Blind music legend Ray Charles has died at his Beverly Hills home. He was 73.

The GEORGIA ON MY MIND crooner passed away from complications of liver disease this morning (10JUN04), surrounded by family members.

The 12-time Grammy winner, who was rendered blind by a childhood illness, was famous for dabbling with all kinds of musical genres, from country and blues to soul and jazz.

Charles, who excelled as a pianist and saxophonist - as well as a standards singer - was forced to cancel an American tour last year (03) after having his hip replaced.

His last public appearance was in April (04) when the city of Los Angeles designated the singer's studios as a historic landmark.
