Widower Joseph spends his days walking the streets and frequenting various pubs in an industrial town in England. He is incredibly violent and sometimes takes out his anger on passersby and harmless pets.
One particular day, Joseph is involved in a fight. Afterwards, the injured man stumbles into a charity shop - and into Christian shop owner Hannah's life.
Hannah comes across as cheerful and devout, traits that annoy Joseph initially. But every day after work, Hannah goes home to her abusive husband, James. Joseph is drawn back to Hannah's charity shop time and time again as he learns the reality of Hannah's life.
Gradually, Joseph and Hannah grow closer as a result of their broken lives. Adding to Joseph's problems are the self-centered neighbour and his pit-bull and the deteriorating health of one of Joseph's only friends. Hannah also finds out about the death of his wife and how, one day, Joseph kicked his dog to death after being thrown out of a pub for starting trouble.
Joseph and Hannah hang on to the shared belief that there is hope for the both of them: that Joseph will find a way out of his self-destructive life and Hannah will find a way out of a loveless, abusive marriage.
