Port Isla - Live At Leeds 2015 Interview

Port Isla hit the second stage at the Leeds Beckett Union late in the afternoon at Live At Leeds. The Norwich band's forthcoming EP 'A.L.I.V.E' became Radio 1's Hottest Record - and it's easy to see why. Their mix of uplifting lyrics and restful guitars make for a summery vibe that left the crowd feeling wistful as it drizzled outside. We sat down with them before the show to find out where the group dubbed "Great British indie-folk, executed properly" are headed and why they're taking a forward-thinking approach to releasing songs.

ContactMusic: Well it's very nice to meet you! How's it going in Leeds today?
Henry Kilmister [Drums]: Really good!
Stanley Spilman [Lead guitar]: I've been to Leeds loads seeing my friends at uni here.

CM: Why did you decide to release your two singles for free?
SS: I think that that system just works. Not being conceited in any way, but it makes sense because people are doing you a favour by listening to it. And if they like it then they'll tell their friends and that's worth way more to us than however much it is to get CDs made up.
HK: That person telling five or 10 of their friends about your band is worth a lot more than 99p for a single - however much we get from that. It's just a nice way of doing things too. Everyone likes getting free stuff! We hand out these postcards and free CDs at our gigs. If people are undecided about you at the gig you know they probably wouldn't buy a CD but if you give them one for free, they may at least listen to it on the way home and you've got your name out there.

Live At Leeds 2015 Preview

It's nearly that time again! More stellar acts will again flock to the spectacular Northern city of Leeds for a day of non-stop musical exhilaration. Plus, Live At Leeds 2015 will play host to some stunning new venues, and what better time to experience them?

Live At Leeds 2015 Preview

Without further ado, then, we present to you your must-see schedule for Saturday (May 2nd 2015). It's been tricky to work out this year, however, as every year each line-up gets better and better and this year is honestly no exception. So there may be a few overlaps, but you certainly won't be bored.

The Riptide Movement - Oporto - 12:00
Getting the day off to a low key start is The Riptide Movement at the small but very quaint Oporto bar. The only problem here is that a set from these Dubliners is bound to leave you singing along for the rest of the day ('All Works Out', for example), but it will at least get you geared up for their upcoming debut album 'Getting Through' released on June 1st, which has already been critically acclaimed in Ireland.

Port Isla and Kate Miller at The Lexington Live Review

Children have Christmas, chocolate addicts have Easter and new music fans have Spring. It's the time of the year we get to fill up the proverbial Christmas stocking and dine on an assortment of new EPs, albums and gigs from the crème de la crème of emerging acts.

Port Isla and Kate Miller at The Lexington Live Review

Much like Christmas and Easter, it's important to pick your presents wisely, and The Lexington has a knack of doing exactly that. Port Isla's sold out show comes off the back of two hugely promising EP releases and ahead of support slots with Kodaline and Mr James Bay.

Talking of support acts, tonight's comes in the form of one of the most exciting artists around at the moment. 20-year-old Kate Miller released her debut EP 'Neophyte' in 2014 and, on that evidence, you'd be brave to bet against Kate being the next breakthrough from this brilliant conveyor belt of female solo artists. It's a subtly powerful live set, which peaks with 'Black Rivers - In My Mind', 'Fortify' and the irresistible 'Collar Up'.
