'Wonderwall' Voted Best British Song Ever By Radio X Listeners, As Oasis Dominate Poll

In a revelation that will surprise precisely nobody, Oasis have thoroughly dominated a poll conducted by Radio X to discover the best British song of all time, securing not only the number one spot with ‘Wonderwall’ but also the rest of the top four.

There’s been plenty of scorn directed at the online poll, which has been run by the overwhelmingly white male-oriented station over the last week, as the now-defunct Manchester group had their songs ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, ‘Champagne Supernova’ and ‘Live Forever’ named as the rest of the top four respectively.

More than 50,000 votes were cast in the 6 month old station’s inaugural ‘Best of British’ poll, organised via RadioToday, and every single song in the list of twenty was secured by – wait for it – white males with guitars.

Looking down the list, The Stone Roses make two appearances, as do The Beatles and David Bowie, as well as a fifth appearance for Oasis with ‘Slide Away’ in 16th.

Noel Gallagher, Oasis’ chief songwriter, reacted to the poll: “What can I say? The people have spoken. The fact that there wasn’t one single NGHFB song in the top 20 makes me think the whole thing is a mockery of an unreliable sham! Saying that though, I’m thrilled. Thanks for voting. ONWARDS.”

Chris Baughen, managing editor of Radio X, said in a statement: “Just six months on from the launch of Radio X, we asked our listeners to vote for their favourite records in the first ever Best of British poll, and they have spoken in their thousands. In fact we received more than 50,000 votes in just over two weeks showing how much our listeners love British music.”
