Alec Baldwin seems to have ended his love affair with New York City. Or would that be MSNBC? Or public life in general? Regardless, Baldwin seems to be fed up with all of it, if his candid essay, published on Vulture, is anything to go by. In the essay, Baldwin recounts all the ways in which 2013 was “pretty awful”, starting with the accusations of homophobia that came his way early in the year.

Baldwin seemed to be on a collision course for most of 2013.

Baldwin has a bit of ire reserved for almost everyone – MSNBC, Rachel Maddow, Shia LaBeouf – no one is safe from his wrath. He goes on to explain how his clashing with LaBeouf sabotaged his return to theater and how later in the year, his talk show was relegated to MSNBC, even though Baldwin wanted to do in on NBC instead. It’s a long read. Even despite the inevitable inaccuracies, it’s still interesting to read Baldwin’s point of view on the whole debacle – and he certainly isn’t shy about sharing it.

If Jamie Bell’s account is anything to go by, working with Lars Von Trier is a truly unforgettable experience. The young British actor has recounted the Danish director’s strange directing techniques with The Guardian in an interview, and they involve meeting him, totally naked (Von Trier, not Bell) and smacking Charlotte Gainsbourg with pleasantries skipped.

"I'd just got to Copenhagen to begin shooting. Thomas was showing me around: 'We built this set here, this is where the production design room is.' Then we had to walk past this outdoor pool and there was Lars with a towel in his hand,” explained bell. “He dropped the towel, he shook my hand – he was stark bollock-naked – and he said, 'Do you want to come for a swim?' And I said, 'I'm all right man, I just got here, I've still got my suitcase, so I'll wait.'"

This weekend sees the limited release of Lars Von Trier’s latest mindbender: Nymphomaniac. Fans of the enigmatic Danish director will relish the chance to see both volumes back to back with this one-day (Saturday Feb 22) release, but if you need convincing to see 4.5 hours of Lars then read on.

Gainsbourg gets up to some raunchy stuff in Nymphomaniac

The film, like many of Von Trier’s, sees Charlotte Gainsbourg take the lead role. She’s a troubled nymphomaniac who provides the film’s plot by recounting her life after Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård) finds her beaten in an alley.

It’s split in to two parts – Volume I and II – and both parts are playing tomorrow in London as a double feature. The reviews, however, seem to focus on individual volumes, with the first achieving 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the second, 83%.

“A provocative, engrossing, often hilarious, frequently tough picture. Not for all sensibilities but it's among von Trier's more playful, purely entertaining films, with insight and humour in even the horrors,” wrote Empire’s Kim Newman in his review.

“By the end of four hours the concept "picaresque" has been serially used and abused, much like the film's heroine. There's a vision here, even so, that shapes the film's prolix, promiscuous ends,” said Nigel Andrews in The Financial Times.

“For the most part Nymphomaniac is compelling and achieves exactly what von Trier set out to do: a multi-faceted exploration of sexuality, in all its bizarre, twisted glory,” writes James Mottram for The List.

And here, at Contact Music, Rich Cline awarded Nymphomaniac (both volumes as one film) 4/5, writing: “For the most part Nymphomaniac is compelling and achieves exactly what von Trier set out to do: a multi-faceted exploration of sexuality, in all its bizarre, twisted glory.”

If one thing’s for sure, it’s that Lars Von Trier will take you out of your comfort zone with Nymphomaniac, and it’s something you should experience in its enterity. So what are you waiting for, pick up the phone and start dialing! Oh wait, that’s a different film.

Why then, if the 27 year-old Nymphomaniac actor is so averse to a bit of spotlight, has Shia embarked on a trail of most bizarre incidents, starting will his plagiarism of a graphic artist's work, followed by over-apologising, declaring his retirement, walking out of a Nymphomaniac press conference, wearing a paper bag with "I Am Not Famous Anymore" and leading up to his LA art exhibition.

