While much is always made of Kate Middleton’s fashion choices by the press, it seems the royal couple will be turning the tables during their U.S. visit, as it’s time for the journalist’s attire to come under scrutiny. Yes, while the British press are long used to dealing with protocol when it comes to the royal family, American journalists were shocked to learn that there is indeed a dress code for the press during the royal visit.

Prince Willam and Kate MiddletonThe Duke and Duchess expect no less than your Sunday best.

"Journalists wishing to cover Royal engagements, whether in the United Kingdom or abroad, should comply with the dress code on formal occasions out of respect for the guests of The Queen, or any other member of the Royal Family," reads the announcement on the British Monarchy's official website.

This dress code means what is described as ‘smart attire’, which for men includes a jacket and tie and for women involves a trouser or skirt suit. The statement goes on to say that “Those wearing jeans or trainers will not be admitted and casually dressed members of the media will be turned away.”

But it seems many American journalist were caught a little off guard by the royal wardrobe recommendations. "Why should the United States' press corps — who barely bother to brush the muffin crumbs off their polo shirts before lobbing questions at the President of the United States — schlep extra pieces of clothing to work just so they can make small talk with a (perfectly nice-seeming) British air ambulance pilot-in-training and a former chain-store accessories buyer?" asked a New York magazine article.

While Washington politics site Politico wrote, "Our much more refined brothers across the pond are apparently worried that the American press corps, with our pride of the haggard and ill-dressed journalists, won’t be appropriately attired when interacting with the royals."
