Album Of The Week: The 37th Anniversary Of 'Diamond Life' By Sade

Sade

Diamond Life, released on the 16th July 1984, is not only a significant album in it's own right, it's a cultural touchstone and a near perfect representation of a particular moment in time. Sade not only brought a smooth and sophisticated air of genuine quality to a bombastic pop market in the mid-eighties they also brought to the fore a largely untapped genre. Sade's jazz influenced subtle soul mix gave rise to sophisti-pop, a title befitting it's time but a little light for what Sade actually delivered. With Diamond Life Sade launched a look, a lifestyle choice and with it the soundtrack to every well-to-do, or wannabe dinner party in the land. If Smooth Operator wasn't playing at a drinks party, a soirée or on the Blaupunkt cassette player in your Porsche as you drove into The City then quite frankly what were you thinking?

When big hair and even bigger shoulder pads were beginning to define Thatcher's hedonist decade of extravagance and polarization Sade Adu arrived with restraint and style. The smoldering horns and laid back percussion of Sade's first single Your Love Is King served as a fantastic introduction to the singer and her band when it was released five months ahead of the album in February of 1984. The self-penned debut single peaked at number six on the UK chart that, at the time, was headed up by Lionel Ritchie's saccharine sweet Hello.(To give it some context, the same chart also contained entries from Alexei Sayle, Tracy Ullman, Captain Sensible and Slade)

Wonder Women 1984: Musical Icons Of Their Age.

Madonna Tina Turner Sade Alison Moyet Cyndi Lauper Gloria Gaynor Nena Deniece Williams Chaka Khan

As Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman 1984 seems to be everywhere at the moment we thought we'd take a look back at the wonder women of music back in 1984. DC Comics inspirational character is strong, independent and driven, a quality possessed by our top ten female artists from 1984. Back then the UK had a woman PM (Let's not get into whether she was ever wonderful), the women of Tenko were still plotting their escape, Juliet Bravo was keeping the streets of Hartley safe and Miss Ellie, Sue Ellen and Pam were still keeping the men folk of Dallas in check. 1984 was also the year of Band Aid, Footloose, Ghostbusters and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. All girl groups were more popular than ever with Sister Sledge, The Pointer Sisters, The Weather Girls and Bananarama all making a significant contribution to the music of 1984. Other acts to feature a female lead also made their mark; Annie Lennox as part of Eurythmics, Alannah Currie as part of The Thompson Twins and Elizabeth Fraser (arguably the voice of a generation) with The Cocteau Twins. Today though we are focusing on the individual and wow what an incredible cast we've assembled.

Album Of The Week: Sade's Stronger Than Pride Needs More Recognition

Sade

This week we acknowledge 31 years since the release of Grammy-winning soul band Sade's hugely underrated third studio album Stronger Than Pride on Epic Records. While it wasn't as well received as their first two records, it was still deserving of its multi-Platinum status and remains one of the greatest funk-soul records of the decade.

The London-based group - named mononymously after their lead singer Sade Adu - have sold more than 75 million records globally, and are widely considered one of the most influential artists in soul and contemporary R&B in the UK in the 80s. Their last album release was 2010's Soldier of Love.

Tina Turner Marries Record Company Boss Erwin Bach In Switzerland

Tina Turner has married German record producer Erwin Bach in an exclusive ceremony on the shores of the beautiful Lake Zurich near their Kusnacht home. The pair have been dating since the eighties, with Turner publicly stating they'd never get married after her first marriage to Ike Turner turned out to be a toughie. Back when their engagement was announced earlier this year the media exploded with whoops of "toyboy!" and "cougar!" but it seems that their age difference - 16 years - has had no negative impact upon the happiness of their relationship.

In 2006, Turner dispelled any notion that she and Bach would ever exchange vows during an interview with Oprah Winfrey (as reported by The Daily Mail), voicing her concerns over the implications of a marriage: "People often ask me why don't I marry. I have love. I have a good life. I don't need to interfere with that. For some people, marriage means "You're mine now."
