SNL stumbled through its first episode back from hiatus.
After a two-week hiatus, SNL clearly needs to find its footing again – the sketches were only moderately good, and we may have laughed at about half of it. Thankfully, there was Scarlett Johansson to host and guest star and generally make the whole thing a little less awkward.
Scarlett Johansson's SNL episode: not as awkward as it could have been.
First of all, there was the monologue, which was... well, bearable. It takes a lot of charisma to make the line “I guess I’m officially a MILF... mother in lots of films” work, but the Avengers: Age of Ultron star has buckets of it anyway. Charisma, I mean.

If you want some highlights – the Black Widow: Age of Me sketch, about a romantic comedy starring your favourite former Soviet assassin was pretty good. Featuring Thor as Nat Romanoff’s obligatory gay best friend character, a “Penis: activated.” Line and the tagline “Marvel: We know girls,” you know this is going to be good. And topical, after Marvel fell under fire for biting their time on the Black Widow movie and generally failing at representing diverse female characters.

Unfortunately, that was pretty much it for this episode of SNL. Well, that and Wiz Khalifa. Always a highlight. Tune in next week, for a female-driven episode hosted by Reese Witherspoon and featuring Florence + the Machine.
