The singer, best known for his iconic 1966 hit When a Man Loves a Woman, died at his home in Louisiana on Tuesday morning (14Apr15). No cause of death was known as WENN went to press.

The singer enjoyed success in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a number of emotional love songs, but When a Man Loves a Woman was his biggest hit, topping charts globally. The song was revived in 1991 by Michael Bolton, who brought it back to the charts and scored a Grammy Award for his version.

Sledge later scored his own Grammy Award nod for his 1994 album Blue Night, which featured contributions from stars including Bobby Womack and Mick Taylor, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
