Office Christmas Party Review

Good

Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman reunite with The Switch directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck for a holiday comedy based on a story by the guys who wrote The Hangover movies. Yes, this is pretty much what you expect it will be: a clumsily written lark that strains for gross-out gags. But it also manages to keep the audience laughing, simply because the cast is up for it.

It's set in the Chicago branch of a technology firm, where the playful director Clay (T.J. Miller) has created a lively atmosphere but is losing money. So his CEO sister Carol (Aniston) drops in to tell him she's planning to shut down the branch. Clay and manager Josh (Bateman) have one last hope: to land a big client (Courtney B. Vance), so they invite him to their epic Christmas party, which is also designed to assure the staff that everything is fine. Helping with the plan are the IT expert Tracey (Olivia Munn) and the HR director Mary (Kate McKinnon). And no one is surprised when the festivities begin to spin crazily out of control.

Frankly, the party itself is the weakest thing about the movie, as it's blown up far beyond credibility, and never given much attention in the narrative. Instead, the through-line is the wacky caper involving the central characters, played by a gang of actors who are experts at improvisation, so they continually throw amusing bits of unexpected comedy at the audience. The winner is McKinnon, who is consistently hysterical, stealing every scene as she did in Ghostbusters. But Munn's acerbic wit and Miller's endearing nuttiness give her a run for her money. As does Rob Corddry as a chucklehead colleague. By comparison, Aniston and Bateman anchor the film as the vaguely more grounded figures. Although Carol is a pretty nasty piece of work, we have no doubt that everyone will wear her down in the end.

Office Christmas Party Trailer

For many large companies, the office Christmas party are nights that can rapidly descend into mayhem. Free flowing liquor, music, Santa hats and the thought of the Winter Holiday period off work are enough motivation to drive even the most straight of employees to unwind.

Clay Vanstone is part of the family business, out of all their branches, his in the one that's failing and Clay is hardly a usually businessman. His sister, Carol is firm on the idea of closing down his branch but Clay is steadfast in saving the business.

As the holidays approach, Clay comes up with the great idea of combining the office party with a boozy meeting with some new clients, who, if they win their business would be enough to save their fun-loving branch.

X-Men Apocalypse Trailer

X-Men Apocalypse comes as the ninth instalment in the X-Men film series and stars Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy as Raven and Professor X. The X-Men are made up of a subspecies of humans that are born with superhuman abilities and are able to perform acts that are considered not normal for the average human.

X-Men: Apocalypse Review

Very Good

This closing chapter of the First Class trilogy falls into the same trap as The Last Stand, the final part in the original X-Men trilogy: it shifts the focus from character detail and social commentary into a more standard effects-heavy action brawl. There's still a lot of strong character detail, and a big story that can't help but be entertaining. But it's impossible to escape the feeling that the film's scale is far bigger than it needed to be.

It's now 1983, and while Professor X (James McAvoy) works with Hank (Nicholas Hoult) to set up his school for young mutants, his old friend and nemesis Erik (Michael Fassbender) has started a family in a rural corner of Poland. But he can't hide forever. Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) is roaming the world helping mutants where she can, meeting the teleporting Kurt (Kodi Smit-McPhee) in Berlin before heading to Cairo. There, CIA operative Moira (Rose Byrne) has just uncovered a bizarre underground cult that has revived the ancient super-mutant Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), who immediately sets out on a quest to cleanse the planet and start over again. He needs four assistants, and the question is which of the X-Men will go over to the dark side.

This is the third comic book movie in a row about superheroes fighting each other, after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War. And it's similarly enormous (all three films are around two-and-a-half hours long), with mammoth battles that don't quite make logical sense but are compelling enough that the audience goes with them. This film has a bit more emotional depth, including back-stories that have been developed with unusual complexity. But some characters fall through the cracks.

X-Men Apocalypse - Teaser Trailer

Mutants and humans alike are familiar with the story of Apocalypse, he was the first mutant and began harnessing his power in ancient times. Now, millions of years after his reign, Apocalypse is reborn and finds himself in the middle of a modern society and shocked by the direction both human and mutant life has taken.

Feeling there are few options left, Apocalypse calls on the help of Magneto and a group of other mutants to help 'cleanse' the earth of all the citizens who have contributed to its downfall. The Horsemen of the Apocalypse - headed by Magneto - start to wreak havoc around the world and it looks like the X-Men's attempts to save it are all but lost - especially when their team is badly hurt by the loss of one member.

Brian Singer directs X-Men Apocalypse which reunites the lead cast from X-Men: Days of Future Past and sees the addition of Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse.

