Geeks: once the deeply awkward and much-maligned members of society- ridiculed by Jocks and long stereotyped on TV and film as socially inept weaklings with a love of bow ties, thick-rimmed glasses and high-waisted slacks. But oh how things have changed. Ever since Adam Brody’s intensely loveable Seth Cohen appeared on screens in the mid noughties as the lonely, quick-witted, Death Cab For Cutie loving geek on The O.C, the tables have been well and truly turned. ‘Geek Chic’ prevails, the once laughable clothing choices of society’s most brainy and introverted have been re-appropriated by the masses. Everyone is falling over themselves to replicate a look that twenty years ago would have posited the wearer of such garments as a human punch-bag for meat-headed bullies.

In the world of TV, sci-fi shows such as Star Trek and Stargate are geek staples but the recent role reversal of geeks as the cultural vanguard posits fantastical shows that would have more likely been derided several years ago as universally acclaimed hits. Game Of Thrones is arguably the biggest TV show in the world whilst The Big Bang Theory, which maintains the long-held geek stereotypes has made veritable superstars of its cast. Doctor Who has landed itself in the Guinness World Record books after the show's fans tuned in to the special 50th anniversary edition of the show in their millions, with fans from almost 100 countries watching the Saturday (23 Nov.) night bonanza. The special, titled 'The Day of the Doctor,' aired on the BBC in the UK and averaged over 10 million viewers in its homeland, but that figure didn't reflect the huge amount of foreign viewers who tuned into the show too.

The highly-anticipated episode, which starred current Time Lord Matt Smith alongside two previous Doctors in David Tennant and John Hurt, was simultaneously aired in 94 countries around the world so that all fans could all follow the story 'live.' The viewing figures gathered by the BBC and the Guinness World Records do not take into account the millions who are estimated to have tuned in via online streaming, which are predicted to have made the final figures even more impressive.

Maleficent - Teaser Trailer

Maleficent is a merciless sorceress who dubs herself the 'Mistress of All Evil'. But she hasn't always had a heart of stone. As a beautiful young girl she was happy and contented with her life in the forested kingdom, but deep down she held within her a powerful strength; a strength that would surface when she became the guardian of the entire land as a brutal army take siege. However, through all her great feats of bravery, she is faced with a callous deception that transforms her completely. In a fit of rage she places a curse on baby Princess Aurora; the daughter of the usurping King's successor; that would see her prick her finger on a spindle and die on her sixteenth birthday. As A New Timelord Looms, Old Dr Who Episodes Are Found In Nigeria

Matt Smith Peter Capaldi

Nine new episodes od Doctor Who – previously thought to be lost forever – have been recovered in Nigeria, prompting hope that other long lost episodes of the classic sci fi adventure might be found, too.

The BBC destroyed many of its original transmission Dr Who tapes between the 60s and 70s, but many were transferred across to film for distribution, usually to foreign broadcasters, and that’s how nine new episodes ended up in Nigeria.

"It's thrilling," said Mark Gatiss, an actor and writer for the 21st Century incarnation of Doctor Who. "Every single avenue seemed to have been exhausted, every now and then something turns up - but to have two virtually complete stories out of the blue is absolutely incredible." (BBC)

Benedict Cumberbatch Wins Praise For His Portrayal Of Julian Assange In 'The Fifth Estate'

Benedict Cumberbatch Daniel Bruhl Stanley Tucci Laura Linney Alicia Vikander Dan Stevens Peter Capaldi

The Fifth Estate has received mixed reviews in time with its release in US cinemas. The film follows the rise of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks to prominence. Although many have described the film as lacking in detail and merely showing the bare bones of the plot, this is summed up by Henry Fitzherbert of the Daily Express who wrote: "if you want to know more about Wikileaks and today's information war the picture is an excellent starting point. As engaging human drama, however, it falls short."

