Pussy Riot Linked To 'Spring Breakers' Sequel 'Second Coming'

Pussy Riot James Franco Vanessa Hudgens Rachel Korine Selena Gomez

The sequel to Spring Breakers, the hit 2012 comedy, is going ahead and Pussy Riot may be the stars.

Pussy Riot
Nadya Tolokonnikova is one of the most notorious members of Pussy Riot.

Pussy Riot, the highly politicised Russian punk band, consists of a number of women the most prominent being Nadezhda “Nadya” Tolokonnikova and Maria “Masha” Alyokhina. They have, allegedly, a meeting with Spring Breakers: Second Coming director Jonas Akerlund and the film’s producers which is scheduled to take place in Cannes later this week, according to Variety.

With Irvine Welsh On Board, A "Spring Breakers" Sequel Is Underway

Selena Gomez Ashley Benson Vanessa Hudgens Rachel Korine

When the end credits rolled on Spring Breakers last year, it didn’t seem like sequel material – all in all, things were pretty neatly tied up at the end of the original. Don’t worry, this article is completely spoiler-free. According to Vincent Marabal, speaking for French production company Wild Bunch, Spring Breakers: The Second Coming (a working title) will not be a direct sequel, but it will reference some of the original characters. The French powerhouse studio will be pitching the project at Cannes this year, according to MTV.

Spring Breakers Still
Apparently Spring Breakers caused enough of a stir to warrant a sequel.

Because director Harmony Korine is not on board this year (neither are any of the original, the studio has attached Swedish filmmaker Jonas Akerlund – the mind behind Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi and Telephone videos. So if nothing else, we can expect some continuity in the neon colour scheme. Akerlund will direct from a script by Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting, Filth) meaning the tone might get heavier, if anything. The plot summary, per Wild Bunch, proclaims: “the Spring Breakers doing battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them.”

James Franco Wants An Oscar For 'Spring Breakers'. No, Really.

There have been plenty of creative tactics played by movies launching Oscar campaigns to sway voters, including persuasive attempts by The Fighter and The Kings Speech, but one actor has decided to make his bid as blunt as possible to get attention.

James Franco As 'Alien' In Spring Breakers

James Franco is being supported by the distributor of his movie Spring Breakers, A24 Films, to win a 'Best Supporting Actor' nomination for his corn-rowed, golden-grilled character of Alien. A24 has compiled campaign materials, that will apparently be unveiled shortly, that feature Franco as his rapper/gangster character, according to sources speaking to THR. Franco as Alien is shown holding an Oscar statuette in each hand with the slogan "CONSIDER THIS SH*T", referencing his character's boastful speech about all the amazing things he owns, or "cool sh*t."

Spring Breakers Review

Very Good

Arthouse filmmaker Harmony Korine (Mister Lonely) comes dangerously close to making a mainstream movie with this blackly comical thriller. While the film is often very funny, and constantly challenges our preconceptions by veering in directions we don't expect, it's also an intriguing exploration of America's hedonistic subculture.

Gomez and Hudgens also crush their Disney princess images as Faith and Candy, who decide they want to go to Florida for spring break with their pals Brit and Cotty (Benson and Korine). But they've spent all their cash on drugs, so they rob a restaurant and head to the beach. After indulging in a series of raucous parties, they end up in jail and are bailed out by a sleazy rapper-gangster who calls himself Alien (Franco). He takes them under his wing, getting them involved in his war with a dangerous cross-town rival (Mane).

The film is shot in lurid colours, with the girls wearing little more than fluorescent bikinis, sometimes accompanied with pink balaclavas. And the score by Skrillex and Cliff Martinez is visceral and hugely atmospheric, adding unexpected texture to the way Korine explores physicality, drugs and violence. It's also quite deliberate that, apart from the religiously minded Faith, these young women kind of blur together anonymously, like all the other bikini babes at the various beer-chugging, arms-in-the-air parties.

Spring Breakers Wide Release - Is This One Worth Seeing?

James Franco Selena Gomez Ashley Benson Vanessa Hudgens Rachel Korine Harmony Korine

Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers is a big deal this… well, this spring break.

And ok, it may be mostly because of the semi-naked girls gracing the landscape throughout the whole flick, but still, Spring Breakers isn’t without its merits, if you take it for what it is. The popping color palette and at times seizure-inducing editing might put some more serious movie-goers of this, but it certainly does a lot to entice the target audience – which, for this visual romp would be bored teens and twenty-somethings. But don’t be fooled – beyond the bikinis and hot pink tones, Spring Breakers, which premiered last week at SXSW does have some substance as well. Ok, a little substance. But still.

