Slipknot - Nottingham 26 January 2015 Live Review Live Review

This has never been about exclusion. Slipknot have always been such a divisive entity because people fear the unknown, and people fear power. Slipknot's meteoric rise to being the biggest heavy metal band of this generation has not come from watering down their anvil-heavy music to appeal to a wider market, it has been driven by a growing fan base of fierce loyalty. Slipknot's 'maggots' are a singular breed. Selling out the Nottingham's Capital FM Arena in minutes, those branded 'outsiders' have suddenly found themselves in their millions across the world, and part of a family. This has never been about exclusion.

Slipknot - Nottingham 26 January 2015 Live Review

After three years of much documented discord, from the passing of bassist Paul Gray to the acrimonious departure of drummer Joey Jordison, Slipknot have never needed such loyal support more. And what a reward this was. A staggering three-tiered stage bedecked in lights and topped with a huge goat's head provided a visual spectacle backed with retina-searing pyrotechnics; there has never been a more fitting accompaniment to 90 minutes filled with the primest of prime cuts from their enviable back catalogue.

Sarcastrophe and The Heretic Anthem provided an earth-shattering one-two punch to kick off proceedings, the nine masked members tearing through the songs with an inherent energy and violence. While championing material from latest release .5: The Gray Chapter, it's an effortless showcase dipping into every corner of their 15-year history. Opium Of The People provides a welcome curveball, while the likes of Dead Memories, Before I Forget and Duality are simply stunning to behold. These songs have been the soundtrack for the misunderstood youth, and to hear them in an arena surrounding added real, tangible weight.

Justin Bieber Vs. Slipknot: Music's Maddest Mash-up Tracks

Nirvana Justin Bieber Korn Slipknot Taylor Swift Adele Britney Spears Nine Inch Nails Carly Rae Jepsen

There are certain things in life that don’t sound like they should ever go together, but then you put them together and...they just do. Peanut butter and jelly, French fries dipped in chocolate milkshakes, Justin Bieber and Slipknot. Huh? Yep, you heard us right! Some musical masters out there are just capable of seeing the potential for a great/totally bonkers mash-up song, when the rest of us could never imagine mixing two totally different artists together.  The result can be oddly hypnotic and scarily addictive.  Take these mad, but surprisingly great, mash-ups for example.

carly rae jepsen mashups Are Carly Rae Jepsen and Nine Inch Nails made for each other?

You’d never imagine that Carly Rae Jepsen, she of super cheesy ‘Call Me Maybe’ fame, could ever be teamed up with industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails and the result not make you want to claw your ears off. Call Me a Hole, the Carley Rae Jepsen vs. Nine Inch Nails mash-up is surprisingly easy listening. The poppy beats of Miss Swift behind Trent Reznor’s recognisable rasp kind of works, perhaps these guys could actually get together for a legitimate collaboration one day!

Rollerball Review

Terrible

There's an idea behind remaking old movies that weren't that great in the first place: Instead of screwing up a classic, make a better version of a failed film. Witness, for example, Steven Soderbergh's smarter, snappier Rat Pack-less retread of "Ocean's Eleven," which got several times the cinematic mileage of its predecessor.

But this concept seems to be lost on flash-bang action director John McTiernan, whose vacuous, pure-noise-and-atmosphere update of 1975's "Rollerball" -- a cautionary, futuristic parable of extreme sports bloodlust -- is so devoid of substance it almost defies description.

Rollerball is a ferocious team sport -- part roller derby, part motocross, part World Wrestling Federation -- played in fictionalized and extremely corrupt Central Asian nations. The sport's biggest star is virtuous pall-American import Jonathan Cross (Chris Klein), who has just discovered the league owners are rigging the games for more violence because spilt blood spells ratings for their TV networks.
