Geeks: once the deeply awkward and much-maligned members of society- ridiculed by Jocks and long stereotyped on TV and film as socially inept weaklings with a love of bow ties, thick-rimmed glasses and high-waisted slacks. But oh how things have changed. Ever since Adam Brody’s intensely loveable Seth Cohen appeared on screens in the mid noughties as the lonely, quick-witted, Death Cab For Cutie loving geek on The O.C, the tables have been well and truly turned. ‘Geek Chic’ prevails, the once laughable clothing choices of society’s most brainy and introverted have been re-appropriated by the masses. Everyone is falling over themselves to replicate a look that twenty years ago would have posited the wearer of such garments as a human punch-bag for meat-headed bullies.

In the world of TV, sci-fi shows such as Star Trek and Stargate are geek staples but the recent role reversal of geeks as the cultural vanguard posits fantastical shows that would have more likely been derided several years ago as universally acclaimed hits. Game Of Thrones is arguably the biggest TV show in the world whilst The Big Bang Theory, which maintains the long-held geek stereotypes has made veritable superstars of its cast. The Doctor’s costume is hugely identifiable with the actor who wore it – Tom Baker’s scarf or Matt Smith’s bowtie being a couple of examples. Capaldi’s outfit will consist of a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, white shirt and black Dr Marten shoes, possibly an echo of the tenth Doctor’s Converse shoes. It's the work of costume designer Howard Burden.

'The Musketeers' Provides Swashbuckling Fun For Some & Camp Tedium To Others - Review Round-Up

Peter Capaldi

BBC1 premiered their new series, The Musketeers, last night (19 Jan.) to an audience who couldn't be more undecided as a whole regarding what they had seen. The latest retelling of Alexandre Dumas's tale of pre-revolution fighters is one of the channel's flagship entertainment programmes for 2014, looking to fill the void for those trying to come to terms with the end of another season of Sherlock. A difficult task indeed, and one that many think has not been accomplished.

The Musketeers
The stars of the new BBC series suited up and ready for action

SPOILERS AHEAD! The show stars Luke Pasqualino, Santiago Cabrera, Tom Burke and Howard Charles as our sword-wielding musketeers, doing good in 1630s Paris in the name of the King and country. That is until the very first scenes however, when Peter Capaldi's villainous Cardinal Richelieu kills off D'Artagnan's (Pasqualino) father and discredits the work of the Musketeers, sending them on the run. Their tale begins from there, trying to prove themselves as loyal and moral fighters who wish to only serve good, whilst also having to dispose of and discredit the evil doings of the twelfth Doctor Who.

Benedict Cumberbatch 'Excited' For Peter Capaldi In Doctor Who, As Filming Begins

Peter Capaldi Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch has said that he is looking forward to seeing his friend Peter Capaldi's first full series of Doctor Who, describing it as 'great news.'  Speaking to the Big Issue the Sherlock star said, "I'm very excited to see him in Doctor Who, he is a class act, Peter, and a great actor."

The pair are no strangers to working together, having both starred in the 2003 ITV series Fortysomething and more recently the Julian Assange biopic, The Fifth Estate.  Filming has just begun on Doctor Who's eighth series and The Thick of It star seems to be easing into his new role nicely. Pictures and a video (below) from the set have shown the Scottish actor riding a mechanical horse in his pyjamas in a very un-Malcolm Tucker like moment Capaldi was also required to ride a real horse but left that to one of the stuntman telling fans he's, "Afraid of the horse and the horse knows it".

Peter Capaldi Loves To Play A "Nasty Piece Of Work"

Peter Capaldi

He may have to battle against evil forces across the universe when playing the latest incarnation of Doctor Who, but for Peter Capaldi the best roles are reserved for these villains he will very soon be battling regularly. The Scot actor will play the evil cardinal in BBC1's ambitious new project The Musketeers and recently spoke with What's On TV about what makes being bad feel so good.

Peter Capaldi
Capaldi got to sport this quite marvellous beard during filming for The Musketeers

Perhaps best known for his role as the foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker in the political sitcom The Thick of It, Capaldi made his name through playing one of the most wretched comedy characters in recent memory, with the Oscar-winner soon getting used to playing the baddie. When it came to his new role in the Alexandre Dumas-inspired series, he apparently couldn't wait to get back to these wicked ways.

The bizarre and hilarious scene will presumably be explained when the new series, which is expected to premiere in late summer this year, begins airing. Though watching Capaldi grow into his eccentric new role was a novelty for fans, for the Doctor Who crew the shoot was just another day at the office as they went about their tasks whilst Capaldi's bonkers horse scene played out.

