Randy Quaid And His Wife Arrested At Canada-US Border

Randy and Evi Quaid were arrested trying to enter the U.S. in Vermont by officials, and were placed in separate detention centers.
Actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi have been arrested while attempting to cross the border from Canada into the United States, a matter of days before Quaid’s deportation back to the States, new reports indicate.
U.S. Custom and Border Protection officials detained the Quaids at the border in Vermont on Friday evening (October 9th) at approximately 8pm local time, determining them to be “fugitives from justice” in California, where they are wanted for questioning in connection with a long-standing felony vandalism case, according to Vermont State Police.
Officials soon decided to extradite the pair, and they were taken to separate detention centers in Vermont where their bails were set at $500,000 each.

The vandalism case in question dates back to 2010 when Randy, former Independence Day, Brokeback Mountain and Kingpin star, and his wife were accused of squatting in a property they once owned in Santa Barbara, California, causing $5,000 worth of damage in the process.
The Quaids soon fled to Canada claiming persecution, whereupon Evi was granted citizenship but her husband was not. Randy’s bid to gain similar status to his wife was denied in 2012, and he’s been fighting to gain citizenship ever since. The 65 year old said as recently as Wednesday (October 7th) in an interview with the Associated Press from a detention center in Laval, Quebec, that he wanted to “move on with my life” and put the California charges behind him as soon as possible.
He had been placed in the detention center by Canadian officials because they did not believe that Quaid would voluntarily comply with the deportation order, effective October 14th, but was released on Thursday following a brief hearing.
The deportation process can often take years from the decision being made to it being finalised. Quaid was also arrested in Montreal back in May this year when he stopped checking in with border authorities as per the terms of his temporary visa.
As of the time of writing, no statements have been made by representatives for the Quaids.
