The Conjuring 2 Review

Very Good

Continuing on from the 2013 hit, this sequel blends fact and fiction to follow real-life ghostbusters Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) from the 1976 Amityville haunting to an encounter with the Enfield poltergeist in 1977 London. Filmmaker James Wan continues to deploy every cinematic gimmick he knows to freak out the audience, and the fact that it's based on a true story makes it even more unsettling. Although the cliches of the genre feel a bit tired.

The story opens in Amityville, where the Warrens are deeply disturbed by supernatural forces and decide to take some time off. But they're soon summoned to England to help a family being terrorised by a nasty spirit. Arriving in Enfield, North London, they meet Peggy Hodgson (Frances O'Connor), a plucky single mother of four, who is worried that the ghost of an angry old man is threatening her 11-year-old daughter Janet (Madison Wolfe). Now staying with neighbours (Simon Delaney and Maria Doyle Kennedy) across the street, Peggy has also called in two experts, a true believer (Simon McBurney) and a sceptic (Franka Potente), to work with the Warrens to clear this malevolent presence from the family home.

While the script inventively intermingles the facts of the case with a generous dose of movie fiction, Wan fills the screen with all kinds of creepy goings-on, including banging noises, levitating furniture and flickering TV screens. Additional standard scares include a nerve-jangling toy and a seriously scary nun (who's about to get her own spin-off film, like the creepy doll Annabelle from the first movie). Wan also uses manipulative movie trickery from moody music to grubby production design to prowling camerawork that constantly reveals something frightening in the deep shadows. What he never does is find a new way to scare the audience: we have seen all of these tricks before, but of course they still work.

David Wozniak may be a lazy, middle-aged slob now, but he certainly did enough in his younger years to get himself into a situation that no man could ever dream of happening to them. After donating a vial of sperm to a sperm bank some 20-plus years ago, he is visited by an official from the clinic who informs him that he has in fact managed to father a colossal 533 children. Unfortunately, a good percentage of those 'kids' are now taking legal action in a bid to discover the identity of their biological father, nicknamed Starbuck. His lawyer has managed to pick up an envelope of all their profiles, giving David a strict instruction not to open it. Curiosity overcomes him when he opens it and he suddenly finds himself overwhelmed with a desire to take care of every one of his offspring and help them in any way he can. However, with a sceptical girlfriend, an unsupportive best friend and a lawyer who thinks he should stay away, he has got so many tough decisions to make.

This hilarious and heartwarming movie is based on the recent French film 'Starbuck'. Both were directed and written by Ken Scott ('Sticky Fingers', 'The Rocket: The Legend of Rocket Richard') and it tells a tale of responsibility and the true meaning of parenthood. 'Delivery Man' will be released in the UK on January 10th 2014.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa - Clips

Alan Partridge is a fatuous, egocentric radio host that has been one of telly's most famous fictitious comedy icons for several years. He now makes a return to screen as his employers, North Norfolk Digital based in Norwich, are about to be taken over by rival media company, Gordale Media, and branded the new name, 'Shape'. People's jobs are now on the line but Alan and his sidekick Simon look like they'll be able to save their shows; one thing's for sure, he's certainly trying to get on the good side of new top boss Jason Tresswell. However, when one DJ is sacked, there's more conflict in the company than they could ever have imagined when they are thrown under siege and brutally held hostage.

David Wozniak is a 40-something year old slob who did some stupid things to earn a living when he was much younger. When he is visited by an official from the local sperm bank, he discovers that one of those stupid things has led to him fathering no less than 533 children after donating his seed back in the nineties and now he is up against a lawsuit from 142 of them who are demanding to know his real identity after only being aware of his alias 'Starbuck'. With a lawyer who thinks the best course of action is to plead insanity in court, David must consider whether or not he should follow his intrigue and come forward, or retreat and fight for his anonymity. Meanwhile, his current girlfriend is having second thoughts about him as she becomes pregnant, fretting over his suitability to face up to his responsibilities.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa Trailer

Alan Partridge makes a return as the superficial radio nitwit we all love in the upcoming next instalment of the Partridge franchise 'Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa'. The trailer now released shows Alan discussing movie titles with his associates, being particularly drawn to the title 'Colossal Velocity'. When the title 'Alpha Papa' is suggested, appropriately representing his initials in the radio alphabet and loosely meaning 'top daddy', he is underwhelmed, sticking as usual to his own thoughts. The film takes place in Norwich, Norfolk where his employer North Norfolk Digital is about to be taken over in a brutal siege by a major media company and given the new name, Shape.
