The 66-year-old Congolese star's death was confirmed on Sunday (24Apr16).
Footage from what was his final concert has been posted online, and shows members of his band rushing to his side after he collapsed.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Born Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba, Papa Wemba became an African star in the 1970s with the band Zaiko Langa Langa, and he moved to Europe as a member of Viva La Musica.
He toured with Peter Gabriel in the 1990s and appeared on the British rocker's Secret World Live album.
He spent three months in jail in 2003 after French and Belgian authorities accused him of helping Congolese immigrants illegally obtain visas.
