Kasabian Receive Eight NME Awards Nominations

Kasabian Royal Blood Jamie T NME

As if we didn’t know it already, it’s been a very good year for Kasabian. In addition to a chart-topping album and a headline performance at Glastonbury, the group have been nominated for an impressive eight NME Awards.

The Leicester-based band have become arguably the biggest alternative rock band in Britain over the last decade, and this status is reflected by this massive haul of nominations. The band are in the running for: Best Band; Best Live Band; Best Track and Dance Floor Filler (both for lead single ‘Eez-Eh’); Best Music Film (Kasabian: Summer Solstice); ‘Music Moment of the Year’ (for their Glastonbury performance); Best Fan Community and, perhaps most importantly, Best Album for their fifth record 48:13 which was released back in June.

Our Guide To This Year's Mercury Music Prize Nominations

The 24th edition of the annual Barclaycard Mercury Prize is due to be held on Wednesday 29th October at London’s Roundhouse.

Last week we brought you our analysis of who we thought would make the dozen-strong shortlist from which the judges will pick the eventual winner. We got five out of the twelve correct, not bad as many pundits have expressed surprise at the relative obscurity of this year’s list in comparison to previous awards.

Only two of the nominated albums have reached the Number 1 spot in the UK Albums Chart, and only one nominee can realistically call himself a household name. There has also been a surprising snub for Sam Smith, who has made a huge impression on the British public’s imagination, with his debut album In The Lonely Hour sitting at the top the charts four months after its release.

Royal Blood - Royal Blood Album Review

Both a blessing and a curse, Royal Blood have been subject to almost hysterical levels of hype. It started when Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders wore their T-shirt during a 2013 Glastonbury headline slot while the Brighton two-piece still were in their infancy. It built when, after initially placing the band on the sound of 2014 list, Radio 1 granted singles 'Little Monster' and 'Come On Over' considerable airtime on daytime radio. Festival appearances at both Glastonbury and the Reading and Leeds Festivals followed and saw 15,000 capacity tents overflowing with music fans desperate to catch a glimpse of a band that was quickly becoming the hottest name in British rock.  Then, latest single 'Figure it Out' hit the Radio One A list and Royal Blood dropped their debut.

Royal Blood - Royal Blood Album Review

Hype surrounding the band had already hit fever pitch. When their self-titled debut hit number one, selling 66,000 copies in its first week, the biggest first week sales of any rock debut since Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds in 2011, the band truly burst into the stratosphere. If that wasn't enough, the band's first UK tour sold out in two minutes flat and this week the band's debut was nominated for the Mercury Prize.

No too much for the fledgling band's debut to live up to then.

Royal Blood - Come On Over Single Review

Royal Blood are fast movers. Having formed just last year, they have only one EP out so far, 'Out Of The Black', and the duo are already making a name for themselves, achieving things that many new bands can only dream of. Their previous single 'Little Monster' became an instant hit, they are due to support the Arctic Monkeys at Finsbury Park this month and they're being booked to play massive summer festivals such as Download and Glastonbury this year.

Royal Blood - Come On Over Single Review

'Come On Over' starts with a gritty bassline, bassist/vocalist Mike Karr's fingers quickly moving up and down the fretboard, before Ben Thatcher's hard-hitting drums come in and increase the strength of the song. There's a quiet/loud dynamic to the track, with the brooding vocals in the verses going alongside a sluggish bassline, before the vocals roar and the bass crunches for the chorus. They have such a huge and complete sound for a band that's just bass, drums and vocals that you wouldn't even know that they're without a guitar unless you researched them. Kerr sings lyrics that have a playful attitude to them, such as, 'Well, there's no God and I don't really care' and 'I ran away to make you care'. These lyrics are sung in a great hard rock manner, with Kerr's muddy vocals going along in the same vein as other modern rock singers such as Josh Home of Queens Of The Stone Age.

'Come On Over' shows Royal Blood doing what they do best: making fun and catchy hard rock music. If you're a fan of their other songs, or rock music in general, you're bound to like this.
