Spotlight Review

Extraordinary

This film demonstrates that you don't need guns to make an exciting thriller. Based on a true story, this is a journalistic procedural following a team of newspaper writers who take on a corrupt system. The outcome is well-known (they won a Pulitzer Prize and launched the global investigation into child abuse by Catholic priests), but the film is still utterly riveting, beautifully written and played to perfection.

In 2001, the Boston Globe's investigative Spotlight team is working to report the biggest stories in the city. So newly arrived senior editor Marty (Liev Schreiber) asks them to find out if there's truth to rumours that the local Catholic Archdiocese is covering up abuse. But he's unaware that the church controls the city, and the Spotlight writers (Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams and Brian d'Arcy James) quickly encounter heavy resistance from the establishment. As they persistently dig deeper, they realise that the story is exponentially bigger than anyone thought it was. Two lawyers (Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup) prove to be crucial in this process, as the team works to prove that the Cardinal (Len Cariou) has been covering up abuse for decades.

Cleverly, writer Josh Singer and writer-director Tom McCarthy never play this story for its salacious details. Instead, they focus on the people involved, which gives the film a strong sense of what's at stake here and the urgency of getting the story exactly right. It's a rare movie that can maintain this balance, gripping the audience and building suspense without ever tipping over into sensationalism. And the filmmakers bring out some strong emotional resonance in sensitive conversations between the journalists and the victims. All of this is expertly played by actors who stir in personal details without letting their characters' side-stories interfere with the larger narrative. They also resist the temptation to overplay the material, letting the facts of the case provide every gut-punch.

According to Variety, the Mad Men actress is still in contention for the part, though it may be that McAdams is edging ahead. Rachel McAdams' 'The Notebook' Audition Tape Will Give You Shivers

Rachel McAdams Ryan Gosling Nick Cassavetes

Once of the world's best-loved romance movies, The Notebook, has just turned ten, marking a decade since the then little-known actors Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were catapulted into the spotlight with their breath-taking performance and onscreen chemistry.

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks, the story charts two lovers who fall in love during the early 1940s. Local country boy Noah Calhoun and heiress Allie Hamilton embark on a romance despite a myriad of issues, including the implications of their different classes and disapproval of Allie's parents.

Gosling's role as Noah was apparently secured fairly early on but director Nick Cassavetes had an extensive hunt for a leading lady to play Allie. In a newly-released audition tape, it's clear to see why Cassavetes and Gosling knew instantly that they wanted the Mean Girls actress for the movie.

Still 'Mean Girls'? Tracking Down The Stars Of The 2004 Movie

Lindsay Lohan Rachel McAdams Lacey Chabert Amanda Seyfried

There’s been a whole lot of Mean Girls talk lately. First with news that there was potentially a Mean Girls movie in the works, although co-writer Tina Fey immediately dispelled those rumors. However, the Mean Girls musical is said to be coming along, slowly but surely, and it's got us reminiscing about the original and wondering where those Mean Girls are today?

lindsay lohan mean girls Lindsay is no longer fresh-faced Cady

It’s hard not to know where Lindsay Lohan is, or after “Lindsay’s List” was released, who she’s been there with. Lindsay played Cady Heron in the original movie and her career has been patchy since then, to say the least. While Lohan has appeared in a string of movies, including Georgia Rule, I Know Who Killed Me and Labor Pains, she hasn’t been nominated for any acting awards since 2008 and her personal life has been no more successful. Her cameo in 2 Broke Girls has been slammed by an audience member, who claims the troubled starlet couldn't remember any of her lines.   Lindsay has struggled with an array of legal issues and has been in and out of rehab for some years now. Her new self-titled reality show began on Opera’s network OWN on 9th March, only to be overshadowed by the list of her alleged conquests which surfaced soon after. The Lohan Saga continues.

Tina Fey has put a stop to all the Mean Girls sequel rumours that have been circulating lately, saying that a follow-up to the oft-quoted 2004 teen hit is out of the question. Fans are largely split between two camps: those who would love to see a sequel with Lindsay Lohan and the original crew, and those who think another film would be laboured, unnecessary and run the risk of damaging the appeal of its predecessor.

Wonder Woman Movie: Who Do You Want For The Leotard And Lasso?

Wonder Woman Jaimie Alexander Gina Carano Amber Heard Alice Eve Katy Perry Rosario Dawson Jennifer Lawrence Rachel McAdams Juno Temple Rachel Bilson Hayden Panettiere Megan Fox Allison Williams Alexandra Daddario

Following Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight' trilogy and the recent Superman epic 'Man Of Steel', there seems to be one obvious direction to go in next for DC Comics with their film franchises: a Wonder Woman movie, of course. The Amazonian knockout was first portrayed successfully by Lynda Carter in the TV series between 1975 and 1979, and it hasn't yet been put to cinema neither as a solo project for the character nor as a Justice League of America set-up. There have been all sorts of rumours flying about recently with Jaimie Alexander talking a lot about the supposed upcoming Wonder Woman movie and we've got pretty excited discussing who might be considered for the role.

