Ryan Reynolds On How He And Blake Lively Are Coping At Parenthood Without A Nanny

Ryan Reynolds Blake Lively

First time father Ryan Reynolds has been talking about how surprised he is that he and his wife Blake Lively have been dealing with parenthood without the help of a nanny. In a new interview with GQ magazine, the Self/Less star has spoken about his “weirdly endless supply of patience” at night-time baby duties.

It’s been nine months since he and his wife welcomed their daughter James into the world, but the gruelling regime of night-time feedings hasn’t gotten the better of him yet. “I have no problem waking up five times in the middle of the night and changing diapers, and as exhausted as you get, I have this stupid grin on my face all the time,” he said.

Self/Less And Deadpool Make Ryan Reynolds Ponder Immortality

Ryan Reynolds Ben Kingsley

As a new father, Ryan Reynolds has been re-evaluating his career even as he continues to make movies at a rather brisk pace. He has three films out this year and two more in the can. His latest release is Tarsem Singh's Self/Less, a thriller with a sci-fi twist that involves Ben Kingsley's character implanting his consciousness into Reynolds' younger, fitter body.

Ryan Reynolds in Self/LessRyan Reynolds' latest movie venture is this sci-fi thriller 'Self/Less'

"I think I'm in a unique position," Reynolds says, "in the fact that I get to star in dramas, comedies and suspense and action films. As I've gotten older, my career has become centred on working with people I would like to collaborate with."

Self/Less Review

OK

An intriguing premise keeps the audience gripped for about 20 minutes before the movie runs out of steam. Which is far too early. Despite the always-engaging presence of Ryan Reynolds, this fantastical thriller is slick enough to hold the attention, but fails because it's unable to generate any interest in the central characters. And instead of exploring the fascinating issues the story raises, the filmmakers instead fall back on irrelevant violence.

The story opens as billionaire Manhattan businessman Damien (Ben Kingsley) discovers he has six months to live. But he has heard about a new medical procedure called "shedding", in which his mind is implanted in a lab-grown body. At $250 million, it seems like a bargain, so he signs up with Dr Allbright (Matthew Goode) and prepares to abandon his old life for a new one. He wakes up in New Orleans as Edward (Reynolds), and begins to adjust to his fit new 35-year-old body. But after he misses his adjustment meds one day he has a series of bewildering flashbacks that make him wonder about the true nature of the shedding process. Maybe his new body wasn't so "new" after all. So he goes looking for answers, which involves teaming up with Madeline (Natalie Martinez) and seeking help from his business partner Martin (Victor Garber).

There are all kinds of intriguing themes swirling through this set-up, including issues of identity and mortality. But writers David and Alex Pastor seem uninterested in exploring any of this in lieu of a much more simplistic morality tale packed with continual shoot-out and chase scenes, plus far too much body-swapping. All of this is produced to a very high standard by director Tarsem Singh, who has a reputation for seriously stylish cinema (see The Fall or The Cell). He adds a strong edge to every scene, with intriguingly haunting editing choices and camerawork that add plenty of tension and uncertainty even if the plot itself is utterly predictable.

Woman In Gold Review

Very Good

This fascinating true story is strong enough to hold up against the formulaic Hollywood treatment, boosted by another riveting performance from Helen Mirren. She adds some badly needed prickly humour to the film, which continually resorts to unsophisticated sentimentality as it traces a remarkable series of real events. And it helps that the story has some intriguing things to say about both art and history.

It opens in 1998 Los Angeles, where Maria Altmann (Mirren) has discovered some documents in her late sister's belongings that refer to a beloved portrait of their Aunt Adele (Antje Traue in flashbacks). The problem is that the painting is Gustav Klimt's Woman in Gold, which is regarded as the "Mona Lisa of Austria" and held in pride of place in the national gallery. Since Austria has begun restoring art stolen from its citizens by the Nazis, Maria hires novice family-friend lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), who quickly realises the futility of the case. But they travel to Vienna to begin the process, getting some help navigating the system from local journalist Hubertus (Daniel Bruhl). Sure enough, the Austrian government fights Maria at every step of the way.

The compelling argument in this film is that if Austria acknowledges that this national treasure was stolen, it implicates the government and the population in complicity with the Nazis. And that's something no one is willing to do. There's also of course the issue of greed, since Woman in Gold is worth $100 million. But Maria's simple question is why the painting's value or status matter when its true ownership is so clear. Director Simon Curtis and writer Alexi Kaye Campbell wisely dash through the series of hearings, court cases and appeals, while emphasising this undeniable fact of the case. Although this also simplifies most scenes into little more than "Nazis bad, Jews good". While the flashbacks to Maria's past are moving and informative, Randy's sideplots feel irrelevant and undercooked, featuring his pregnant wife (Katie Holmes) and sardonic boss (Charles Dance).

