Olivia Colman Goes From Bit Player To Fully Fledge Star After BAFTA Wins

Olivia Colman

Olivia Colman can kiss her days as a guest/bit actress goodbye as the Broadchurch actress walked away from last nights (May 12) BAFTA Television Awards with two gongs to her name. The actress best known for playing lovely Sophie on Peep Show can probably expect starring roles and a greater freedom with her roles than ever before, and frankly it couldn't have come to anyone more deserving.

The actress won the awards for best supporting actress, for her role in ITV's The Accused, and best female in a comedy programme for Twenty Twelve, with the BBC's Olympic send-up also taking home the award for best sitcom. Upon receiving her first award for her role in The Accused, the actress told the audience, "Turns out it does mean a lot. And I'm not going to cry," adding that she owes her win to her co-star Anne Marie Duff, "If it's alright with everyone, it's for Anne Marie and me to share - we're Anne Malivia Colemuff, we did it together and I couldn't have done it without her to play off."

Millie Mackintosh Has Dress Nightmare On BAFTA's Red Carpet [Pictures]

BAFTA Millie Mackintosh Sean Bean Olivia Colman Alan Carr

Made in Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh had a nightmare from start to finish during her BAFTA's red-carpet arrival on Sunday evening (May 12, 2013). The 23-year-old reality star wore a pretty stunning looking Sass & Bide black dress, though the waist-high slits proved problematic as the wind and rain battered the Royal Festival Hall in London.

"I'm wearing Sass & Bide, first time I've worn a Sass & Bide dress. I'm a little bit worried about walking in it because it's slit up to here. But I love the dress, and it's quite a different look from what I did last year," she told The Sun on the red-carpet. Millie, who is engaged to rapper Professor Green, was attending the show to support her E4 show which was nominated for Best Reality and Constructed Factual Programme. And guess what. It won!

The result was a little controversial, though Alan Carr beat Ant and Dec to best entertainment performance for Chatty Man, so anything's possible at the BAFTAs. Elsewhere, James Bond actor Ben Whishaw won leading actor for his performance in Richard II (The Hollow Crown), beating out Sean Bean and theatre legend Derek Jacobi, while Sheridan Smith won lead actress for Mrs Biggs ahead of Sienna Miller and Rebecca Hall. However, the night belonged to revered actress Olivia Colman, who won the BAFTA for both supporting actress (Accused) and female performance in a comedy programme (Twenty Twelve).

'Broadchurch' And 'The Killing': Is Olivia Colman The New Sarah Lund?

Olivia Colman

Olivia Colman has top billing in new ITV whodunit drama Broadchurch, likened by many to Denmark's tour-de-force crime-drama 'The Killing.' Like the Scandinavian series, Broadchurch focuses on the investigation of a murder in a close-knit community - in this case, a Dorset seaside town. David Tennant is along for the ride, while Vicky McClure, Doctor Who's Arthur Darvill and Andrew Buchan also make up the cast. The show has been talked up since being announced last year, though should we believe the hype?

"The Killing was so brilliant that it seems a bit up yourself to say this is 'the British Killing'," an unequivocal Colman told The Independent. The Peep Show actress - often considered one of the most versatile yet underrated actresses in Britain - plays a local police detective teamed with an abrasive outsider (David Tennant) to lead the murder investigation. Sounds familiar, though it's hardly surprising ITV and the BBC are mirroring the tried and tested formulas done so well in Denmark and Sweden.

Colman's performance as a charity shop worker enduring domestic abuse in Paddy Considine's directorial debut Tyrannosaur was, arguably, one of the finest performances by a British actress for many, many years. The movie, also featuring an incredible turn from Peter Mullan, won several awards including the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. "It changed everything, really," Colman said the picture. "It's funny. I've always done bits of drama, but clearly nothing anyone had ever seen."

Hyde Park On Hudson Review

Good

The breezy, entertaining tone of this historical comedy-drama kind of undermines the fact that it centres on one of the most pivotal moments in US-British history. Director Michell (Notting Hill) knows how to keep an audience engaged, and yet he indulges in both tawdry innuendo and silly cliches, never giving the real-life events a proper sense of perspective. Even so, some terrific performances make it enjoyable.

