The Oscar winner teams up with fellow Hollywood star Nick Nolte in the upcoming comedy adventure film, which is based on author Bill Bryson's 1998 book of the same name.

Redford first began eyeing a movie adaptation at the start of the century and wanted to re-team onscreen with his The Sting co-star Paul Newman, but he turned to Nolte when his ailing friend insisted he would not be well enough for the shoot.

Newman tells ABC7 Eyewitness News, "It was a passion that I had to see this story brought to the screen, I thought, (it) would be a wonderful thing... By the time this thing came about, the age difference (with Newman) was a factor - 14 years between Paul and I - and also the fact that his physical health was in decline. So he was the one that said, 'I think it'd be too much to get out here and do this.' So the moment that happened, it went right to Nick."

A Walk in the Woods is due to open in the U.S. on Wednesday (02Sep15).