'Mortdecai' Trailer: What Has Happened To Johnny Depp?

Johnny Depp Gwyneth Paltrow Olivia Munn

We're starting to think that, actually, it's way off the mark to assume that Johnny Depp is not picking the right roles. Whereas his contemporaries Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr seem more than capable of mixing straight up blockbusters with genuine quality cinema, Depp hasn't really made a good movie since Public Enemies - which certainly had its detractors.

Johnny DeppJohnny Depp as Mortdecai

Of course, the 51-year-old has been moving into 'character actor' territory for years now and appears to thrive in the off-beat portrayal. He's played the Mad Hatter, Hunter S Thompson, Tonto, Jack Sparrow, Barnabas Collins and now, Kyril's Bonfiglioli's moustachioed art dealer Charlie Mortdecai. Eric Aronson's Mortdecai sees Depp trekking across the globe on the hunt for a stolen painting thought to hold the key to some mystery treasure.

Newly Single Taylor Swift Shines At People's Choice Awards

Taylor Swift Jennifer Lawrence Nicki Minaj Katy Perry Christina Aguilera Alicia Keys Olivia Munn Harry Styles

The 2013 People’s Choice Awards Ceremony took place in Los Angeles earlier this week, and the numerous categories of awards held few surprises this year.

As expected, one of the big winners of the night was The Hunger Games franchise, winning across the board, in categories like Action Movie, Movie Franchise and winning lead actress Jennifer Lawrence the statuette in the category Face of Heroism - an odd category for any award show to have, but we never object to Lawrence getting more screen time. Other big winners of the night included Nicki Minaj (for Hip Hop Artist), Katy Perry (for Female Artist and Pop Artist). The other stars of the show, even if they weren’t awarded anything, were definitely the performers – Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys, to name a few – and last, but certainly not least, Taylor Swift’s cleavage.

The 23-year-old singer has been gracing headlines non-stop for a few months now, from her new album and new image to her relationship (and subsequent breakup) with One Direction singer Harry Styles. Taylor’s certainly had her ups and downs, but the People’s Choice awards definitely count as a success for her, as she not only managed to win the Country Artist award, but looked fabulous and displayed a pleasant sense of humor while doing it. She and host Olivia Munn referenced Swift’s 2009 MTV VMA debacle, during which Kanye West interrupted Swift mid award acceptance. That awkward moment is long forgotten now, however, and even with her complicated love life, Swift looks set for a lasting musical career.

People's Choice Awards: Was Olivia Munn's 'Kanye-ing' A Joke With Taylor Swift?

Olivia Munn Taylor Swift

The People's Choice Awards is a far cry from the Golden Globes or the Oscars. They are entirely different beasts, but of the same species. If they were baked goods, the People's Choice awards is a cupcake made and decorated by your children, delicious and heart warming. In contrast, the Globes and Oscars are pistachio macaroons, exquisitely made and sometimes with a surprise filling. They're both great, they're both delicious, but the People's Choice just has a little more heart.

This heart comes from the fact that it really is the People's choice. The paying and viewing public audience are the ones who vote for every single winner, so, as Emma Watson said when receiving the award for Best Dramatic Movie, for Perks of Being a Wallflower, it just means more knowing that it's thousands of people voting for you.

The awards also added a new one in the mix this year: 'Favourite Humanitarian'. The first winner of it was Sandra Bullock, mostly for her work in New Orleans. As E! said her speech was a little bit heart wrenching.

Freeloaders Trailer

A bunch of freeloaders are living rent-free in a rockstar's luxurious mansion, however, when they are informed that the owner Adam Duritz (incidentally, the lead singer of Counting Crows), who is often away from home due to work and is therefore unheard of by some of his home's occupants, has decided to sell his lavish property in favour of moving to New York. In order to carry on living their swish, unearned lifestyles, the gang have to come up with $400,000 down payment which they attempt through selling some of Adam's stuff on eBay and allowing a porn movie to be shot on the property. Realizing that there's no way they can make enough money to keep the house, they embark on a sabotage mission, doing everything they possibly can to make sure the house is not sold.

'Freeloaders' is a brilliant new comedy from the producer of 'Super Troopers' and 'Beerfest' (Richard Perello), directed by Dan Rosen ('Dead Man's Curve') and co-written by Dave Gibbs in his screenwriting debut. With a variety of guest appearances including from Adam Duritz of Counting Crows who was also a co-producer, this upcoming flick is scheduled to hit movie theaters in January 2013.