The Voices Review

Excellent

Utterly bonkers, this movie confounds any attempt to categorise it, blending comedy, romance, horror and drama to become a true one-off. And it maintains such a darkly playful tone that it's impossible not to smile even as things turn rather hideously nasty. Against all odds, these contradicting moods come together into something surprisingly involving, thanks to skilled director Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) and clever writer Michael R. Perry. Their approach is so inventive that it's impossible to guess what might happen next.

Set in a small industrial town, the story centres on Jerry (Ryan Reynolds), who was set up with a job in a bathtub factory after his release from a psychiatric institute. Overseen by therapist (Jacki Weaver), Jerry is settling in nicely. He has a crush on Fiona (Gemma Arterton) in accounting, even though it's actually her office colleague Lisa (Anna Kendrick) who likes him. But no one realises that he has gone off his meds and is starting to listen to advice coming from his lovable dog Bosco and his evil cat Mr Whiskers. What they tell him to do is pretty horrific, but he thinks that this is the only way to get his life back on track.

Where the plot goes is seriously grisly, but it's played out by the cast and filmmakers in a blackly comical way that's highly stylised, seeing everything through Jerry's warped perspective. The question is whether he's a serial killer, an insane criminal or an emotionally tormented young man. Whatever, the film is a remarkably internalised exploration of mental illness, because the tone refuses to let us off the hook. And because all of the performances are riotously funny, bridging the gaps between the humour, romance and violence.

Jerry (Ryan Reynolds) is just a normal guy. Well, that might not be totally correct - while he is chipper and happy, he is also incredibly mentally unstable. These others celebs also decided to end their very high profile engagements, although none of them accused each other of stealing expensive watches. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck AKA Bennifer were a bit of an odd couple to even begin with. In 2003 the couple were involved in an extremely high profile relationship, going so far as to co-star in a couple of god awful movies. The engagement was broken off in 2004, allegedly because Ben wasn’t ready to give up single life. Which makes sense because a year later he married Jennifer Garner. Burnnnnn.

Miley Cyrus & Barack Obama Among GQ's 'Least Influential' List

Dennis Rodman Miley Cyrus Barack Obama Paula Deen Justin Bieber Lady GaGa Ryan Reynolds Will Smith

Dennis Rodman topped one of the least desirable end of year lists going, as GQ placed the North Korea-infatuated former NBA star at the top of their annual 'Least Influential People' list. Rodman took home the dubious honour, which was awarded to Mitt Romney last year, beating politicians, pop stars, actors and actresses to the top spot thanks to his strange connection with North Korea and its dictator Kim Jong Un.

Described as a "Q-list celebrity willing to commit borderline treason just to hang out with a dictator who himself aspires to be a Q-list celebrity," by QG (reprinted by the Associated Press), Rodman won't be letter his minute influence get in the way of continuing his self-imposed peace mission in the dictatorship as he continues to travel back and forth to the Asian nation. Rodman revealed this week that he intends on going back to North Korea for the umpteenth time next month, this time going for an exhibition basketball tour.

Disgraced celebrity chef Paula Deen took the number two spot, with her racial slurs and subsequent court case with a former employee seeing her once glittering cooking empire crumble around her. The racist restauranteur was followed closely by former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose sexting exploits returned to the news for a second time whilst he was running for the New York mayorship in July. GQ described the horny Democrat as " the saddest lecher in American politics, and that's saying something, because they're all lechers."

Turbo Review

Very Good

Whizzy and superficial, this isn't the most complicated animated film ever made, but it's a lot of fun if you can buy into its silly premise about a snail who moves at super-fast speed. Aside from its riotous sense of energy and thrilling action sequences, the script is also packed with enough deranged humour to keep the adults laughing along with the kids.

It starts in a normal garden, where Theo (voiced by Reynolds) dreams of racing his human idol, the Indy champ Guy Gagne (Hader). Theo even calls himself "Turbo", annoying his pragmatic brother Chet (Giamatti). Then a freak accident involving nitrous-oxide gives him lightning speed. In search of a chance to race, he meets another dreamer with a practical-minded brother: Tito (Pena) is a man who owns a taco truck with his grumpy sibling Angelo (Guzman). And it's Tito who works with local business owners (Jenkins, Jeong and Rodriguez) to help Turbo achieve his goal to enter the Indianapolis 500 and race against his hero. On the track, Turbo is assisted by a pit-crew of Tito's pet snails (Jackson, Rudolph, Dogg and Schwartz).

Yes, the plot is preposterous, but the script openly acknowledges the insanity of the "snail vs car" race, maintaining the dizzying size discrepancy as all of the characters are just as incredulous as we are. The filmmakers also create a hilarious snail underworld packed with running gags about the perils of being so little. Although they haven't included much slime, which is a strange omission for a movie aimed primarily at pre-teen boys. Still, each snail (and each human too) is such a bundle of big personality traits that we don't really mind the gender and ethnic stereotypes.
