The 58-year-old actor is currently appearing as promotions executive Zak Yankovich in record label drama Vinyl. Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger were among the creators of the show, and it's full of sex, drugs and rock and roll - a far cry from the work Everybody Loves Raymond star Ray is used to.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night (08Mar16), Ray revealed he has only ever shot one sex scene before - and it didn't exactly go to plan.

"I did the show Men of a Certain Age and that was a drama comedy," he said. "My character was one who was married for 20 years, now divorced, going out on his first date and he's worried it's going to end up in sex and things are going to happen too fast , if you know what I mean. So we do the scene, it calls for sex to happen, and for me to push her off me because things are going too fast, and run into the bathroom with my pants around my ankles yelling 'Leg cramp!'

"So I'm nervous just to do the scene. We do the scene, I push her off, I run into the bathroom, yelling 'Leg cramp, leg cramp!' My pants are round my ankles. The director yells 'Cut', I look down and pull my pants up. I look down and there's a gooey liquid all around the crotch and I'm like (what?) Because I would know (if anything had happened)! And what happened was that my the Purell (hand sanitizer) in my pocket had exploded when I was running!

"So I had to take the trousers off, wardrobe had to blow dry them, but I had to go round and show every crew member (the bottle) to prove that was what happened."

An upcoming episode of Vinyl will see Ray's character have a threesome in Las Vegas. While he was slightly more equipped to deal with such a scene given his Men of a Certain Age past, he still found the experience "very stressful".

"It was very stressful," he said. "It's fun and then there's… it's not fun because you worry, don't let it be too much fun if you know what I'm saying. You don't want them to have to green screen your crotch out!"
