'Unfriended' Offers Olive-Branch To Weekend Cinemagoers

Shelley Hennig

It took a lot not to sneer at the trailer for Unfriended. Surely just another low-budget, hammy, opportunist horror flick looking to hose up the undecided cinemagoers and make a quick buck. Yet, the critical reaction to Levan Gabriadze's movie has been intriguingly positive.

UnfriendedUnfriended has scored reasonably good reviews from critics

It tells the story of a group of online chat room friends who find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend.

Unfriended Review

Good

The main achievement of this gimmicky horror is that it manages to hit all of the essential scary movie beats as the story unfolds in real time on a computer screen. Essentially a combination of the found footage and teen slasher genres, the movie relies a bit too much on loud noises for its most frightening moments, but director Leval Gabriadze also builds a terrific sense of suspense as the plot escalates. And by presenting it on a normal laptop screen, the film both looks fresh and has an eerie timeliness.

That laptop belongs to Blaire (Shelley Hennig), a teen who's having a lusty chat on Skype with her boyfriend Mitch (Moses Storm) when they're joined by their lively friends Adam, Jess and Ken (Will Peltz, Renee Olstead and Jacob Wysocki), and later by Val (Courtney Halverson). But there's also a mysterious unknown caller online who begins to taunt them about the death of fellow student Laura (Heather Sossaman) exactly one year ago. Is Laura's ghost using social media to get even with the teens who used a viral YouTube clip to drive her to take her own life? Or is someone else hacking into their system, controlling their screens and playing a game that threatens to kill them off one by one?

All of this plays out on Blaire's computer screen as she clicks from window to window using iMessage, Google, Instagram and Facebook to fill in the story with video, news stories and images, plus a panicky visit to Chat Roulette to get some help (as if!). The screen flicks around, showing conversations within chats as Blaire's mouse-control gets increasing shaky. So even if the plot itself is essentially a rehash of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Paranormal Activity, it generates plenty of overwrought emotion and scary jolts along the way.

A situation that's not altogether too unfamiliar, a high school girl named Laura Barnes commits suicide after being bullied over a humiliating video that was posted online, showing her drunk at a party. On the anniversary of her death, a group of her fellow classmates who were among the main bullies get together for a group video webchat. However, their conversation is quickly interrupted by an anonymous hacker named billie227, who will apparently stop at nothing to find out who posted the Laura Barnes video. Fear is instantly spread through the group when billie227 starts to turn everyone against each other, while methodically picking them off one by one. Is it a phantom? Laura's ghost? Or has Laura got some very sinister fans out there?

Ouija Trailer

Sometimes, the most terrifying experiences come from childhood games. One such case is that of the Ouija board - a board game designed for communicating with the dead. Debbie (Shelley Hennig) choses to stay in one night and not go out on the town with her friends. While at home, she discovers a mysterious Ouija board in an upstairs room and is later found dead. Her friends decide that, as they miss her, they want to contact her in the afterlife via an Ouija board that they also discover. After making a connection with the afterlife, the friends soon realise that the board is linked to them and bringing them into conflict with an old spectre that seems hell-bent on tormenting them. The Ouija board is not a game for them anymore - it is a newfound level of ultimate terror.