Firstly, let’s talk about Disney actresses playing girls gone wild. Well, it’s fun and, let’s be honest – it’s a much healthier way for ladies like Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez to break out of the Disney mould than, say leaking nude pictures online. And, to be fair, Gomez does show remarkable depth of character – well, as much as the Spring Breakers script will allow anyway.

Selena Gomez Talks Spring Breakers And The Challenges Of Breaking Out Of The Disney Mould

Selena Gomez Harmony Korine Vanessa Hudgens Ashley Benson Rachel Korine

The highly anticipated Harmony Korine flick, Spring Breakers has seen its premiere this week and one of its stars, Selena Gomez, has been making the rounds promoting it.

This has, of course, been a huge transition for the former Disney girl – from Disney channel to R-rated flicks is certainly a big jump to make. However, in an interview with MTV, Selena commented that she enjoyed the chance to break out of her mould and experiment as an actress: "It wasn't necessarily about the reaction as it was just for me wanting to do something that was creatively challenging for me, because acting is everything to me," she said. "And it's the reason why I'm here." Gomez also mentioned that she appreciated the chance to work with indie director Corine, as his style was exactly in the direction she was planning to take with her career. Interestingly enough though, it was apparently Selena’s mom, who gave her the final push to star in the R-rated flick: "Well, my mom is actually a big Harmony Korine fan, and we got the script through my agency," she told MTV News during a chat at South by Southwest. "I read it, I watched all of his movies with my mom and [watched] interviews, and I wanted to be a part of it."

James Franco, Selena Gomez, Spring BreakersSpring Break B*tches! James Franco And The Cast of Spring Breakers

James Franco playing a drug and arms dealer? Selena Gomez doing his dirty work? Gucci Mane parading around like he owns the joint?! Spring Breakers is shaping up to be wackiest movie of the year. Sure, on paper it's got Razzies written all over it, though we're predicting  Harmony Korine's (Gummo) new film will be one of the most talked about flicks of 2013.

The film stars Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine as four college girls who are stuck on campus while their fellow students party on the coast for Spring Break. Of course the only thing to do in that situation is rob a restaurant in order to fund their vacation, right? Of course, that's exactly what they do. The trailer sees the girls heading for the ocean in high spirits, but wait! What's that we hear? Police sirens!

Spring Breakers Trailer

Four beautiful college girls; Brit, Faith, Candy and Cotty; live together in a college dorm and lead distinctly boring, repetitive lives. Spring break is coming up, however, and the girls are determined to have the best vacation ever hoping to jet out towards sun, sand and freedom. Saving money hasn't been easy, so the group decide to don balaclavas and guns to rob a restaurant in town in order to obtain enough money for their spring break adventures. It isn't long after they get to their destination, though, before the cops catch up with them and they are taken straight to court still in their beachwear. Luckily for them, platinum-toothed drug dealer Alien sees potential in the girls and bails them out of a lengthy jail stay in exchange for a little job he needs doing in his own crime circle. Just how determined are these girls to have the best spring break vacation of their lives?

'Spring Breakers' is a new crime comedy directed and written by Harmony Korine ('Gummo', 'Kids', 'Mister Lonely'). It was in line for the 69th Venice International Film Festival's highest honor the Golden Lion award and will hit US movie theaters on March 22nd 2013.

Starring: James Franco, Ashley Benson, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Korine, Heather Morris, Cait Taylor, Lauren Vera, Emma Holzer, Gucci Mane, Ash Lendzion, Debbie Whited, Vivian Fleming-Alvarez, Josh Randall, Tony Robinette,

James Franco Unveils New Music Video

James Franco Selena Gomez Vanessa Hudgens Ashley Benson Rachel Korine

James Franco is clearly a very talented person indeed as the actor has taken a short break from his usual trade to become a part-time rock star, unveiling a music video to go with his original song, 'Love in the Old Days.'

The track is a collaboration with his long-time friend Tim O'Keefe and is about romance in the 1960s. If acting and singing/song writing wasn't enough, then Franco has also decided to go another one better by directing the video, making sure his fingers are in as many pies as possible.

The 127 Hours actor has long demonstrated his multiple talents in the past, being a published writer as well as occasional journalist. His foray into music then cannot come as that much of a surprise to many then it would seem.