The list of weirdness was long enough without the art exhibition, entitled "#IAMSORRY." Visitors are reported to have been scanned by a security guard before they were allowed in one at a time to "see" Shia. They were expected to pick an implement from a table, which apparently included a Daniel Clowes graphic novel, a wrench, and some Hershey Kisses, before going into a room where Shia sat silently with a bag over his head.

While Eric Cantona is no stranger to being banned, his latest is not really his fault. The advert in which he stars – one for Kronenbourg 1664 – has been pulled for misleading customers.

The misleading part comes from the assertion within the advert that the beer is brewed in a particular French town, Alsace. But it’s not: it’s brewed in the rainy British city of Manchester. Which isn’t quite as glamorous. The ad sees Cantona parody the treatment footballers get, from fan adulation to superstar treatment in various establishments.

Is Shia LaBeouf a misunderstood genius of our time? The actor went from cryptic tweets to deliberate plagiarism, to storming out of a press conference and wearing a paper bag on his head and finally, to a performance art piece. LaBeouf brought out the “I Am Not Famous Anymore” paper bag for a performance art piece, which will run Tuesday through Sunday at the Cohen gallery in Los Angeles. The piece is called “#IAMSORRY” and it was announced via press release from the gallery.

“Shia LaBeouf is sorry. Sincerely sorry. He will be in situ at 7354 Beverly Boulevard for the duration. Implements will be provided. Free admission,” the announcement said.

It was all part of a bigger picture.

Lars Von Trier's controversial new movie Nymphomaniac has gone down a storm with critics after having premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. He later appeared on the red carpet for the premiere screening wearing a brown paper bag with the words "I am not famous anymore" written on it with two eye holes.

1. Dropping acid for a role.
For his role in Charlie Countryman, Shia dropped acid in front of several cast and crew members including Ron Weasley, I mean Rupert Grint. Grint later described how LaBeouf “smashed the place up, got naked and kept seeing this owl,” wow, however if the owl was Pigwidgeon it’s understandable.

2. The Sigur Rós video
Shia starred in the video for Icelandic band Sigur Rós’ single 'Fjögur Píanó', where his performance inclduing doing some weird interpretive dancing and then stripping off, unsurprisingly the video became a viral hit. Warning NSFW:

2013 is the year of the 'selfie,' the Oxford English Dictionary reckons at least, as the word used to describe a self-shot photograph has been named as the word of the year by the established dictionary authority. And it’s not as though he wasn’t warned: emotional pleas to delay the filming during remembrance Sunday fell of deaf ears as Ayer pushed on with his schedule.

A stuntman on Brad Pitt's World War II movie Fury was stabbed in the shoulder with a bayonet and air lifted to hospital in Oxford this week. The 35-year-old was accidentally injured during a rehearsal at the movie's set in Pyrton, Oxfordshire. Not familiar with this movie? Read our 'Everything you need to know about Fury'. 

Earlier this month, a letter was sent to residents in the community on behalf of Pinewood Studios, warning them to expect "intermittent controlled gunfire and explosives" during the shoot for the movie.

A spokesman for the movie confirmed the stabbing happened as two stuntmen were filming at a converted farm.

However things got a little too real today on set when a stuntman was injured by a bayonet, i.e. the pointed blade attached to the end of a gun. BBC News reports that a 35 year-old was injured at around midday in Pyrton and was subsequently airlifted to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital.

A Still From Lars Von Trier's Controversial New Movie 'Nymphomaniac'

In 2011, Lars Von Trier was the undisputed headline maker at the Cannes Film Festival, though for all the reasons. "What can I say, I understand Hitler. I think he did his wrong things ... but I understand the man," the Danish filmmaker said at a press conference for his movie Melancholia, as Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg looked for the nearest hole to swallow them up. On the occasion, Von Trier was regarded persona non grata and was essentially banished from the festival.

