The critical derision directed towards The Amazing Spider-Man 2 wasn't enough to stop Sony pulling in $95 million last week, though its long campaign to reach the heights of the original movie may falter this weekend when Seth Rogen and Zac Efron's acclaimed comedy Neighbors makes its bow.

Universal have marketed its latest comedy perfectly, with the buzz seemingly reaching fever pitch ahead of its domestic box-office debut. According to industry insiders who spoke with Variety, the movie could pull in $35 million to land the top spot.

The sign have always been good for Neighbors. It's advanced ticket ale on Fandango were nearly double that of Rogen' 'This Is The End', which opened to $20 million in 2013. Expectation is that it could even over-perform, as 'Ted' did when it pulled in $54 million despite predictions of just $30 million.

With an expected 50% drop, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may have to settle for the second spot. That's quite possible, with Iron Man 3 falling 50% in its second weekend. Thor dropped 47%.

The Spidey sequel suffered fairly poor reviews and may have been hurt by the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which opened last month. 

Neighbors is tracking strongly because of its appeal to various audience. It'll pull in the female Zac Efron fans, while also attracting Rogen's strong male audience.

Elsewhere this week, Sony-Tristar's family comedy Mom's Night Out bows at over 1,000 locations and should pull in the Mother's Day crowd. 

The bottom line? Watch out Spider-Man, Seth is coming for you.
