Darren Aronofsky is facing a strange few months. His film, Noah, which stars Russell Crowe and Emma Watson (that’s not the weird bit) was put in front of Christian and Jewish test audiences, only for them to oppose the film because it diverges from the biblical telling of the story.

When you break it down, this is - quite simply - fans of a book complaining the big screen adaptation isn’t true to what the author was trying to say. And it’s not like we haven’t seen that before. Problem is, Christianity and Judaism can’t really be boiled down to a ‘set of fans’ – there’s all this culture, art, food and years of persecution to think about.

So we’re basically back to square one. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that the Christian and Jewish audiences that flagged up Noah as being divergent from the gospel aren’t really living in the real world. There wasn’t ever a massive flood, and two of every animal didn’t get on a boat made by a man called Noah. Didn’t happen.

And if someone scribbling away in a book called The Bible can make a story up – and it’s a really good story – then why can’t Darren Aronofsky have a go at re-telling it in his own way? Mr. Aronofsky has already proved he’s a good storyteller. The terrifying Black Swan earned his star Natalie Portman an Oscar, while the film grabbed $329m worldwide.

All this negative press towards his latest movie has lead to an argument, according to The Hollywood Reporter, between him and his studio, Paramount. They’re arguing that the opposition from both Christians and Jews means the final cut has to change.

You have to please the masses Darren!

Darren doesn’t want to do that though; he wants to put out the film he spent years making. And it wasn’t exactly an easy film to make. Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore says the film is going through a "normal preview process" and the result will be "one version of the movie that Darren is overseeing." Sounds like management speak Darren and we know you hate that.

Have a nice weekend.