Now, two years later, he has another controversial movie to promote - Nymphomaniac with Gainsbourg, Jamie Bell, Shia LaBeouf and Willem Dafoe - though there is no room for the movie at Cannes. Instead it premieres four days after the festival ends, in Denmark. According to Fox, Von Trier is not banned from the Cannes and simply missed the cut-off submission date for his movie to screen there. The Guardian's critic Xan Brooks argued that Cannes without the filmmaker is simply not the same - and the blustery Riviera weather has done little to make stars, critics and filmmakers feel at home. We know she probably hasn’t been on your mind too much lately, but Megan Fox’s trampoline studs made headlines yesterday. The Transformers starlet was caught filming a scene for her upcoming Michael Bay production, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As Fox was wearing tight clothing – a tank top and yoga pants, you can imagine how excited the fanboys got over the stills. We’ll give you a hint: very excited.

For those of you who haven’t been paying close attention, here’s a quick rundown of the Fox/Bay situation. The actress starred along with Shia LaBeouf in the first two transformer movies, before being booted off for a younger, hotter actress (who had, as you may have guessed, even fewer lines in the film than Fox had had). At this point though, everything is mended between Bay and Fox and she is back to provide the mandated dose of eye candy in the flick - which, judjing from the trampoline photos, courtesy of Us Weekly, she is doing a spectacular job providing.

In this new adaptation, Fox will be portraying TV reporter April O’Neil and she’ll be teaming up with actors Alan Ritchson (Raphael), Noel Fisher (Michelangelo), Jeremy Howard (Donatello), Pete Ploszek (Leonardo) and Danny Woodburn (Splinter), as well as a lot of CGI. The plot or general idea is as of yet unknown, but you can count on the fact that, in typical Michael Bay style, there will at least be lots of explosions throughout to keep you from getting bored.

The Broadway production of Lyle Kessler's 'Orphans' starring Alec Baldwin, opened at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Thursday evening (April 18, 2013), after a chaotic build-up that saw lead star Shia LaBeouf walk out of rehearsals. The play follows two orphaned brothers living in a decrepit North Philadelphia row house. The eldest (originally played by Shia, now by Ben Foster) supports his younger sibling (Tom Sturridge) by stealing before kidnapping a rich old man (Baldwin) who becomes the father figure the boys never had.

LaBeouf departed after a highly publicized disagreement with Alec Baldwin, with private emails making their way online. "I can tell you that, in all honesty, I don't think he's in a good position to be giving interpretations of what the theater is and what the theater isn't," Baldwin told Vulture.com afterwards. However, the Transformers actor showed up on the front row for the previews at the end of March and led a resounding standing ovation when it finished.

Shia LaBeouf attended the opening performance of the Broadway play Orphans on Tuesday night, despite having been fired from the play around a month earlier. ‘How supportive and mature of him,’ you may be thinking. Well… not quite. This is Shia LaBeouf, we’re talking about here – you know, the former child actor who hasn’t quite managed to shake off the whole ‘spoilt brat’ thing that most child actors have? No, it turns out that Shia went to the effort of sitting through the entire performance of Orphans, just to make a highly sarcastic gesture at the end, thumping the stage with over-exaggerated enthusiasm as his replacement, Ben Foster, took a bow. Bitter? Um, yes, just a touch, it seems. 

The cast that never was...

According to a report from New York Times, La Beouf appeared to be at the show alone and sat on the front row, on the aisle. He left his seat during the interval but returned for the second half. At the curtain call, Shia was the first audience member to stand, jumping to his feet “before any other audience member to give a standing ovation at the end.” As Foster took a bow, his predecessor “rapped his palm on the stage.” He left soon after.

Robert Redford appears to be back on track. Some five years after his disappointing drama 'Lions For Lambs', the Oscar winning director has returned to similar territory with 'The Company You Keep,' a slick looking drama starring an all-star cast. And when we say all-star cast, we really do mean it.

