Pharrell Says He Could Never Rap Like Jay Z

Pharrell Williams Jay Z Daft Punk Robin Thicke

With pretty much the whole world at his feet having had the biggest selling single of the last few years, you could perhaps excuse Pharrell Williams for being immodest. But in a new interview he was very humble when comparing himself to one of his musical idols Jay-Z.

Speaking with Germany’s GQ Style magazine, the 41 year old said he would “sound braggy” if he were to rap like Jay-Z and use the same lyrics that he does. He believes that all artists should find their own style and that imitating someone else is unlikely to pay off.

Critics Of "The Voice's" Star-Making Power Are Missing The Point, Says Pharrell

Pharrell Williams Adam Levine

The Voice has taken more than a couple hits of criticism recently: it’s dull, it’s repetitive, it just can’t keep up in the ratings race. One of the biggest is that so far, NBC’s answer to American Idol has failed to produce launch a lasting career in music for any of its winners. But here’s what  Pharrell Williams, now in his second season as a panellist on the popular (sort of) format had to say to the critics – aka a group of journalists at the show’s Season 8 press conference.

Pharrell Wiliams
After just one season on the show, Pharrell is done with the criticism.

“I don’t understand why we have these interviews, and people ask the same question every time,” Williams said via The Wrap. And that wasn’t where the rant ended.

It’s time to talk about the Grammys – which, of course, would be impossible without talking about Taylor Swift and Sam Smith. The young powerhouses of pop came out on top with two and four nods, respectively. But they had to wait a while to celebrate this year. Instead of the typical primetime concert, the Grammys turned Nomination Day into an actual day-long event this year.

Early on, Sam Smith led the pack with four nods.

Starring Iggy Azalea, Beyonce and Smith himself as presenters and Pharrell Williams and Ed Sheeran as presenters, there was quite a lot of back patting going on. "Very happy for Miley," said Williams, when asked what he thought about the nominations. "Super happy for Beyoncé. A lot of great names. ... Ed. That's big."

The 1990s marked a turning point for rap and hip hop, with plenty of artists making their mark on the scene with seminal releases. Nas was one of them, and now his landmark debut 'Illmatic' is being explored in a telling documentary, 'Nas: Time Is Illmatic'.

'Time Is Illmatic' explores the legacy of Nas' debut

Like many young black men exposed to rap culture, Nas (born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones) was forced to live a life of fear and poverty as a youth, with guns and killings being a thing of daily terror. After his early collaborator Ill Will was shot dead and his brother injured in the process, it was time to write an album revealing the truth about ghetto culture - and the fear and rivalry that comes with it. 'Nas: Time Is Illmatic' explores his moving relationship with his parents against the grim backdrop of Queensbridge, as he rose up to become one of the greatest rapstars of all time.

Pharrell Williams And T.I. Talk Song Writing

Pharrell Williams T.I

Almost every musical writer has their own way of working on a project, and now Pharrell Williams and T.I. have revealed their differing writing processes. T.I.’s latest album ‘Paperwork’, was produced by Pharrell, who also worked on the album’s title track, after meeting over the course of T.I.’s album ‘I’m Serious’. T.I. explained this, saying: “I think the first time we met was the ‘I’m Serious’ session, if I ain’t mistaken, or maybe we may have met in passing at some parties here and there before then, but, you know, our first time really have the, I guess, elaborated extended conversation was the ‘I’m Serious’”.

T.I.'s new album, 'Paperwork', was produced by Pharell Williams

While Williams take a more traditional approach to musical writing, i.e. using pen and paper, he was shocked to discover that T.I. had a remarkably different process. "That's when I first saw you, like, how you wrote. 'What's this guy doing? He's just standing there.'" Williams explained. The process in question, is how T.I. choses to do all his musical writing in his head. "Jay [Z] was the only other person that I knew that, that, did that. Cos I always thought that was an anomaly." This came even more of a shock to Williams as the process took place when T.I. was around 19 and he himself was around 30.

Weird Al Drops Pharrell And Robin Thicke Parodies Ahead Of "Mandatory Fun" Release

Weird Al Yankovic Pharrell Williams Robin Thicke

Parodies of Pharrell’s Happy  may be well past their sell-by date, but good things take time, as Weird Al Yankovic will probably tell you. That’s the one he released this week. Tacky, a take on Pharrell’s smash hit from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack has the same innocuous lyrics and bright colours that have been luring the easily amused to Weird Al’s parodies for decades.

Weird Al Yankovic
The curls aren't going away, in case you were wondering.

And that’s not all! Apparently the 52-year-old comedian has six more spoofs in the pipeline. According to the Reddit AMA Yankovic did on Tuesday, he will be releasing eight videos in eight days, ahead of his new album, Mandatory Fun. The second one, which was released today, is of that other big Pharrell hit, which nobody really wants to acknowledge these days – Blurred Lines. Except in Al’s case, it’s Word Crimes,, in which he lament the serious issue of bad grammar, spelling and punctuation online. Well, at least it’s a better message than the original, though admittedly Robin Thicke didn’t set the bar too high.

Lionel Richie Inspires From The BET Stage, Despite Unfortunate Typo

Lionel Richie John Legend Pharrell Williams Yolanda Adams

Lionel Richie’s Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony during the BET Awards on Sunday was moving, inspiring and… wrong. Well, part of it was, anyway. Richie received musical tributes by Pharrell Williams, John Legend and Yolanda Adams, each of whom performed a song by the soul legend.

Despite the typo, the ceremony and musical tributes marched on.

Even though his name was repeated multiple times during the show and we’re guessing BET staff know how to use spell check, someone still misspelled Richie’s name as Ritchie on screen. Before the mistake was noticed or acknowledged, Twitter took the typo and ran with it. The misspelled name quickly started trending on the website and many people seemed unaware of the mistake.

During the televised coverage of the Black Entertainment Television Awards on Sunday night (29th June), which was watched by millions around the world, the broadcasting team managed to spell Richie's surname as "Ritchie."

Sure, plenty of worse things could have happened, but it's still a pretty embarrassing move considering Richie was practically the guest of honor at the bash. To make matters worse, the mistake flashed on the screen in large lettering as the 65 year-old soul star headed to collect his prize.

Soon the hashtag "#lionelritchie" began trending on Twitter as viewers picked up on the blunder and quickly spread the news leading to embarrassment for the show's production team.
