right to mark Cobain's birthday every year.
Kurt Cobain Day Will Become An Annual Event To Mark The Birthday Of The Nirvana Frontman.
"Aberdeen residents may justifiably take pride in the role our community played in the life of Kurt Cobain," said mayor Bill Simpson recently, as he officially confirmed the celebration, adding, "the international recognition our community has gained from its connections with Kurt Cobain and his artistic achievements," via The Independent.
The acts have been announced for a rock-tastic Grammys finale.
Nine Inch Nails, Queens Of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham have all been announced to play at the finale of the upcoming 56th annual Grammy Awards, which will take place on Sunday.
Nine Inch Nails Have Been Confirmed To Play At The Grammys This Year.
Such a gathering of alt-rock icons will represent a Grammys first for QOTSA and Nine Inch Nails, true rock 'n' roll leviathans. "We're incredibly excited about this number," Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich said in a statement, via SPIN. "There's nothing better than when the Grammys can rock out, and to have these artists all together on one stage, doing a number that, when they presented it to us, knocked us out, is going to turn out to be one of those Grammy moments that people talk about for a long time. Long live Trent, Josh, Dave and Lindsey and these great bands!" Ehrlich added.
The surviving Beatles will perform at the ceremony and fans are hoping the two will join each other on stage for a reunion performance
Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are set to perform at this years 56th Grammy Awards, with their inclusion to the Grammys set list being announced this week by the music awards showcase. Although the organisers for the event have revealed that the pair will perform, they have yet to specify whether the two will appear on stage together at all, a prospect that most are hoping for.
Paul and Ringo will hopefully be performing together
The pair were announced as two of the latest confirmed acts to appear at the awards show, with fellow performers John Legend, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Sara Bareilles and Carole King also added to the bill.
Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt will also be honoured, with the E Street Band, Brian Epstein and Andrew Loog Oldham will receive special awards
The inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's class of 2014 have been chosen, with Nirvana, Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall And Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt all being honoured in the latest induction. As well as these, the E Street Band will be presented with the Award for Musical Excellence at the ceremony, with Beatles manager Brian Epstein and original Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham also being honoured as non-performers.
Nirvana have been honoured at the first time of asking
For Nirvana, their induction comes at the first time of asking, with the band only becoming eligible for induction this year. According to the rules of the Hall of Fame, an artist only becomes eligible for recognition 25 years after the release of their first album or single. For Nirvana, their first single came in 1988 with the release of 'Love Buzz,' with their induction coming as "no surprise" to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO Joel Peresman or many other people for that matter.
Nirvana deserves its place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its annual list of nominees on Wednesday (October 16, 2013),with grunge legends Nirvana the most notable of the 16 potential candidates. Almost 20 years after frontman Kurt Cobain's death, the Seattle rockers will almost certainly take their place alongside Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley in the hallowed halls of the famous museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

Others considered for entry this year include Peter Gabriel - surely deserving of the honor - Hall and Oates, Yes, The Zombies and the iconic rockers The Replacements. Those who face the ignominious title of being rejected by the Hall of Fame on more than one occasion include Kiss, LL Cool J, NWA, Deep Purple, The Meters, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic and poor old Cat Stevens.
Other close favourites include Hall & Oates, Peter Gabriel and YES
The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame will induct it's class of 2014 in April next year and earlier this week the nominees for the coveted place among rock's elite was announced to the public. For only the second time, the ballot for the inductees will be made available for public voting, and already there are some stand out favourites that look as though they have a good chance of being among the next hall of famers.
Nirvana are already the early favourites to be inducted
The early favourites, according to the public voting poll, are currently Nirvana, Kiss, Deep Purple and Yes, all of whom have over 10% of the current votes. Nirvana, who make their debut on the nominees list, currently stand as the out right favourites for induction, with the R&RHoF policy only permitting artist who have existed for a quarter of a century or longer as eligible for nomination. Their cover of Shocking Blue's 'Love Buzz' was released as their first single in 1988, which means they are finally able to be taken into consideration.
The grunge band make 2014's 16-act shortlist.
90s rock band Nirvana are one of 16 acts nominated for entry into the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Owing to the rule that only acts who released their debut album of single 25 years ago are eligible for the honour, this will be the first time that Nirvana have been considered.
Dave Grohl & Krist Novoselic May Soon Be Honoured With A Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Entry.
More than 600 industry personnel will vote to select next year's inductees, who will be announced in December. Also nominated are prog rockers Yes, disco pop band Chic, glam rock band Kiss, classic rockers Deep Purple, rap artists N.W.A and LL Cool J, and folk legend Cat Stevens, AKA Yusuf Islam.

