Rik Mayall suffered an "acute cardiac event" after returning home from his morning run, according to his wife. Barbara Robbin spoke to the press, including the Telegraph, after a post mortem examination into the comic's death proved inconclusive.

The 56-year-old comedy hero died suddenly on Monday (June 9, 2014) and Mrs Robbin suggested that an epileptic fit could have been a possible cause of death.

"We don't know yet what happened. He had a strong heart, so I don't think it was a heart attack. But we just don't know until the coroner's report."

On Thursday a spokesman for West London Coroner's Court said: "The post mortem was done this morning. The tests have proved inconclusive therefore tests are ongoing."

Earlier this week Nico Richardson, a family friend and son of the director Peter Richardson, explained how Mayall had helped him with his own epilepsy. His older brother had spoken to Mayall on the morning of his death.

"Rik was happy, chatting away," Mr Richardson said. "All I know is that my brother got a funny joke from Rik before he left for work, then he left and about an hour or two later he found out that he had died."

The news comes as it emerged that Mayall could top the UK Singles Chart this week after an online campaign to get his football song Noble England was spearheaded by English fans. Sales of the song - which didn't chart the first time around - had skyrocketed to send it to No.38 as of Wednesday.
