Gravity dominated the US Weekend Box Office, with an audience response which matched the critic's reviews.
Gravity topped the US box office, heading to the top spot in its opening weekend. The film gained over $55 million, knocking Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 from its spot at number 1.
Gravity was released in the US on Friday 4th October.
Gravity sees Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as Dr Ryan Stone and Matt Kowalsky, a medical engineer and an astronaut sent into space. After an accident occurs, the two are forced to survive alone, cast adrift in space.
Gravity has received impressive reviews since its release in US cinemas. Many have claimed the film is unique and a rare phenomenon. Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal wrote "motion pictures have been with us since the middle of the 19th century, but there's never been one like Gravity." Whilst Claudia Puig, of USA Today, described the film as "the kind of enthralling, all-encompassing, giddy cinematic experience that surfaces once in a blue moon."

Another big budget and highly anticipated film was Runner Runner, starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake. The film, which opened on Friday (4th October) in the US, has received poor reviews, largely described as "forgettable" (Slant Magazine) and "a by the book thriller" (Chicago Sun-Tribune). The film's reviews seem to have indicated the audience's response as the film gained just over $7 million.
Another new comer to the box office is romantic comedy Pulling Strings, starring Laura Ramsey and Jaime Camil. The film entered the chart at number 9, earning little over $2 million.
Prisoners and Rush (2013) whilst remaining in the charts have lost two places. Elsewhere in the chart Don Jon descended one place to number 6. Baggage Claim lost three places, making it into seventh place. Insidious Chapter 2, after four weeks in the top ten, went in at number 8. Finally, down from 11, Enough Said rounds off the chart.
Gravity is released in the UK on November 8th.