Fans have celebrated the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's In Utero that has been marked by an LP reissue.
Nirvana fans across the globe have banded together in celebration this month to celebrate two decades of the grunge rock group's final album, In Utero, which was released on the 13rd September 1993. To commemorate the occasion, the surviving band members have released In Utero: 20th Anniversary Edition, a reissue of their highly influential 1993 release.
Dave Grohl & Krist Novoselic Remained Close After Nirvana.
The LP reissue comprises of a three-CD album, a 89-track set that includes a DVD, a 56-page book and a poster. The DVD consists of long-awaited live footage from Nirvana's 13th December 1993 Seattle "Live and Loud" show and will be available to purchase on its own.
In a recent NPR interview, Dave Grohl described the different methods used to record 'Nevermind' and 'In Utero'. Butch Vig had laboured over multiple takes for the former to produce an album that would define a generation. On the latter, Steve Albini had encouraged Cobain, Grohl and Novoselic to record songs in one take if possible, and to avoid overdubs. The result was a more abrasive set of recordings and a more accurate reflection of Nirvana's power on stage. The 20th anniversary edition of 'In Utero' attempts to restore that vision, by providing an alternative view of what turned out to be Cobain's final studio statement. While not quite as exhaustive as the anniversary edition of 'Nevermind', in many ways 'In Utero' gains more from this treatment than its predecessor did.
Recorded in two weeks at Pachyderm Studios in Minnesota during February of 1993, 'In Utero' was a reaction to the overwhelming popularity of 'Nevermind'. Producer Steve Albini set the band a simple challenge: "bang a record out in a couple of days, with high quality, but 'minimal' production and no interference from the front office bulletheads." Indeed, Albini's full letter to the band can be found in the liner notes for this re-issue; as a blueprint for the record, it makes fascinating reading. The anticipation of record company pressure and an unspoken obligation to Nirvana's burgeoning audience led to some changes from that original vision, though. Scott Litt who'd been working with R.E.M. was called in to overhaul the likes of 'Pennyroyal Tea', 'Heart Shaped Box' and 'All Apologies'. The album that eventually emerged was therefore 90% of the Albini mixes with additions like double tracked vocals thrown in for good measure. For the first time, then, this anniversary edition presents all the options that were considered, allowing the full set of Albini tracks to see the light of day.
They are admittedly more visceral and arresting, but that's not why this edition of 'In Utero' is indispensable to anyone that's ever engaged with the record. Albini, Grohl and Novoselic have re-entered the studio and remixed the album from scratch using the original tape sources. It may sound like overkill, but it really makes a difference. The 2013 version of 'In Utero' utilises unheard guitar tracks ('Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle' springs to mind), alternate vocal takes and eliminates some of the studio polish that cluttered up the original mix. 'Dumb', for example, sounds even more stripped back and heartfelt, and while there's still cello to be found, it's far less obtrusive. While it obviously doesn't have the input of Cobain, for all intents and purposes, this is the definitive mix of 'In Utero'. It's in no way superfluous and doesn't cause you to play a never-ending game of spot the difference. Instead, it presents a record that sounds substantially different, and all the better for it.

It seems Jay-Z used Nirvana lyrics without permission - good job Courtney Love agreed to it.
Jay-Z raps the lyrics of late rocker Kurt Cobain on new track 'Holy Grail,' from his forthcoming new album 'Magna Carta Holy Grail'. The hip-hop superstar was granted permission to use words from Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit by Cobain's widow Courtney Love, who is notoriously cautious of requests to sample the band's work.
Jay-Z Sings The Lyrics Of Kurt Cobain On 'Magna Carta Holy Grail'
Jay-Z sings the lines "and we all just / entertainers / and we're stupid / and contagious," as the hook on Holy Grail, a collaboration with Justin Timberlake. Though not verbatim, the words are similar to those on Smells Like Teen Spirit, when Cobain sings, "'Here we are now / entertain us / I feel stupid and contagious." Elsewhere on the track, Jay-Z references the late Nirvana frontman by name, rapping, "Momma please just get my bail / I know nobody to blame / Kurt Cobain / I did it to myself."
The track 'Holy Grail' will be released on Tuesday 25 June, just under a week before the album comes out
As we all know, Jay-Z‘s new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, will be arriving in the very near future and so far we've heard a few details about the album, but on the whole we're still waiting on something, anything, that can indicate where the album will go musically. The tracklist didn't change this, but things will change on Tuesday (June 25) when Jay releases the album's first single, 'Holy Grail,' and in the meantime Hova has been kind enough to leak some information surrounding the track.
