Bombay Sapphire's Sustainable Distillery - Another Reason to Love Gin! - Wednesday 30th September 2015

There are lots of reasons to love gin, but just in case you are undecided, here's another one... The Bombay Sapphire Distillery! Located in the picturesque county of Hampshire, this gorgeous green distillery in the former Laverstock Mill, which opened just under a year ago, combines history, modern design and nature conservation In renovating Laverstoke Mill, a 300 year old paper mill, Bombay Sapphire worked with Heatherwick Studio to preserve the natural ecology and heritage of the site; every reasonable effort was made to ensure that process and buildings were as sustainable and efficient as possible. "To bring clarity to such a disparate site it became obvious to us that it would not be enough to simply restore the existing historic buildings, but that we needed to reveal the River Test once more and to use it as a device around which to organise everything," explains studio founder Thomas Heatherwick. "To turn these thoughts into reality we worked with government agencies English Heritage and English Nature to meticulously restore twenty-three of the existing historic buildings, to conserve the local wildlife and also to negotiate the removal of nine of the most recent industrial structures and a poor quality bridge." .Throughout the construction process, building materials have been recycled from demolished buildings elsewhere on site, structure and facades have been retained where possible and new materials have been responsibly sourced where possible. The ecological value of the site has been enhanced through native species planting and the re-design of the riverbank to incorporate a bio diverse habitat. This included temporarily relocating over 400 fish by hand and ensuring that provisions were made for colonies of bats and a bevy of otters! The most striking feature of the distillery are the stunning Glasshouses designed by Heatherwick Studio which are a perfect juxtaposition to the surrounding Georgian and Victorian architecture.