So, who do we think would do the Wonder Woman costume 'justice'?

Jaimie AlexanderJaimie Alexander: The 'Thor' actress has set tongues wagging as she gushed about the character in an interview with Forbes. 'I would love for DC to put Wonder Woman in one of their upcoming flicks, either in her own movie or Batman vs. Superman, or just something even to introduce her', she said. Batman vs. Superman, hmm? Does she know something we don't? On the suggestion that she could be the one to play her, she insisted, 'I'm appreciative to the people who ask my opinion of the character, and that's been pretty amazing.' Jaimie would be perfect for the role given her portrayal of Asgardian strong-woman Sif in the 'Thor' movies, and she even bears an interesting resemblance to Lucy Lawless as 90s TV hero Xena, Warrior Princess.

About Time Review

Weak

Curtis has said he may stop making movies, and on the basis of this film you can kind of see why: he's clearly in a rut. While this romance attempts a bit of magical whimsy, it's the same collection of sassy comedy, romantic drama and sudsy sentimentality that characterised Love Actually and Notting Hill. More troubling is how it presents that same almost offensively slanted view of British society.

The magical element is time travel, as young Tim (Gleeson) learns from his father (Nighy) that the men in his family can flit back along their timelines at will, reliving past events and fixing things where needed. Tim decides this will come in handy as he looks for a wife, and indeed he uses his skill to circle round and round charming American Mary (McAdams) until they fall in love. And over the next several years, as he figures out how to make their life together as amazing as possible, he learns that there are some limitations to this gift.

As always, Curtis gives his characters a fantasy level of wealth that doesn't really make sense. We never see Tim travel back to win the lottery, but there's no other explanation for how he and Mary are able to buy a house in a posh Maida Vale street. And these characters also live in an imagined pocket of London that has no diversity at all, as we never see anyone who isn't white and straight. But then, Tim's idyllic childhood on the Cornish coast isn't exactly believable either, complete with a quirky earth-adoring sister (Wilson) and always-confused uncle (Cordery).

'Passion' Reviews: Brian De Palma, Is That Really You?

Brian De Palma Rachel McAdams Noomi Rapace

Brian De Palma, a man once considered the finest director on the planet having helmed The Untouchables and Scarface, returns this week with Passion - a thriller based on the 2010 French movie Love Crime.

It stars Rachel McAdams and the ultra-talented Noomi Rapace and follows the story of a deadly power struggle between two women in the dog-eat-dog world of international business. Or at least that's what the promotional bumf says: essentially, McAdams plays a Berlin-based advertising executive who engages in a power struggle with her assistant Isabelle, who attempts to further her career.

Passion - De Palma's first movie since his war movie Redacted in 2007 - was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival, but it won't win.

Just head somewhere quiet, focus on a dark memory then...pop! Rather than use the skill for earthly good Tim decides his first mission will be to get a girlfriend. The object of his affection, in true Four Weddings/Notting Hill Curtis style is the smiling, confident American to contrast with Tim's bumbling ways (à la Hugh Grant).

Rachel McAdams Joins Cameron Crowe Movie: Is It The New 'Jerry Maguire'?

Rachel McAdams Cameron Crowe Bradley Cooper Emma Stone

Rachel McAdams is in negotiations to join Cameron Crowe's still untitled movie, about a military contractor on a top-secret mission in Hawaii. Bradley Cooper plays the contractor who is teamed with an Air Force pilot, played by Emma Stone. According to Deadline, the film tonally falls somewhere between "Almost Famous" and "Jerry Maguire."

McAdams has signed on for an interesting year - she stars in Terrence Malik's new movie To The Wonder, which looks bizarre, and will feature alongside Noomi Rapace in Brian De Palma's B-movie 'Passion'. Oh, and there's also Anton Corbijn's thriller A Most Wanted Man, which should land on the festival circuit this year. One thing's for sure, McAdams has told her agent that she wants to make arthouse movies.

Cameron Crowe is working with producer Scott Rudin on the new film, which they are making with Sony Pictures. Crowe wrote the script himself and is looking to start principal photography at the beginning of October. The movie should be out midway through 2014, all ready for awards season. By the time it hits theaters, three years will have passed since Crowe's last directorial out, 'We Bought A Zoo'. That movie starred Matt Damon as a father who moves his young family to the countryside to renovate and re-open a struggling zoo, with the help of one Ms Scarlett Johansson. It garnered mixed reviews from critics.

