Smith won the award for Music Artist of the Year, while MCKellen was given the Global Icon Award for his activism on behalf of the LGBTQ community.

Fact: Sam Smith's hitmaking partner Jimmy 'Napes' Napier was the toast of the SESAC Pop Awards in New York City on Monday night (18Apr16), winning Songwriter and Song of the Year honours for the soul singer's I'm Not the Only One. Napier earned the same two prizes from officials at the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers (SESAC) last year (15) for Smith's Stay With Me. The songwriting partners also recently claimed gold at the Oscars for their James Bond theme Writing's On The Wall.

Fact: Singer Sam Smith and songwriter Jimmy Napes calmed their Oscars nerves by sipping on tea made for them by Governors Ball chef Wolfgang Puck. The duo was handed the soothing brew by E! host Ryan Seacrest during the Academy Awards pre-show, and then made their way down the red carpet with tea in hand. The tea perhaps gave the Brits a little extra luck on the night - Smith and Napes claimed gold for their James Bond theme Writing's on the Wall.

Fact: Soul singer Sam Smith surprised fans at electronic dance duo Disclosure's concert in Los Angeles on Tuesday night (29Sep15) by taking to the stage to sing their hit collaboration Latch and new track Omen. The gig marked Disclosure's first-ever arena show, and Sam praised them on Instagram.com following the appearance, writing, "SUPRISE LA xx what a night. Feel very honoured to have been on stage with two of my favourite people @disclosure to kick off the first show of there (sic) tour.
