The premiere of season 10 of Grey's Anatomy aired last night (Thursday 26th September). Last season ended with a storm and this season's premiere continued with it still blustering in the background.

Here's a quick recap (beware - spoilers included!):

The major medical emergency the team faced was Richard (James Pickens Jr.), lying electrocuted, who was discovered by Heather Brooks (Tina Majorino) the new and ambitious intern. Sadly, Heather is electrocuted by the same puddle which caught Richard last season. Unfortunately Heather dies, despite Derek's best efforts.

Richard is worked on by Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Alex (Justin Chambers) and Cristina (Sandra Oh). When his heart is stabilized, Bailey searches out his next of kin in order to acquire permission for surgery. As it transpires, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is down as Richard's emergency contact. No one thinks Richard is strong enough to survive the surgery, nevertheless Meredith gives the go-ahead.

A short way into the operation, Richard's girlfriend Catherine Avery charges in, ordering Bailey to stop the op. Bailey, strangely, does so. After consulting Meredith, again, the operation once again goes ahead and Richard is saved. In terms of romance, the episode primarily focussed on the relationship between Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). The couple are involved in a bitter custody battle and lesbian divorce, something which, as THR points out, is rarely featured on television. Callie is still furious at Arizona for having an affair with a visiting doctor last season.

Sandra Oh

Sandra Oh, who plays Dr Cristina Yang, announced in August that she would be leaving the show at the end of this season. Creator Shonda Rhimes did not reveal how she and the writing crew intended to remove the character from the show and few clues were provided in the first episode.

Cristina has, on the other hand, been suffering owing to her relationship with Owen (Kevin McKidd). It seems that even though the couple are no longer together, there's still plenty of heat in their relationship as they quarrel twice during the episode. Love is in the air elsewhere however as Jo and Alex continue their tryst in the on-call room. April (Sarah Drew) continues waiting for Jackson (Jesse Williams) to give her a reason not to marry her current fiancé, at the end of the episode Jackson encourages April to reaccept paramedic Matthew's proposal.

Oh and Meredith's baby is really cute too - one of the few high points in the dramatic season premiere.
