Smith received the award at a star-studded awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London, hosted by actor Samuel L. Jackson. Smith’s award was presented by Disclosure, who have previous collaborated with Smith on such tracks as ‘Latch’.

In his acceptance speech, Smith thanked GQ, Disclosure and many of the people who helped on his album. He also alluded to the exciting news he had revealed earlier in the day

“Today has been the most amazing day,” Smith said. “To announce the Bond thing this morning is incredible; I’ve been keeping this secret for a year – it’s been intense – but I couldn’t think of a better way than to celebrate with all of you tonight.”

Smith’s first studio album, In the Lonely Hour, recently broke records but Smith has decided to take his time in releasing a new album. Speaking to the BBC, Smith revealed he is worried his fans may get “bored” of him if he produces anything too soon.

"It's not going to be any time soon I think people are going to get bored of me if I carry on, I'm just trying to make it the most honest work I've ever done,” Smith said. "I'm writing when I want to, so when bad things happen in my life I'm going into the studio and writing about it."

Other winners at the GQ awards Man of the Year Awards were: Will Ferrell (Comedian), Christoph Waltz (Actor), Paul Rudd (Leading Man), Lewis Hamilton (Sportsman) and Emilia Clarke (Woman of the Year).
