Robbins collapse was sudden and many in the audience initially thought it was a part of the performance, according to reports in the Independent. It soon become obvious Robbins was in distress when arena staff rushed on to the stage and the curtain was dropped. A spokesperson for Manchester Arena issued a statement explaining, as the BBC reports, that the performance was stopped "so we could get Ted the help he needed". "He's been taken to hospital and is in a stable condition," the spokesperson added.

Robbins' sister, one of his many relatives in the audience, has been keeping fans updated with his progress. "My brother Ted was taken ill on stage. He's been taken to a local hospital. Thank you for all your good wishes and concern. He's a fighter," actress Kate Robbins tweeted.

The comedian plays Den Perry in Phoenix Nights Live, based on Peter Kay's musical of the same name. The show was the first of 15 which are being staged in aid of Comic Relief although it is uncertain as yet if Robbins will be well enough to return to perform in the sold out shows.