Benedict Cumberbatch's performance as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been highly praised by critics however. He stars in The Fifth Estate, which follows Assange's decision to publish the WikiLeaks website and his turbulent relationship with Daniel Domescheit-Berg at the height of the WikiLeaks controversy. The film, based on true events, shows politics on a local and global scale: from Assange's office to the centres of US government. Many governments worldwide considered Assange a threat to their national security whilst Assange was forced to wrestle with the consequences of his actions, namely that it would put others in danger.

Missing 'Doctor Who' Episodes Found In Nigerian Archive

Doctor Who Matt Smith David Tennant Peter Capaldi

Nine missing Doctor Who episodes have been discovered in Nigeria. During the 1960s and 1970s the BBC destroyed, rather short-sightedly, many of the original transmission tapes of the cult sci-fi series. Fortunately, copies were often shipped out to foreign broadcasters and eleven of these episodes (9 missing ones) have been uncovered in the Nigerian city of Jos.

The episodes discovered originated from the reign of the second Doctor Peter Troughton, who appeared in the role from 1966-69. Troughton's assistant, played by Deborah Watling, has also expressed her joy in the discovery of the tapes as only one storyline from her time in the Tardis remains in the BBC archives.

Omnishambles! How Malcolm Tucker Updated The Oxford English Dictionary

Peter Capaldi Miley Cyrus

Omnishambles - meaning a situation which is shambolic from every possible angle - is amongst the latest words added to the Oxford English Dictionary. It was named word of the year in 2012 after being coined by the writers of the BBC political satire The Thick of It

Fiona McPherson, one of the lexicographers on the judging panel, told the BBC at the time, "It was a word everyone liked, which seemed to sum up so many of the events over the last 366 days in a beautiful way.

It's funny, it's quirky, and it has broken free of its fictional political beginnings, firstly by spilling over into real politics, and then into other contexts."

Peter Capaldi Will Stay Scottish As "Trickier & Fiercer" Doctor Who

Actor Peter Capaldi will become the first identifiably Scottish Timelord when he takes over from current Doc Matt Smith during the eagerly awaited Christmas regeneration episode of Doctor Who. Smith's recently announced successor will be retaining the distinctive Glaswegian tones that helped give his foul mouthed The Thick of It character Malcolm Tucker his distinctive voice.

During a recent Q&A event in Edinburgh with DW showrunner and writer, Steven Moffat, the issue of the new Doctor's identity were addressed, with Moffat responding to the question of accent. "I'd be very surprised if he didn't," he replied when asked if Capaldi would keep his Scottish tones, reports Blogtor Who.

Peter Jackson May Direct 'Doctor Who' Episode, For A Golden Dalek

Peter Jackson Peter Capaldi Steven Moffat Jenna-louise Coleman

Director Peter Jackson expressed an interest in directing an episode of the BBC's long-running time travel drama, Doctor Who, to Entertainment Weekly. The Hobbit director said he'd direct an entire episode with just a golden dalek for pay even though he's known to already have two daleks. The Kiwi filmmaker said "They don't even have to pay me, but I have got my eye on one of those nice new gold-coloured Daleks. They must have a spare one."

However, there has now been a development to Jackson's aspirations: it seems that DW writer Steven Moffat has given a one-off episode the nod. During a recent Q & A event in Edinburgh, the showrunner addressed Jackson's request. "He's serious about it. We talked at The Hobbit premiere - he just wants a Dalek. So we'll give him a Dalek and he'll direct an episode. I think he'd like to us to go to New Zealand. I think it's entirely possible," he said via Blogtor Who.

Bill Nighy Turned Down Doctor Who Role - But When?

Bill Nighy David Tennant Christopher Eccleston Peter Capaldi Matt Smith Doctor Who

Bill Nighy turned down the role of Doctor Who. The actor, in an interview with the Daily Express, revealed he had been offered the part but would not say when. He said he wouldn't reveal this as "the rule is that you are not allowed to say you turned that job down because it's disrespectful" to the actor who obtained the role.

