Rihanna has won a court battle against high-street fashion store Topshop. The case has been on-going for a year and was filed due to Topshop using an image of the singer on a t-shirt without her permission. This image, Rihanna's representatives argued, encouraged consumers to purchase the product believing it had been endorsed by the singer.
Rihanna has won a court battle against Topshop. The high-street fashion store sold t-shirts with Rhianna's image, the singer filed a suit accusing the shop of selling the product by presenting, falsely, that it was endorsed by the singer.
Rihanna leaving Roberto Cavalli in London.
A source speaking earlier this month, as reported in The Telegraph, said Rhianna had requested on a number of occasions that the store withdraw its product.
The 25-year-old singer has been involved in the legal dispute with the clothing store for over a year. The ruling was made yesterday (Wednesday 31st) by Judge Birss speaking at the High Court in London. Topshop attempted to "robustly" dispute the claim but Judge Birss ruled in the singer's favour. He said a "substantial number" of customers had bought the t-shirt under the "false belief" that the 'Rhianna tank' had been endorsed by the singer. He continued, rather bizarrely, to say her "goodwill" and reputation in the "fashion sphere" may have been damaged.
In response to the ruling, Topshop said they were "surprised and disappointed by the judgement." They continued by commenting on their relationship with Rhianna: "We feel that the fact that Rihanna has shopped, worn and had a relationship with Topshop for several years appears to have been detrimental to our case."
The ruling may have been made yesterday, yet Topshop are not willing to take Judge Birss' decision lying down. Their spokesperson said they "are considering all options available to us including seeking appeal."
Judge Birss has yet to reveal details on damages or other compensation for the singer.
