It's the 1970's and the relationship between Russians and the US is still very volatile. Black Mass Trailer

Whitey Bulger has had the FBI under his thumb for too long, and now people are starting to notice. How can a criminal mastermind responsible for every major offence in the city pass by seemingly unnoticed for an entire lifetime? It's true he landed in Alcatrez at a young age, but the older the more dangerous he becomes; a kingpin of the South Boston criminal underworld who escaped justice by informing authorities of all movements of the rival gang, the Italian Mafia, as suggested by his most useful contact and friend John Connolly. But the Irish Winter Hill Gang is growing ever more powerful, and Bulger's feelings of invincibility lead to more and more murders and destruction. It's time he was stopped, but finding him is not going to be easy.

Black Mass - Teaser Trailer

Irish-American criminal mastermind Whitey Bulger was arguably one of the most dangerous men in America before his arrest in 2011 at the age of 81. He'd already spent time in Alcatrez as a much younger man, having spent a lot of time on the streets of South Boston. However, by the 70s he proved to be the FBI's best tool in controlling organised crime within the country, and he was eventually persuaded by his friend John Connolly to be their informant in all workings of the rival Italian Mafia. However, it's not safe business being both a highly respected gangster and a police informant, and while much of his activity is being largely ignored as he rises to become top of the Irish Winter Hill Gang, it seems he is gaining too many killings and dodgy dealings under his belt to go unnoticed.

Sometimes, the greatest conflicts and clash with smaller and internal conflicts in a major way. Bobby Fischer (Tobey Maguire) is the greatest chess player in the United States, and he is desperate to seek out the greatest players in the world. The problem is, they happen to be Russian, and with the Cold War at its height, the American government steps in to inform him that his game will be used as propaganda. This sends him down a path of introspection, as the pressure of a simple chess match holds the weight of the Cold War upon his shoulders.

Johnny Depp Shows Off Acting Talent In Monstrous 'Black Mass' Trailer [Pictures]

Johnny Depp Benedict Cumberbatch Kevin Bacon Joel Edgerton Peter Sarsgaard Adam Scott David Harbour

With the recent trailer release for 'Black Mass', it's clear to see why the world fell in love with Johnny Depp. A short clip within the trailer perfectly demonstrates the veteran actor's ability to switch at will between fun-loving and friendly, to nightmarishly monstrous, in a great acting showcase. And that creepy make-up job certainly helps.

In recent years, Johnny Depp has received a critical savaging, specifically for films like 'The Lone Ranger' and 'Transcendence', but this triumphant return to form may be just what he needs before launching into an 'Alice in Wonderland' sequel, and a fifth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film.

Black Mass - First Look Trailer

Sometimes, the greatest hiding place is in plain sight. For twelve years from the mid-1990s, he was the FBI's second most wanted fugitive, behind Osama Bin Laden. Throughout the 1970s, he was an FBI informant, revealing information to bring down an Italian American crime family, and he was the brother of a US senator. But really, his informant years were to stop another family from invading his own turf. Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp) was one of the most brutal and violent criminals in Boston, being the secret puppet master behind one of the most dangerous crime families in history.

Night Moves Review

Very Good

This may be a slow-burning thriller about eco-terrorists, but it's also directed by Kelly Reichardt (Meek's Cutoff), a filmmaker who maintains an oddly aloof perspective while moving at her own steady pace. While this original approach offers fresh insight into the subject matter, it also creates a distance with the audience. But the subtle tone and complex morality add a strong resonance to the subject matter.

It's set in the rural American Northwest, where organic farmer Josh (Jesse Eisenberg) is collaborating with zen-retreat worker Dena (Dakota Fanning) and ex-military loose cannon Harmon (Peter Sarsgaard) to plan a bombing that will make people stop and think about what humanity is doing to the planet. Their target is a dam in Oregon that provides hydroelectric power, and their rationale is that no one needs to run their iPods 24 hours a day. After painstakingly setting up their subtle but devastating attack, they neglect to consider one possible outcome. And what follows forces them to re-examine their actions and motivations. It also causes a rift in their camaraderie that makes the outside threat feel even greater.

Despite the intense plot, this is definitely not an action movie, as Reichardt traces these three people's careful plan in sharp detail while quietly exploring the big issues that compel them to act. Oddly, these activist-terrorists seem oblivious that their violent plan is unlikely to make any difference in the grand scheme of things, and that very few people will ever understand their point. But they're such true believers that they simply can't see outside their circle. The acting is subdued and bracingly honest, creating complicated characters who say more without dialogue than with it. Sarsgaard has the most intriguing role, since Harmon has an undercurrent of menace that the others can't help but notice. And Reichardt lets the actors carry the scenes, using their expressive faces to fill in the details of the plot.

Night Moves Trailer

Josh (Jesse Eisenberg), a radical environmentalist teams up with high school drop-out, Dena (Dakota Fanning), and ex-marine Harmon (Peter Sarsgaard) in an attempt to send a message to the industrialised world they stand against: the bombing of a hydro-electric dam. The suspenseful political thriller delves into the world of extremists, desperate to protest in favour of their beliefs - even if it pushes them into illegal activity, doing so.

Night Moves comes to us courtesy of indie film director Kelly Reichardt, and having made the rounds of various, prestigious film festivals, it is due for a UK release this month. It has already been chosen for the official selection for the London, Venice and Toronto International Film Festival, and has enjoyed favourable reviews from critics and the public worldwide.

It has, however, been criticised for having major similarities in both in both character and plot with Edward Abbey's novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang. In 2012, a lawsuit was filed against the film, as it clashed with the novel of which a film adaptation was in pre-production.

Amanda Seyfried On Playing Porn Star In 'Lovelace': "Linda Affected Me Deeply"

Amanda Seyfried Peter Sarsgaard

Amanda Seyfried's new movie Lovelace may have been rollicked by critics for its thin plot and lack of bravery to go deeper (quite), but the Les Misérables actress has spoken about why, although she's played a wide range of roles, it is Deep Throat porn star Linda Lovelace who is likely to stay with her the longest.

Amanda Seyfried
Amanda Overcame Her Fears Of Taking On Such An Intense Role.

Born Boreman, Lovelace rose to cult porn notoriety in the 1970s after she appeared in the highest earning pornographic film of all time, Deep Throat. Her skills were exploited by her abusive husband Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard) after it became known that she was aroused by deep throat stimulation and she became a poster girl for sexual liberation through cinema. However, she would later join feminist and anti-pornography movements, describing the adult movie genre as "legalised rape."