Rachel McAdams Split From Michael Sheen; But Is It Just Temporary?

Rachel McAdams Michael Sheen

It seems to be the season of the celebrity split, with first news that Michelle Williams and Jason Segel have gone their separate ways, and now Rachel McAdams and Michael Sheen also splitting up.

It’s believed that the constant travel has caused the two to break up, though in a previous interview with Stella Magazine she’d said: "Michael and I never spend more than three weeks apart - we rack up a lot of air miles - but you have to be quite adaptable in this business whether you are in a relationship or not.” In fact, it seems quite a shame that this one has gone down the plughole, with the pair seemingly pretty happy. In the same interview, McAdams had said "Michael and I didn't get together while we were filming Midnight in Paris, which I feel strongly about not doing when I'm working. We became quite good friends, which I think is a great way to start. I felt very blessed to have made a Woody Allen film in Paris together."

Very Good

Frankly, a bad Terrence Malick film is better than 90 percent of movies released in cinemas: but if you thought The Tree of Life was indulgent and overly kaleidoscopic, you should avoid this like the plague. Because this film is even looser and more internalised, taking an impressionistic approach to plot and characters that gives us very few specifics. It also leaves the cast to play mere hints of people who are having crises of faith and love.

After a lushly romantic trip to Paris and Mont Saint-Michel, Neil (Affleck) brings his French girlfriend Marina (Kurylenko) and her 10-year-old daughter Tatiana (Chiline) home to Oklahoma to live. The geography and culture are a shock to both of them, but Marina tells Neil, "If you love me, I'm OK here." So they begin to bond as a family, and Marina turns to local Catholic priest Quintana (Bardem) for support. But he's having a crisis of faith, and she's wondering if she's made a terrible mistake. So when her visa expires, she takes Tatiana and returns to France. In confusion, Neil then turns to his old flame Jane (McAdams). But as their rekindled romance begins to get serious, she realises that he's still in love with Marina.

Malick tells this story with snippets of ideas and feelings. Emmanuel Lubezki's sumptuous cinematography finds raw beauty everywhere, including in Malick's trademark sun-dappled leaves, waving wheat fields and rippling water. But there's also raw beauty in the actors' faces, and we understand their thoughts through breathy voiceovers that offer philosophical musings and biblical texts. As a result, only Marina emerges as a properly defined character with passion and yearnings; everyone else is sketchy and vague. Even Affleck and Bardem, who have strong on-screen presence, never quite register here.

Could Anna Kendrick Play Princess Leia In Star Wars Episode 7?

Anna Kendrick Mila Kunis Star Wars Rachel McAdams

The Jedis have spoken, and it's Anna Kendrick who they want as Princess Leia in Star Wars Episode 7, the first of the movies in the new Disney franchise. The film should hit theaters in 2015 and all eyes are turning to the forthcoming casting process to see who will snag the major roles.

It's likely that all the parts will be up for grabs, with Disney looking to provide a new take on the franchise - a new era. In a poll run by E! Online, fans weighed in on who they'd like to see take up the role of Princess Leia, the twin sister of Luke Skywalker. Mila Kunis, Anne Hathaway, Rachel McAdams and The Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence all scored admirably, though there was one overall winner: Anna Kendrick. We're guessing it may have something to do with Kendrick's likeness to previous Leia actress Carrie Fisher. Oscar nominated Kendrick rose to prominence in the Twilight films, though won acclaim for her turns in the George Clooney-starring Up In The Air and comedy 50/50, with Seth Rogen. Her schedule looks pretty clear for the next couple of years, though she's set to begin work on comedy-drama Drinking Buddies, set for a 2013 release.

A weekend poll on Broadway.com saw Aaron Tveit the clear choice to play Luke Skywalker in the new movies. The Ghost Town actor took a stonking 25% of the vote.

The Vow Review

OK
Inspired by a true story, this film is watchable mainly because of the extraordinary events, which are genuinely involving and moving. Although typically, Hollywood has ramped up the emotions while avoiding subtlety at all costs.

Goofy recording engineer Leo (Tatum) and adorable artist Paige (McAdams) had a cute romance, quirky wedding and four happy years together before a car crash changed everything. Leo only has minor injuries, but Paige has lost some five years of memories. Crucially, she has no idea who Leo is. And she doesn't remember turning her back on her law course, smirking fiance (Speedman) and wealthy parents (Lange and Neill). They're all she remembers now, so Leo tries to remind her of who she became after she left them behind. If they'll let him.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows Review

Good

Ritchie, Downey and Law are back with another manic romp that feels more like a Victorian James Bond adventure than anything about the famed Conan Doyle characters. While it has the same comical energy, it's not quite as fun as the first go-round.

