Real Booty Music - Friday 6th March 2015

Danish design-led headphone company AIAIAI and Dutch design company OWOW get down low and twerky with Real Booty Music - a project, which sees the Danish audio designers create state-of-the-art technology that, bluntly put, enables dancers to play music using their rear-end. The Real Booty Music project, an experiment that makes a new track exploring the musical possibilities of twerking through placing it in a technology-driven, creative context and letting the dance "do the talking", the end result is new music for the dancefloor and, of course, the headphones. The overall idea was to let Lisbon-based DJ and producer, Joao Barbosa AKA Branko, make a new track by utilising the buttock movements of Denmark's Twerking Queen Louise - real name Louise Kjølsen - to build the beat. The result is a track titled Cascavel, Portuguese for rattlesnake. In the words of Owow: "The Booty Drum is a device that records movement through accelerometers attached to the dancer's booty. These movements translate into a lot of unique velocities and directions of movement. The movements, which are being mapped into unique MIDI values through Arduino hardware and processing software, can in this way be used to trigger samples and create sounds in Ableton. As every single movement sends out a unique set of values, the dancer is able to play around with sounds." Although twerking is synonymous with contemporary pop performers: Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj, it was the nineties New Orleans' bounce music scene and the rap tune DJ Jubilee's "Do the Jubilee All" in 1993 - with the call and response chant "Twerk baby, twerk baby, twerk, twerk, twerk" - that pioneered the dance craze.
