Robert Pattinson Sees Parallels In Life

Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson takes on one of his most complex roles in Life, based on the real-life encounter between photographer Dennis Stock and actor James Dean in 1955. And he's been getting some of his best reviews yet.

Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan in 'Life'Robert Pattinson saw the other side of the camera in 'Life'

Intriguingly, Pattinson approached the story from a slightly different angle than the film's director, celebrity photographer Anton Corbijn. "Anton really thinks of it as a film about a photographer and photography," Pattinson says. "I've never been that interested in photography, but for me the whole thing was about the son. It's very rare to see a parent who doesn't love their kid. I thought that was fascinating. It's not like he doesn't care; it destroys him, but he's incapable of the empathy needed to love his child. He can't. He's just too obsessed with himself."

Life Review

Good

Beautifully written and directed, this fact-based drama is an odd mixture of excellent acting and not-quite-right casting. Anton Corbijn clearly knows the subject, since he's a celebrity photographer making a movie about a celebrity photographer. But in this case, the subject of those photos is the elusively magnetic James Dean, a tricky person to recreate dramatically.

It's set in early 1955, as James Dean (Dane DeHaan) has just finished filming East of Eden and is hoping to land the lead role in Rebel Without a Cause. No one knows who he is yet, but freelance photographer Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson) has a feeling he could become a big star. When Dennis' agent (Joel Edgerton) lands a commission from Life magazine, Dennis follows James from Hollywood to New York and home to his Indiana farm. But James is evasive and mercurial, and it takes a lot of tenacity for Dennis to crack through his shell to get the shots he needs. Eventually they even become friends, inspiring each other to pursue their dreams on their own terms.

The plot is loose, focussing more on the internal journeys these two men take than on any constructed storyline. And the film switches back and forth between their perspectives, which kind of leaves it without a point of view. But this gives both Pattinson and DeHaan the space to create authentic and complex characters. Pattinson gives his most layered performance yet, especially in scenes involving Dennis' ex-wife and young son (Stella Schnabel and Jack Fulton). Meanwhile, DeHaan creates a character who's thoughtful and fascinating, haunted by his past relationships and unafraid to stand up to the Hollywood system in the form of mogul Jack Warner (a scene-chewing Ben Kingsley). The problem is that, despite a lot of subtle (and more obvious) physical touches, DeHaan never echoes Dean's wiry, hungry energy.

James Dean is a rising superstar; handsome, slick, smart and mild-mannered, and yet rebellious with dreams of being a famous actor. For passionate Life Magazine photographer Dennis Stock, Dean poses the perfect subject for his latest project and he's determined to capture the star in all his glory ahead of the release of his break-out movie 'Easy Of Eden'. It takes little persuasion on Stock's part to get Dean to agree to the project and the pair set out on a journey from Hollywood, through New York, and over to Fairmont, Indiana where Dean was originally from. Stock's plan is to capture the raw emotion and energy of this iconic figure of angst and coolness, and it doesn't take long before the two start to build an extraordinary friendship, that's made all the more heart-breaking on screen when you consider it's the final months of his life.

FKA Twigs And Robert Pattinson Wedding Pushed Back

Robert Pattinson FKA Twigs

Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs have enjoyed a whirlwind romance since meeting less than a year ago, but it seems that they’re putting the brakes on a bit with reports that they’re postponing their upcoming marriage until the autumn.

A source close to the British couple has told People that the delay is down to 28 year old Twigs being unable to decide about whether to have a “low-key” or an “elaborate” wedding, rather than any signs of cold feet from either of them.

Jesse Eisenberg apparently didn’t enjoy being at Comic-Con, likening his experience at the massive convention to “some kind of genocide”. We know the crowds can be a little forceful, but seriously?

Giving a reaction to this year’s annual sci-fi and comic fest to the Associated Press on Monday (July 13th), the actor made the somewhat questionable remarks. “It is like being screamed at by thousands of people,” he reflected, “I don’t know what the experience is throughout history, probably some kind of genocide. I can’t think of anything that’s equivalent.”