The events in question take place in 1939, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Murray) invites Britain's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (West and Colman) to visit Hyde Park, the upstate New York residence he shares with his mother (Wilson), while his wife Eleanor (Williams) lives down the road with her "she-male" friends. Roosevelt knows that George is here to ask for help against the growing threat of Hitler's Germany, and as a result of their talks a "special relationship" develops between America and Britain. Meanwhile, the womanising Roosevelt is not-so-quietly having an affair with his distant cousin and confidant Daisy (Linney).

Essentially there are two films here fighting for our attention. Much of the story is seen through Daisy's eyes, complete with an annoyingly mousy voiceover that never tells us anything we can't see on screen. Linney underplays the character to the point where we barely notice that she's in the room, and the depiction of Daisy's romance with FDR is often squirm-inducing. By contrast, the other aspect of the plot is fascinating, with West and especially Colman shining in their roles as witty, nervous Brits trying to make the most of the first ever visit of a British monarch to America. Their steely resolve is brilliantly undermined by their brittle nerves and endless curiosity.

Twenty Twelve Snubbed At The British Comedy Awards, But Jack Whitehall Wins The Crown

Jack Whitehall Vic Reeves Bob Mortimer Alan Carr Olivia Colman Jessica Hynes Rebecca Front Sarah Millican David Mitchell Graham Norton Jonathan Ross Lee Mack

The British Comedy Awards were held last night, presented once again by Jonathan Ross. It saw a room of the country's funniest people come under one roof to celebrate and ridicule one another, as is the British tradition.

Twenty Twelve and The Thick of It have been compared since the former hit screens in 2011. It satirises the shambolic organization of this year's the Olympic games, while The Thick of It satirises the inner workings of the British government. However, despite audiences loving Twenty Twelve and it receiving four nominations in the three categories that it's eligible for, it failed to take home anything. Both Olivia Colman and Jessica Hynes from the show were nominated for Best Actress, but they lost out to The Thick of It's Rebecca Front. It seems an odd snub given that everyone has been celebrating all things Olympic since it was revealed that London got the deal.

Another surprise was Jack Whitehall's voted win of King of Comedy for 2012. He was up against some serious comedy heavy weights that have done the circuit for years: Alan Carr, Lee Mack, David Mitchell, Graham Norton and last year's Queen of Comedy, Sarah Millican. Initial speculation had assumed David Mitchell would get the prize, for his many panel show appearances, Peep Show and That Mitchell and Webb Look. However, Whitehall has really broken through this year, with popular shows Bad Education and Fresh Meat, which are a lot better than they sound.

Who Will Become Comedy Royalty At The British Comedy Awards: Sarah Millican, Jack Whitehall Or David Mitchell?

Jack Whitehall Sarah Millican David Mitchell Olivia Colman Harry Hill

The British Comedy Awards are set to be aired on Channel 4 on December 12th, hosted- as always- by Jonathan Ross. This year's nominations have a few surprises, but despite three contenders up for the King or Queen of comedy for 2012, everyone's talking about the amount of nominations for Twenty Twelve- four in total, where The Thick of It has only three- although in all three of those categories, they'll be compeating against one another.

The real star of the occasion though is Olivia Colman who has two nominations in the same category but for two different shows: Twenty Twelve and Rev. However, despite breaking records with those nominations, she's not up for the vote for Comedy Royalty. Instead, those go to Jack Whitehall, Alan Carr, Lee Mack, Graham Norton, David Mitchell and Sarah Millican, who'll be defending her title from 2011. The result is down to a public vote, but the strongest contenders are Jack Whitehall, David Mitchell and of course last year's winner. Jack Whitehall is the sproutling of the bunch, but 2012 really has been his year with BBC's Bad Education and Channel 4's Fresh Meat to his credit.