As we've already heard from Courtney Love, one of the tracks on the album will feature lyrics from the Nirvana track 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' however what she didn't tell us was what the track might sound like or what it would be called, but with a day to spare we've now know which lyric was used and where it will be, not to mention who will be appearing on the track too. Fresh off the success of working together on 'Suit & Tie,' Justin Timberlake - who is singing the Nirvana line - will show up to sing the hook and do some crooning as well.
Timberlake sings; "and we're all just/entertainers/and we're stupid/and contagious," on the hook, following on from Jay's line; "I know nobody to blame/Kurt Cobain/I did it to myself."
Jay already intended to use the lyric without permission, but Courtney ironed out the legal details
Jay-Z announced last weekend that he is going to release his new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, as part of a special service with smartphone manufacturers Samsung. He has so far been relatively quiet in revealing examples of what we can hear on the album, but one person who hasn't been so quiet is Courtney Love, who told the Huffington Post this week that the rapper will be using some lyrics written by her late husband on the release.
Love said that the rapper is intending on using some of Kurt Cobain's lyrics from Nirvana's most famous song, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' on an unspecified track. She told the Huff. Post, "I'm letting Jay-Z use lyrics-- [daughter] Frances would freak [if she knew this]. Jay-Z's huge and we're friends. I mean we're not besties or anything.... They [used the lyrics] without asking, which is kind of nervy but the business side has been taken care of so it's fine."
Magna Carta Holy Grail will be released on July 4 via an app available exclusively on Samsung Galaxy phones. Samsung purchased one million advance copies of the album for its customers to give away with the app, a move which could have secured Jay with the number one spot on album immediately. Unfortunately for Jay however, it has since confirmed that those 'sales' will not count towards the Billboard 200 chart, as is the case in the UK and other charts across the globe.
Suicidal Paris Jackson's family had told her she wasn't allowed to attend a rock concert: a decision that could have provoked her drastic actions.
Paris Jackson's shock suicide attempt yesterday (5th June) left her in hospital last night.
She reportedly sliced her arm with a cleaver knife and took an overdose of painkillers after a relative forbade her from attending Marilyn Manson's rock concert in Los Angeles.
The 15 year-old daughter of Michael Jackson also rang a suicide hotline after she left a note to her family and was later found unconscious.
Dave Grohl reveals how Harvey nearly performed with the surviving members of Nirvana
PJ Harvey very nearly collaborated with the remaining members of Nirvana, for a special one-off performance of the band’s song ‘Milk It,’ earlier this year. In an interview with NME, Dave Grohl, now the frontman of Foo Fighters, revealed that he asked the British songwriter to perform with him and Krist Novoselic because she was of Kurt Cobain’s favourite songwriters. Kurt was the singer and guitarist of Nirvana until he took his own life in 1994.
The performance in question would have taken place on February 19, Grohl revealed. He was planning for a concert with the Sound City Players and realised that Stevie Nicks and John Fogerty weren’t going to be able to make it, so started to think about alternative additions to the evening’s performance. “Someone came up with the idea of doing a Nirvana song with PJ Harvey. Kurt loved her and we love her and we thought, 'Yeah, what would we do?' I said: 'God, what if we were to do 'Milk It' from 'In Utero' with Polly singing?' We all looked at each other like, 'Woah, that would be amazing…' and then she couldn't do it!"
It’s been 19 years since Kurt’s death and the remaining members of Nirvana have never performed any of the band’s songs in public, since. “It's sacred ground,” said Grohl. If we were ever to do something like that it would have to be right because you want to pay tribute. There's a reason Foo Fighters don't do Nirvana songs, and it's a good reason." If the PJ Harvey collaboration had come off, it would have been a momentous occasion for fans of the band.
Dave Grohl, he of Nirvana and Foo Fighters fame, has made a film. It centers around a recording studio and a particular piece of equipment from the 70s, according to the Associated Press, and despite the sound of that premise, Sound City is actually, apparently, a solid film about the human element in making music. The flick premiered at the Sundance Film Festival – that means it’s got to be good, right? - and centers around the Sound City recording studio in Van Nuys, California, where Grohl recorded the legendary Nevermind with Nirvana in 1991.