Peter Capaldi, The First 'Doctor Who' With An Oscar. Oh, You Didn't Know?

Peter Capaldi Richard E. Grant Ken Stott Ewan McGregor Kate Hudson

Peter Capaldi is a modest man. You'd never hear him boasting about winning an Oscar. Yep, the Glasgow-born actor, named as the new Time Lord last week, has more in his locker than the foul-mouthed and brilliant spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker from The Thick of It.

In 1995, Forrest Gump fended off competition from Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption and Four Weddings and a Funeral to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Tom Hanks beat Morgan Freeman, Paul Newman and John Travolta to Best Actor, Jessica Lange for Best Actress for Blue Sky and Robert Zemeckis won Best Director.

However, look further down the list of winners and you'll find him. Peter Capaldi, winner of the Academy Award for Live Action Short Film for Franz Kafka's It's A Wonderful Life. Ok, so he tied the award with Peggy Rajski and Randy Stone's Trevor, but he still won.

Peter Capaldi Gets The Bill Nighy Stamp Of Approval For Doctor Who Triumph

Peter Capaldi Bill Nighy

The latest tick to hit the page for Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who is that of Bill Nighy’s; the British actor, talking at the premiere of his new film, About Time, offered up a full endorsement of the Scot, revealing that he’d been offered it in the past but turned it down.

Calling it a “brilliant, inspired choice” Nighy said: “It’s one of those things where you think ‘Of course he’s the Doctor,’” he added. “Why didn’t I think of that before? He’s a marvellous actor. He’ll be very good as the Doctor,” Nighy went on. “He’ll bring a lot of wit and dry humour. He’s elegant and he looks great.” (Metro)

About Time is Richard Curtis’ film as the director announced he’d be stepping down from directing. Nighy plays ‘Dad’, a man whose family has a weird quirk: the men in the family can all time travel. The sci-fi rom-com enjoyed its premiere at London’s Leicester Sq. last night.

When Julian Assange began to leak damaging governmental information online through WikiLeaks, he was praised as a hero by many for finally showing the truth about unethical military operations such as the famous 'collateral murder' video showing an AH-64 Apache taking aim at some unarmed Iraqi journalists. One supporter, Daniel Domscheit-Berg, became good friends with Julian and eventually worked with him in his truth and justice exploits. However, when hundreds of names of government informers were under threat of being leaked, the pair were at a conflict as Daniel understood that many people's lives were at risk if the information got out while Julian remained determined to enlighten the public.

Good

Starting as a clever Contagion-style investigative thriller, this fiercely paced apocalyptic adventure begins to fall apart early on when smart logic is jettisoned for the more visceral thrills of seeing Brad Pitt save the planet. Sadly, almost every major plot point makes no sense at all, and by the time the film reaches its corny finale, we can no longer suspend our disbelief. But at least it's packed with exciting set pieces that get our pulses racing.

It's set in the present day, as strange unrest breaks out around the world. And when the marauding hordes of undead arrive in Philadelphia, the Lane family barely escapes with their lives. Gerry (Pitt) is a former UN military officer who gets help from an ex-boss (Mokoena) to evacuate his wife (Enos) and children to the safety of an aircraft carrier off the coast. Then he's put to work on a globe-hopping mission to find the source of the infection, travelling first to ground zero in Korea, then to infection-free Israel and finally to a World Health centre in Wales. Along the way he picks up a sidekick in the form of feisty Israeli commando Segen (Kertesz).

The script is only ever interested in Gerry, so the filmmakers never bother deepening any other characters. There's some nice chemistry between Pitt and Kertesz, but she remains essentially irrelevant. As the film goes along, Pitt assumes the responsibilities of experts, soldiers and scientists, so he can singlehandedly solve the mystery. It's utterly preposterous, especially since he has to miraculously survive frequent zombie attacks that kill everyone else. And we won't speak of a shockingly ill-conceived plane crash, which removes what's left of the plot's credibility.
