Paul Feig On Writing And Directing Movie Parts For Women

Paul Feig Melissa McCarthy Jude Law

Paul Feig, the director of the new movie Spy starring Melissa McCarthy, has spoken about his desire to write realistic roles for women, rather than conform to the usual rom-com rubric where all that female characters talk about are their relationships with men.

The 52 year old director, who has previously helmed movies such as Bridesmaids and Knocked Up, told The Huffington Post on Monday: “I want to write to the things I want them to be discussing and not be discussing. I have no desire to do, at this point in time, a romantic comedy where it's all about… talking about a guy or this and that. I love to be able to pass the Bechdel test.”

Will Melissa McCarthy Be Taking The Lead In Paul Feig's 'Ghostbuster's' Reboot?

Melissa McCarthy Paul Feig

Ever since it was revealed that the Ghostbusters reboot would featured an all female cast, Melissa McCarthy has been the name which has come up most when discussing who could be the film’s main star. The Bridesmaids funny woman seems to be the perfect choice for the film, plus her frequent collaborator Paul Feig will be in the directors chair. So what’s stopping McCarthy from signing on?

Melissa McCarthyCould Melissa McCarthy's next role be as a Ghostbuster?

Well it seems the actress’ popularity could be the problem as her busy schedule may prevent her from taking on a role in the reboot. The Hollywood Reporter writes that their sources say McCarthy is in early talks to star in the film, however there are ‘several hurdles that need to be overcome’, before the actress can join Feig for the fourth time.

'Ghostbusters 3' Is Underway, But Is Melissa McCarthy The Star?

Melissa McCarthy Paul Feig

Well, this is a nice Thursday surprise. We've been hearing about Ghostbusters 3 for years. Till now, it's always seemed like a bit of desperate nostalgia project from Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray made it clear he wants nothing to do with the thing. And so news that Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is directing and writing a primarily female-led movie with Parks and Recreation scribe Katie Dippold is fascinating.

Sandra Bullock Turns Up The Temperature At The New York Premiere Of 'The Heat' [Pictures]

Sandra Bullock Melissa McCarthy Paul Feig

Sandra Bullock is trying her hand at comedy in the film The Heat, in which she stars alongside Melissa McCarthy in the buddy cop movie. This Sunday (June 23), the actress lit-up the red carpet at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City and despite being closer to fifty than forty, the actress oozed sex appeal and made the red carpet her own before the movie was screened.

Wearing a black leather Ermanno Scervino dress with gold sequins patterned across it, complete with gladiator-style heels and a solitary gold bangle, the actress exuded all the beauty and presence of a Mediterranean Goddess - not to take anything away from the other stars on the red carpet of course. The actress is no stranger to showing off a bit of skin on the red carpet, and on Sunday she showed off exactly the right amount again, not revealing too much but still looking tantalising in her LBD. Her co-star McCarthy meanwhile wore a curve-hugging navy dress with a gold bangle, finished off with some strappy stilettos.

Whilst there the actress discussed her role in the film - in which she plays a hard-as-nails FBI agent who teams up with a small-town cop (McCarthy) for a big sting - as well as discussing how her part is usually reserved for male actor, but hopefully in the future will see more and more women taking to comedy roles. She also discussed how she and co-star McCarthy became particularly close during filming, with the two hitting it off with each other straight away.