Peter Capaldi Jenna-louise Coleman Matt Smith

New Years Day was the busiest day of the year for the BBC iPlayer service, with the majority of the nation engaging in what’s widely known as ‘a duvet day’. Basically, hung-over people watched Dr. Who. That’s what happened. It was a pretty monumental episode, too, with Peter Capaldi coming into to replace the now-departed Matt Smith.

Hit BBC comedy Mrs Brown's Boys saw off the likes of Doctor Who, Downton Abbey and Coronation Street in newly published surprise Christmas Day television viewing figures. The BBC may have been the overall winners in terms of audience share on Christmas Day this year, but Brendan O'Carroll's British-Irish sitcom proved consistently the most popular programme of the day.

There was a lot of promise surrounding the Christmas episode of Doctor Who and when it aired on BBC 1 on Christmas Day it very much lived up to the hype and expectation buzzing around the show and the exit of the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith. The exit of Smith also meant one other thing, the regeneration of the Doctor into his twelfth form: enter Peter Capaldi.

The Christmas special - called 'The Time of the Doctor,' in relation to the fiftieth anniversary episode 'The Day of the Doctor' - was full of action and packed in plenty of entertainment in the lead up to Smith's eventual bow out from the show that launched him to stardom. The episode featured Daleks, Time Lords, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, a town called Christmas and more and even Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), the Doctor's former assistant, made an appearance in the show to say farewell the Eleventh Doctor.

The Best Of TV And Film To Watch This Christmas - A Guide

Christmas is weird. If you – like a child – have little to no responsibilities, then it’s a pretty blissful time; you can sit around, eating pate and quaffing liquor, unless you actually are a child, then you’ll be doing something similar with Quality Street and coke.

Would Bill Nighy Have Made A Better Doctor Who Than Peter Capaldi?

Peter Capaldi Bill Nighy

Bill Nighy, the popular British actor best known for his turns in Love Actually and Harry Potter and the Dealthy Hallows, has revealed that he once turned down the role of Doctor Who because he considered the part to come with "too much baggage."

Quite what the actor regards as baggage in unclear, though he probably means that once you play Doctor Who, you're Doctor Who forever. Something challenged somewhat by the exploits of David Tennant in recent years, but whatever.

"I won't tell you when, because the rule is that you are not allowed to say you turned that job down because it's disrespectful to whoever did it," Nighy told the Daily Express at the premiere of his new movie About Time.

Years Of Hard Work Have Led To This, Peter Capaldi On Life Before 'Doctor Who'

Peter Capaldi Doctor Who

Look at us, Peter Capaldi hasn’t filmed a single scene as Doctor Who and we’re already talking about his ‘life before Doctor Who’. In Capaldi’s case, though, the examination of circumstance prior to his recent ‘promotion’ in the acting world is a story worth telling.

See, actors’ lives are normally eulogised, even in movies, played by actors themselves, as things of beauty; the fast cars, champagne, glitzy premieres and mansions are all part of the job. And this is true, but only for George Clooney, really, and that’s mainly to do with his beard.

Even the reverse fortunes actors face is romanticized: living in squalor, scraping up enough money for a bottle of wine and a bus ticket to the next audition. It’s all made to look like the most glamorous thing ever, and not a nice man and woman thinking about selling their moderately nice house because of a money shortage.

Hoardes tuned in to the BBC last night (4th August) to watch Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor and be the first to hear the news. Peter Capaldi was finally unveiled after plenty of hype, reminiscing and dry ice. The 55-year-old new Doctor, famous for his role as the profanity-prone Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It, walked out onstage to a storm of applause and seemed slightly bewildered by it all.

Let's All Hope He Keeps That Fabulous 'Tache!

Well, the Doctor's still white and male, so no major changes there, despite betting and predictions, but Capaldi will represent an older generation than the previous three Doctors, harking back to the original TV series where the Whos were slightly more aged gentlemen than David Tennant or Matt Smith. Keen eyes will have already noticed that Capaldi, a DW fan himself, has already acquainted himself in front of the camera on the series, having appeared in 'The Fires of Pompeii' episode alongside David Tennant.

However, when hundreds of names of government informers were under threat of being leaked, the pair were at a conflict as Daniel understood that many people's lives were at risk if the information got out while Julian remained determined to enlighten the public.

World War Z Review

Good

Starting as a clever Contagion-style investigative thriller, this fiercely paced apocalyptic adventure begins to fall apart early on when smart logic is jettisoned for the more visceral thrills of seeing Brad Pitt save the planet. Sadly, almost every major plot point makes no sense at all, and by the time the film reaches its corny finale, we can no longer suspend our disbelief. But at least it's packed with exciting set pieces that get our pulses racing.