Starring: Olivia Munn, Jane Seymour, Nat Faxon, Clifton Collins Jr., Kevin Sussman, Dave Foley, Jay Chandrasekhar, Zoe Boyle, Garrett Morris, Dana Goodman, Natalie Morales & Kevin Heffernan, Brit Morgan.

The Babymakers Review

Weak

What starts out as a smart, sassy comedy about infertility gets bogged down in its own potty humour, ultimately becoming a dull caper romp that's impossible to care about. This is a real shame since the cast is clearly up for something more sophisticated and knowing, and the filmmakers seem to have some amusing ideas up their sleeves.

The film opens as Audrey and Tommy (Munn and Schneider) are celebrating their third anniversary and decide to start a family. When Audrey doesn't get pregnant, tests show that Tommy's low sperm count is to blame, due presumably to too many groin injuries while goofing around with his chucklehead pals (Heffernan and Faxon). But since he had donated to a sperm bank years earlier, he decides to make a withdrawal, only to discover that the last batch has already been sold. So he and his friends hire a crazy-eyed Indian criminal (Chandrasekhar) to orchestrate a heist.

Munn and Schneider are gifted actors who create an engaging sense of chemistry in the feisty first act, grounding the comedy in real marital issues that are riotously funny because of the unexpected frankness of their discussions about sex. But as this starts to drift into a series of one-note gags about semen and genitals, our patience wavers. And then the caper kicks in, and it's so contrived and stupid that we lose all interest in the film and the characters. We may still care about Audrey and Tommy, but the situation they get into is just as idiotic as the people around them.

Video - Olivia Munn, Michael Douglas And Catherine Zeta-Jones Arrive For The Michael Kors Collection At Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

'The Newsroom' actress Olivia Munn arrives outside the venue for the Michael Kors Spring/ Summer 2013 show at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week in a stunning tight-fitting turquoise dress. She poses for photos with fans and seemingly recognises one of her fans who is waiting for her with the photographers and has a brief chat with her before moving on. Hollywood couple Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, former Miss World 2007 Zhang Zilin, actress Nina Arianda and former 'American Idol' contestant Katharine McPhee are also among the event's arrivals.

The Babymakers Trailer

There comes a time in a relationship when baby talk must be had. When Audrey brings the subject up with husband Tommy, he doesn't think sowing the seeds of nature would be a problem - especially since he sold a sample of his sperm to the local sperm bank some years ago. However, after being unsuccessful at getting his wife pregnant several times, they go to a doctor who informs him of his extremely low sperm count. Feeling slightly emasculated, he suggests that there could be a problem, perhaps, with Audrey's body, but the doctor dismisses the idea as her ovaries are in perfect shape. Remembering when he sold his sperm sample, he revisits the sperm bank and requests it back in a last bid to have a baby. When the man at the clinic tells him it has already been sold, Tommy offers twice the amount of money they did in order to win it back. He is refused but his friends persuade him that he has the right to steal it back and so they set out on a scheme to retrieve his last chance at fatherhood.

Magic Mike Review

Very Good
A film about male strippers promises Showgirls (or at least Burlesque) levels of camp guilty-pleasure fun for female and gay-male audiences. But look again, because the trailers are misleading. This is a Steven Soderbergh film, and he's a serious director who enjoys twisting genres in intelligent ways. Even his comedies (the Ocean's Eleven series) are smart and surprising. Furthermore, the story is based on star Channing Tatum's own experiences as a stripper while he sought work as an actor, so the plot doesn't fall into the usual formula.

Tatum plays Mike, a construction worker who moonlights as a stripper in a women-only club in Tampa, Florida. When he notices hot, 19-year-old Adam (Pettyfer) on the building site, he invites him along to the club, where owner Dallas (McConaughey) is hoping to take the show to the Miami big time. Soon Adam is part of the team (which includes actor-hunks True Blood's Manganiello, White Collar's Bomer and CSI Miami's Rodriguez), but he also gets tempted by the darker side of the scene, namely girls and drugs.

I Don't Know How She Does It Review

OK
There are plenty of skilled people behind this female-empowerment movie, but the film badly botches its core message. The script may reflect a certain reality about the sexes, but it also misses the point.

In Boston, Kate (Parker) has a loving husband, Richard (Kinnear), and two adorable children. Everyone watches her in wonder as she juggles her responsibilities as a wife, mother and high-powered investment banker. But the constant business trips are taking their toll, especially when she's required to work regularly in New York with investor Jack (Brosnan). It's a struggle, but Kate keeps everything running. The question is whether anyone is actually happy with the situation.
