Australian actor Robert Hughes has been convicted of sexually abusing young girls.

The former Hey Dad! star was found guilty of nine charges, including two counts of sexual assault and seven counts of indecent assault, stemming from attacks on youngsters aged between six and 15 between 1985 and 1990.

The jury at Sydney's Downing Centre District Court returned guilty verdicts on nine charges on Monday (07Apr14).

They are to continue deliberating two further charges of committing an indecent act, which the 65-year-old star denies.

After the guilty verdicts were read out in court, Hughes was seen shaking his head and crying before standing up and yelling, "I am innocent."

Sentencing will take place at a later date. The jury's deliberations will continue on Tuesday (08Apr14).

The guilty verdicts come more than a year after Hughes was extradited back to his native Australia from Britain to face trial.