It's set in the present day, as strange unrest breaks out around the world. And when the marauding hordes of undead arrive in Philadelphia, the Lane family barely escapes with their lives. Gerry (Pitt) is a former UN military officer who gets help from an ex-boss (Mokoena) to evacuate his wife (Enos) and children to the safety of an aircraft carrier off the coast. Then he's put to work on a globe-hopping mission to find the source of the infection, travelling first to ground zero in Korea, then to infection-free Israel and finally to a World Health centre in Wales. Along the way he picks up a sidekick in the form of feisty Israeli commando Segen (Kertesz).

The script is only ever interested in Gerry, so the filmmakers never bother deepening any other characters. There's some nice chemistry between Pitt and Kertesz, but she remains essentially irrelevant. As the film goes along, Pitt assumes the responsibilities of experts, soldiers and scientists, so he can singlehandedly solve the mystery. It's utterly preposterous, especially since he has to miraculously survive frequent zombie attacks that kill everyone else. And we won't speak of a shockingly ill-conceived plane crash, which removes what's left of the plot's credibility.

Sienna Miller, Sean Bean (and Alan Partridge) Amongst BAFTA Nominees

BAFTA Sienna Miller Imelda Staunton Peter Capaldi Sean Bean

Sienna Miller, Imelda Staunton, Peter Capaldi and Sarah Lancashire are among the nominees for the 2013 television BAFTAs. London based actress Miller - a star on both sides of the Atlantic - gets the nod for her role as Tipi Hedren in the BBC's Alfred Hitchcock drama The Girl, which scooped four nominations in total. Staunton received a best supporting actress nomination, also for The Girl, while Lancashire was rewarded for her performance in the romantic-drama Last Tango in Halifax.

Peter Capaldi is up for best actor for BBC Two's recently-axed 1950's drama The Hour, though also for his role as the foul-mouthed spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in political comedy The Thick Of It. The latter nomination - for best male performance in a comedy programme - will see Capaldi pitted against Steve Coogan's return as Alan Partridge in Welcome To The Place Of My Life, as well as Inbetweeners star Greg Davies.

Elsewhere in the acting categories, Sheridan Smith received her first BAFTA nomination for her portrayal as Mrs Biggs, in the true story of the wife of the Great Train Robber, Ronnie Biggs, and Rebecca Hall was nominated for Parade's End. Sean Bean is nominated for his performance as transvestite Tracie in Accused, the BBC drama series which follows people accused of crimes as they await the verdict. Bean's performance was clearly one of the stand-out turns of the year and he won best actor for the role at the Royal Television Society Awards in March.

RECAP: The Hour Series 2, Episode 1, Dominic West Returns

Dominic West Peter Capaldi Ben Whishaw

Dominic West and The Hour returned to television screens in the UK last night (November 14) as the show continued to struggle to move away from comparisons to US drama Mad Men.

Set around the fictional news show The Hour, series two episode one saw Dominic West reprise his arrogant character Hector Madden, whose levels of self-confidence had gone through the roof since finally being made presenter of the show. The first episode sees him as a full blown national celebrity, hanging out in West End clubs and being snapped cavorting with an array of girls; this is set against a back drop of rising crime rate and political unrest, with a government under spending on the police and effectively leaving people to fend for themselves. Truly the environment is ripe for a man of Madden’s callousness to rise to the top.

A new addition to the cast though has potential to steal the limelight in future episodes, with Peter Capaldi joining the team as the new head of news Randall Brown, with many hoping he can bring about change in a news room that’s seen Madden’s ego take precedent. His character’s chemistry with foreign desk editor Lix Storm certainly suggested there was more to come from those two and offered a break away from the scene setting taking place with Madden. There was a lack of Ben Whishaw as Freddie Lyon though; he was fired at the end of the last season as The Hour was taken off air and for the first half of the episode he isn’t involved at all.

Malcolm Tucker's 'Omnishambles' Named Word Of The Year

Peter Capaldi Rebecca Front

“Omnishambles,” a word coined by The Thick Of It’s scriptwriters back in 2009 has been named ‘word of the year’ by the people at Oxford English Dictionary.

The satirical comedy has thrown up many a comical phrase – most of which are courtesy of the foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker (played by Peter Capaldi). And most of which are far too rude to repeated here. “Omnishambles” was the word given to a situation which is “shambolic from every possible angle,” according to the BBC.

We’re big fans of Malcolm Tucker here at Contact and are pleased to see that the show is making an impact on the English language. In fact “omnishambles” proved to be such a popular phrase that it even made its way over the Atlantic during the US election campaigns. It was originally used in The Thick of It when Malcolm Tucker berated the Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship, Nicola Murray – played by Rebecca Front - in one of his typical lengthy, expletive-ridden rants. More recently, however, it has mutated into “Romneyshambles,” to refer to Mitt Romney’s many public gaffes that he made during his visit to the UK.
