Veteran Hollywood actor and self-confessed motor racing fan Paul Newman has failed in his attempt to establish a race track in Brooklyn, New York. The legendary Oscar-winner wanted to create a 'Festival of Speed' at a disused aerodrome to raise money for a home for children with terminal illnesses. However, local birdwatchers have vetoed the plan because the noise could frighten away rare grassland birds. E J MCADAMS of environmental organisation the New York Audubon Society says, "This is such a very special habitat. There are many birds that might be driven away including the upland sandpiper and the short-eared owl."