Harry Hill's TV burp has also received three nominations for the final season of TV Burp. Hill said: "I am thrilled that my personality has been deemed entertaining enough to be nominated for a British Comedy award, particularly in this, the last year of TV Burp, and when I next see it I will be certain to let it know. It would be the icing on the cake if it won - but no pressure", the Guardian Reports.

Farce, Or Fair Enough? Olivia Colman To Battle Herself At British Comedy Awards

Olivia Colman Hugh Bonneville Rebecca Front Paddy Considine Steve Coogan Alan Carr David Mitchell Graham Norton Jack Whitehall Lee Mack Sarah Millican

Olivia Colman has been nominated twice in the same category for the upcoming British Comedy Awards. The 39-year-old, perhaps best known for playing Sophie on Peep Show, is up for Best Actress for two BBC shows, Rev and Twenty Twelve.

The decision has left some comedy fans bemused, though the general consensus is that Colman has put in two excellent performances and therefore has every right to be nominated twice. She played Hugh Bonneville's character's long-suffering assistant Sally Owen in the London Olympics comedy and plays Tom Hollander's wife Alex Smallbone on religious comedy Rev. Though having two chances to win the award, Colman still faces stiff competition to land the gong, with Twenty Twelve co-star Jessica Hynes also nominated. The Thick Of It's Rebecca Front, who plays the MP Nicola Murray, is also up for Best Actress. Colman - now considered one of the UK's top actresses - has already had a superb year, winning a slew of awards for playing an abused charity shop worker in Paddy Considine's gritty drama Tyrannosaur

Elsewhere at the comedy awards, The Thick Of It is one of five shows to receive three nominations, along with The Graham Norton Show, Rev, Cardinal Burns and Harry Hill's TV Burp. Steve Coogan picked up a couple of nominations for Alan Partridge: Welcome To Places In My Life. This year's King or Queen of Comedy will be contested by Alan Carr, David Mitchell, Graham Norton, Jack Whitehall, Lee Mack and Sarah Millican. The award winners will be announced live on Channel 4 on Wednesday 12 December.

The Iron Lady Review

Very Good
A fairly straightforward character portrait without any real analysis or message, this biopic succeeds because of the translucent performance by Meryl Streep. While the script and direction are inventive, they're also oddly uncritical.

In present-day London, Baroness Thatcher (Streep) is battling delusions of her dead husband Denis (Broadbent), who triggers memories of her life in politics.

Growing up during the war, young Margaret (Roach) becomes increasingly involved in politics, catches the eye of young Denis (Lloyd) and moves up the ladder from MP to become Britain's first female Prime Minister. She was also the longest-serving PM in the 20th century, staunchly sticking to her guns through the Poll Tax strikes, Falklands War and privatisation of much of the British state.

Arrietty Review

Excellent
Based on Mary Norton's classic novel The Borrowers, this film features striking animation and a story that's rich, detailed and full of vividly engaging characters. And it refreshingly refuses to play by Hollywood rules about narrative.

When the sickly young Sho (voiced by Kamiki) goes to live with his aunt (Takeshita) in the country, he spots a tiny girl in the garden, just like his mother remembered seeing when she was young. But housekeeper Haru (Kiki) denies they exist. Indeed, the girl was Arrietty (Shida), who lives with her parents (Miura and Ohtake) in a small home under the floor full of things that are borrowed unnoticed from the house above. But being seen has consequences, and even though Sho is clearly friendly, Arrietty's world is about to change.

Le Donk & Scor-Zay-Zee Review

Excellent
This hilarious mock-doc has the same tone as Spinal Tap, with a free-flowing stream of throwaway gags. It also captures a terrific comical performance from Considine that finds actual depth beneath the silliness.

Shane Meadows is making a documentary about his friend Nicholas (Considine), who has renamed himself Le Donk as he tries to get his life back in control.

His main goal is to help his friend, the young rapper Scor-zay-see (Palinczuk), become a star, and he thinks he's found the venue in a massive stadium concert in Manchester opening for the Arctic Monkeys. Meanwhile, his ex-girlfriend (Coleman) is expecting their child, but her new boyfriend (Graham) seems to be taking over as the prospective dad.