The band were sent to the nondescript studio by their record company, which wanted the musicians close by, so that they could be kept an eye on. Apparently, the band were unimpressed by the small studio in a slummy neighborhood, before noticing all the gold records lining the walls by bands and artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Van Halen, REO Speedwagon, Guns 'n Roses, Neil Young, Cheap Trick, Slayer, Rick Springfield and more. From then on, the band fell in love with the studio’s crisp, clear sound of the place.
"You might have never heard of Nirvana if we had recorded in Hollywood with a fancy producer who made us sound like Def Leppard," he said. "The fact that that (sound) board made us sound like us is what people appreciated. To be reunited with it, honestly, it was like meeting your real parents for the first time." And now, two decades later, Grohl has finally managed to pay homage to that studio. Sound City hits theatres this Friday.

Courtney Love doesn’t have much of a track record when it comes to cover versions. With her band Hole, she would often play a version of Guns N Roses’ ‘Paradise City’ that she would abandon half way through. Same goes for Depeche Mode’s ‘Hungry Like A Wolf,’ though the band did release a brilliant cover of Velvet Underground’s ‘Pale Blue Eyes,’ it has to be said.
When we heard that Courtney Love covered Jay Z’s ’99 Problems,’ though, we feared for the worst. And, sadly, our fears were confirmed. “This either sucks or it’s genius, I don’t know,” she said as she introduced the song at her impromptu Sundance Film Festival set.
Albums of Note... Rihanna’s seventh studio album, Unapologetic has been met with a mixed response and our reviewer reckons the Barbadian pop star phoned this one in. As her career becomes more of a marketing cash cow than an artistic endeavour, so her albums impress less and less.
Of course, there is also the ‘elephant’ that seems to appear in every room Rihanna walks into… an elephant known as ‘Chris Brown.’ He makes an appearance on the album, duetting with RhiRhi on a track called ‘Nobody’s Business.’ “Fun: it's something that's lacking a lot in this album, Unapologetic rattling on machine-like but with very little given away to the spirit of enjoyment… She doesn't have to feel apologetic for anything, but what's more concerning is that Rihanna doesn't seem to feel anything anymore, something all too apparent on this turgid LP.”
The 12-12-12 Concert, which took place on, yes, the 12th this month, was a rousing success, with over 20 million viewers tuning in nation-wide and $30 million raised, according to Nielsen estimates.
The lineup was an eclectic mix of big names in the business like Bruce Springsteen, Nirvana along with Sir Paul McCartney (that was definitely a curious collaboration), Alicia Keys and Eric Clapton, among others. It featured a number of New York natives, who urged the nation to open their pockets and donate to the relief effort. The show also featured a number of guest appearances by celebrities, representing their native areas, like Kristen Stewart, Adam Sandler, Jimmy Fallon and Blake Lively among others.
The event wasn’t without its controversy either, as a comment made by Mick Jagger sparked a mini storm (no pun intended) among Twitter users. The line, which went “When it rains in London, you’ve got to come in and help us.” quickly made the rounds and managed to enrage some of the more sensitive viewers, but it seemed to be more of a foot-in-mouth moment, rather than carry any malicious intent on Jagger’s part. Regardless of that little moment though, the event seems to have been a success all round, with Americans all over the country pitching in to rebuild one of the nation’s most prominent cities.
Courtney Love, Kurt Kobain's widow and mother of his only child, has expressed her distaste at the appointment of Paul McCartney to be the front man of a Nirvana reunion at the 12-12-12 charity gig in New York, on Wednesday.
The show was all for charity, to support the victims of Hurricane Sandy, for Courtney Love, it's just not cool that McCartney has taken Kurt's place, reports TMZ. "Look, if John were alive it would be cool." She said. She also objects to the reference to the gig as a 'Nirvana reunion' because she says, without Kurt, it's not Nirvana. We can certainly see where she's coming from, but for a band as well loved as Nirvana, a 'reunion' regardless of its authenticity never stops being a tribute to Kurt and will always provide an arena for fans to remember him and the band.
McCartney, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have been 'jamming' together for a while in secret and have even written some songs together. Speaking to the audience at the 12-12-12 concert McCartney said: "Recently, some guys asked me to go jam with them... So I showed up, like you do, ready to jam. And in the middle of it, these guys kept going, 'We haven't played together for years.' So the penny finally dropped, I finally understood I was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion." Reports the LA Times.
Katie Holmes and Blake Lively were in danger of stealing the limelight from the host of rockers performing at last night’s Concert For Sandy Relief at New York’s Madison Square Garden (December 12, 2012). Even Kanye West turning up in a skirt couldn’t upstage these two glamour-pusses, who were all a-shimmer for the big event.