Brilliant Cambridge professor Moriarty (Harris) is up to no good, taking on Holmes (Downey) by messing with those around him, including his girlfriend-nemesis Irene (McAdams) and his partner Watson (Law), who plans to retire after his upcoming wedding to Mary (Reilly). But nothing goes as planned, and Holmes and Watson are propelled into a vicious game of intrigue that sends them to Paris where they team up with a sexy gypsy (Rapace). They also get help from Holmes' brother Mycroft (Fry) as they head to a climactic showdown in Switzerland.

Who needs logic when the action is this wildly exhilarating? And much of it is drastically slowed-down so Ritchie can show us Holmes' powers of deduction as well as whizzing bullets, explosions and other cool-looking things. The dialog is the same mix of faux intelligent banter and shameless innuendo, which gives the actors something to play with, especially as Downey and Law amusingly move beyond bromance into Brokeback territory.

But we do need some logic. This plot is so messy that it never engages us. And as it builds to a climax in a crazy cliff-perched Alpine castle, we begin to lose interest. Even with the bigger action, zingy dialog and colourful characters, this film barely works up any steam. Whenever Holmes isn't being mischievous, Downey actually looks bored. And Rapace is so sidelined that it's difficult to understand why she's here at all; the filmmakers never give her anything interesting to do.

It's a shame the screenwriters never push the characters further. But at least Ritchie keeps things moving briskly, filling the screen with comical nuttiness and big-gun mayhem. Even if Moriarty makes no sense (would someone this intelligent resort to such a ridiculous plan to make his fortune?), Harris adds heft in the role, including some jagged chemistry with Downey. Let's just hope that the requisite third film lets us in on the joke.

Midnight In Paris Review

Excellent
After a run of loose, uneven films, Allen hits the right notes in this funny, astute comedy about artistic creation and personal dreams. And Wilson turns out to be one of the best on-screen Allen surrogates in years.

Blocked writer Gil (Wilson) is visiting Paris with his wife Inez (McAdams) and her high-achieving parents (Fuller and Kennedy). When they run into Inez's know-it-all ex (Sheen), Gil starts having second thoughts about everything. He also begins to wish he'd lived in Paris in the artistic heyday of the 1920s, and is stunned one night to find himself in some kind of magical time-warp, rubbing shoulders with F Scott Fitzgerald (Hiddleston), Gertrude Stein (Bates) and Ernest Hemmingway (Stoll). He also begins to fall for Adriana (Cotillard), a muse for Picasso and Modigliani.

Wedding Crashers Review

Good
About 20 minutes before the credits roll in "WeddingCrashers," something goes very wrong. It feels as if a drunken scriptdoctor stumbled into the party, demanded to know where all the clicheshad gone and insisted they be put right back where they belong.

Soon there are interrupted weddings, "I tried to tellyou but couldn't" apologies and an avalanche of other plot machinationsthat come close to ruining what is otherwise the bawdiest, most consistentlyhilarious comedy so far this year.

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson have an ad-lib-happy, almostHope-and-Crosby-like chemistry as a pair of buddies -- ironically talenteddivorce mediators by profession -- who spend their free time attendingweddings of people they don't know to score with girls they'll never seeagain. Almost the entire first reel of the movie is something akin to afilmmaking miracle -- one long, perfectly-tuned montage sequence of variousethnic weddings that just keeps getting funnier and funnier as it mixestoasts, dances, flirtations, made-up war stories, fake tears, and prettygirls caught up in the romance of the day and jumping our heroes' bones.

Story proper kicks in when the boys dare to crash "theKentucky Derby of weddings" -- the Secretary of State's eldest daughteris getting hitched -- and Wilson lays eyes on the middle daughter (talented,bright-eyed Everygirl knockout Rachel McAdams) as she's quietly snickeringthrough her sister's corny self-written vows.

The Hot Chick Review

Bad

Rob Schneider's new low-brow body-swap romp "The Hot Chick" is such an insipidly sexist so-called comedy that the movie's entire female cast is reduced to jumping up and down, giggling and playing patty-cake while rhyming about the ickiness of sex.

These characters don't have a brain cell to share among them, but Schneider (who plays an idiot too, but what else is new?) and director Tom Brady genuinely expect the audience to identify with these one-dimensional teenage airheads.

More specifically, they expect us to identify with catty queen ditz Jessica (Rachel McAdams), who, through a curse not worth explaining here, wakes up in the short, hairy, burlap-sack body of a scummy, gas-station-robbing low-life (Schneider) just a few days before the prom.