Maps To The Stars Review

Excellent

As it explores Hollywood's inbred underbelly, this film becomes increasingly deranged and also rather dark and creepy, but it's so fiercely entertaining that it's impossible to look away from the screen. With razor-sharp performances, a brutally witty script by Bruce Wagner and snaky direction from David Cronenberg, the film is perhaps too knowing as it explores a group of fiercely ambitious people who will stop at nothing to get what they want.

Things kick off as Agatha (Mia Wasikowska) arrives in Los Angeles and is collected by chauffeur Jerome (Robert Pattinson), who is also of course an aspiring screenwriter and actor. Focussed and determined, Agatha visits the ruins of a Hollywood Hills home before using a friendship with Carrie Fisher to get a job as an assistant to acclaimed actress Havana Segrand (Julianne Moore). Facing middle age, Havana is desperate for a comeback role in a remake of the movie that made her mother a star. Meanwhile, 13-year-old teen pin-up Benjie (Evan Bird) has completed rehab and is ready to act again, encouraged by his manager mother (Olivia Williams) and self-help guru dad (John Cusack), who are unnerved when they hear that Agatha is back in town. Clearly everyone has a secret that can jeopardise their career paths. And they're connected in ways no one wants to acknowledge.

The knotted mess of the plot is carefully unpicked over the course of the film, which only makes everything that much more intense and nasty. While it's blackly funny, the movie's overall tone is extremely grim, as these wealthy stars are crippled by emptiness and desperation. They're also willing to do just about anything to get ahead, from celebrating someone else's misfortune to blatantly lying about their pasts.

The Rover Stretches Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson

British actor Robert Pattinson was just 22 when he landed the role as Edward Cullen in Twilight, and he instantly became a global pin-up, named "the most handsome man in the world" by Vanity Fair and one of the "100 most influential people" by Time.

The Rover

He's 28 now and determined to prove himself as a serious actor, moving on from straightforward leading-man roles (Water for Elephants) to edgier fare by arthouse filmmakers like David Cronenberg (Cosmopolis and this year's Maps to the Stars), Werner Herzog (the forthcoming Queen of the Desert alongside Nicole Kidman), Anton Corbijn, Olivier Assayas and James Marsh.

The Rover Review

Good

While this atmospheric Australian Outback thriller has plenty of edgy action, it's also meandering and arty, refusing to fill in the details until filmmaker David Michod is good and ready. This makes it feel rather slow and uneven, although it's at least consistently fascinating. And as a story of tenacity and survival, it's also a gripping drama.

The story is set 10 years after "the collapse", so there's little sense of law and order in the Outback. When his car is stolen by three outlaws (Scoot McNairy, Tawanda Manyimo and David Field), the strong-silent Eric (Guy Pearce) goes in pursuit. Along the way, he picks up the injured Rey (Robert Pattinson), brother of one of the thugs, who knows where they're headed. As they hit the road, Eric and Rey have a series of encounters with people who are alternatively helpful and menacing, from an inquisitive brothel madam (Gillian Jones) to a nervous doctor (Susan Prior) to an in-over-his-head soldier (Anthony Hayes). There are also plenty of marauding thieves and trigger-happy commandoes who don't hesitate before blowing away anyone who looks odd. But as Eric and Rey begin to bond, they still find it impossible to trust each other.

While the overarching plot is fairly simple, the film plays out in a series of set-pieces as Eric responds a variety of tense situations. The big question hovering above everything is of course why he's so determined to get his car back (the odd answer comes at the very end). Michod's style of filmmaking is more interested in provoking thought than fully satisfying the audience, so scenes are packed with inconclusive twists and turns, vaguely undefined characters and situations, and elements that clearly have some sort of meaning but feel rather impenetrable. Pearce's performance fits this style perfectly; Eric is a man who says very little, letting a steely glare convey more than any number of words would. In jarring contrast, Pattinson's Rey is a hyperactive mess, a simple-minded guy who never stops moving and talking.