Holmes may be a recent divorcee at 33 and Lively a newlywed at 25, but the pair of them looked equally happy last night. Katie chose to wear a figure-hugging purple dress with velvet panels, designed by Tom Ford, suiting her own classic style down to the ground (well, down to the knees anyway). US Magazine have pictured Tom Cruise’s ex looking relaxed at the charity concert, which featured The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney & Nirvana and Bruce Springsteen, among others and she wore her hair loose, neatly accessorised with black pointy heels. Blake went for a studded red leather mini-dress, designed by Isabel Marant and nude caged ankle boots, designed by Christian Louboutin.
Blake, who recently married Ryan Reynolds, has been keeping a low profile of late, though she and her new husband had been spotted enjoying a break in Paris at the start of this month. Both Katie and Blake were looking stunning last night; they almost put some of the musicians to shame when it came to grabbing the limelight.
Yesterday’s Concert For Sandy Relief (December 12, 2012) turned into a year’s worth of rock and pop headlines, all rolled into one. Not only were some of the coolest kids on the block performing (Alicia Keys, we’re looking at you), but they were doing it in tabloid-seeking style (Kanye West in a skirt, anyone?). However, it was the older statesmen of rock and roll that really grabbed the nations’ attention last night.
First up, Sir Paul McCartney, formerly of The Beatles and now, apparently… of Nirvana? Well, maybe not quite. But Sir Paul did perform with the surviving members of Nirvana – Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, playing a new song that they had composed together, entitled ‘Cut Me Some Slack.’ It was part of a wider set performed by McCartney and allayed the fears of devout Nirvana fans, concerned that they would be performing a set of Nirvana covers, with McCartney taking the place of the late Kurt Cobain.
The Rolling Stones made an impressive, if brief, performance, playing ‘You Got Me Rocking’ and ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ before leaving the Madison Square Garden gathered crowd wanting more. Mick Jagger’s seemingly unending reserves of energy put many of the other performers to shame, even if he didn’t have to exert quite the same degree of stamina that he has had to at the band’s recent 2 hour 50th anniversary shows. “Homestate hero” Bruce Springsteen was described by New York Times as “the master of the socially conscious message that’s also a full-tilt rock concert” and last night, he didn’t disappoint. The evening ended on a rousing note, with Alicia Keys joined by a stage full of firefighters to sing ‘Empire State Of Mind Part II,’ with its appropriate chorus of “This is New York… concrete jungle where dreams are made of.”
At Saturday's concert Dave Grohl said that he wanted to make the most of their performance as he was unsure when they would be performing together again. In his letter on Facebook he said “Yes... I was serious. I'm not sure when the Foo Fighters are going to play again”. But, do not despair! He followed this up by saying “I never want to NOT be in this band. So, sometimes it's good to just... put it back in the garage for a while...” He also referred to the band as his 'family', his 'life' and his 'world'.
Grohl also encouraged fans that they would all see more of his work very soon, as the hiatus allows him to work on his latest project, a documentary called 'Sound City' which he referred to as the “most important project [he's] ever worked on.”

Danny Goldberg, former manager of Nirvana, has said Courtney Love was a toxic presence among the band.
Love married Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain in 1992, with the couple having a daughter, Frances Bean, before Cobain's suicide in 1994.
And according to Goldberg, Love had an instrumental role in Cobain's struggles with heroin and acted as the frontman's "mouthpiece".
"Courtney's very presence was a metaphor for the end of one era in the band's life and the beginning of another," he writes in his upcoming book Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside the Rock And Roll Business.
Goldberg discusses an incident in which he delivered money to the couple, believing they were about to spend it on heroin.
"The weekend in January 1992 that Nirvana did Saturday Night Live for the first time was a turning point that put into focus the heroin problem that was to haunt Kurt for the rest of his life.
"Courtney called me at home the morning the show aired," Goldberg continues in an excerpt, reproduced at Spinner.com, "and asked me to get Kurt $5,000 (£2,800) in cash so they could do some 'shopping'.
"I felt pretty uncomfortable as I delivered the package of $100 (£56) bills to her [Love] at the hotel," he explains.
"Abruptly, the dark cloud of drug excess had entered the band's life. I was confronted by the baroque facade of lies and the awful glassy-eyed deadness that regular heroin use provides."
Bumping Into Geniuses: My Life Inside the Rock and Roll Business is released in the US on Thursday September 18th.
