The musician passed away in the capital Dakar on Wednesday morning (18Aug15) after falling sick with an undisclosed illness, according to his family.

Rose was not only a well-known drummer in his native Senegal, but he also toured the world and worked with artists including the Rolling Stones, Miles Davis, Josephine Baker, Dizzy Gillespie and Peter Gabriel.

Just last month (Jul15), his orchestra, the Drummers of West Africa, paid tribute to him at a festival in his honour.

He was previously named a living human treasure by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2006.
