'American Idol' host Ryan Seacrest is in talks to create a rival music show with NBC.

The network has revealed that the TV presenter wants to create a new talent contest with his production company Ryan Seacrest Productions, further fuelling rumours that he is planning to leave his current position with rival channel Fox.

Paul Telegdy, head of alternative programming at NBC told the New York Post that the project is: "Another music concept, which is a totally different kind of competition show."

He added: "It is self-contained episodes. It is a bit more fun. It's not contestant competitive. It's artist competitive."

The planned show is in the very early stages of development, so it is too soon to say for sure whether Ryan's involvement would mean he is leaving 'American Idol' for sure. His current contract restricts him from appearing on any other broadcast network until 2012.

Paul said: "It can take anywhere from 12 months to two years to develop anything these days."