Redford stars and directs in the story of Jim Grant, a public interest lawyer and single father living in New York. Shia LaBeouf plays a scruffy intrepid journalist who exposes Grant as a man wanted for a murder he allegedly committed in his days as an anti-war radical. When another member of the Weather Underground - played by Susan Sarandon - is arrested, LaBeouf's Ben Shepard smells an opportunity to make a name for himself with a national story. The superb Stanley Tucci plays his prickly finger-pointing editor (is it us, or was he born to play a prickly finger-pointing editor?) while the excellent Anna Kendrick plays a vulnerable FBI agent. Elsewhere, there's a gruff looking Nick Nolte, the old-hand Richard Jenkins and legendary western actor Sam Elliott. Oh, and there's Brendan Gleeson. And Terrence Howard. And Julie Christie.

Shia LaBeouf quits Broadway play after a week of rehearsals? We can’t say we’re too surprised. The actor was to play Treat in a revival of Lyle Kessler’s 1983 play Orphans, however, it appears he ran into difficulties with co-star Alec Baldwin, who himself has had a rough week after being accused of racist slurs by the New York Post. It’s bad news for LaBeouf fans who had already snapped up tickets for the Transformers star’s Broadway debut when they were made available two days ago, though the nature of his exit looks complex.

On Wednesday, LaBeouf – who allegedly dropped acid for his turn in The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman - took to Twitter to post a series of emails to and from members of the creative team. One from the director Daniel Sullivan appears to hint at artistic tensions between LaBeouf and Baldwin, both hot-headed yet talented performers. “I'm too old for disagreeable situations,” Sullivan wrote, “You're one hell of a great actor. Alec is who he is. You are who you are. You two are incompatible. I should have known it.” Sullivan appears to suggest Shia tried to dissuade him from putting him in the production, saying, “This one will haunt me. You tried to warn me. You said you were a different breed. I didn't get it.”

In an email to both Baldwin and Sullivan, LaBeouf apologizes for his role in the situation, saying, “A man can tell you that he was wrong. That he did wrong. That he planned to. He can tell you when he is lost. He can apologise, even if it's just to put an end to the bickering.” The correspondence paints a picture of a tense and frosty atmosphere on the set of the play, which is set to open at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in the spring. The production’s official website still features a banner with Baldwin, LaBeouf and the British actor Tom Sturridge.

It seems most of the publicity for Shia LaBeouf's 'The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman' has focused squarely on the lead actor's drug taking in preparation for a scene in the movie. At Sundance this week, LaBeouf confirmed he dropped acid for a sequence in which his character Charlie is tripping on LSD.

The movie - by newcomer Fredrik Bond - follows the story of a young American who travels to Eastern Europe with no plans or ambitions. He lands in Romania, a place more foreign than he could have ever imagined. Charlie finds himself pursuing an equally lost girl named Gabi, a mysterious woman with a dark past. The film generated plenty of buzz at Sundance, though after wading through the tales of acid and method acting, is The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman really that necessary?

The critics don't think so.

With speculation about forthcoming Star Wars movies reaching boiling point, we think it's time to sit back, take a breath, and ask, "WHAT ABOUT INDIANA JONES?" As has been widely reported, George Lucas has handed over his brainchild LucasFilm to Disney for a cool $4 billion, with the studio giant signalling itself intention to go ahead and make further the Stars Wars saga.

Of course, the sci-fi franchise will be Disney's main priority in terms of what they've got for their money, but they now own the rights to Indiana Jones too, which has pulled in nearly $1.9 million at the domestic box office. Despite scathing reviews, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull still pulled in $786.6 million in 2008, proving demand for the franchise is anything but dead. Disney already had two hugely popular Indiana theme parks, the Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland in California and the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando. On paper, a new movie appears to be a no-brainer, though things are a little more complicated in reality. 

According to Entertainment Weekly, Disney chief Bob Iger said there were "some encumbrances" to monetizing Indiana Jones and Steven Spielberg isn't exactly jumping at the chance to direct adventure-action films at the moment. During a recent interview in promotion of his Lincoln biopic, he explained, "I knew I could do the action in my sleep. At this point in my career, in my life, the action doesn't hold any - it doesn't attract me anymore." Should Lincoln go on to win Golden Globes and Oscars, we could probably rule a new Indiana Jones movie out, straight away.
