Last year (14), Quadrophenia star Phil Daniels launched a crowd-funding campaign for Midnight of My Life, a film focused on Marriott set in July, 1985 during the famous Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium in London.

The drive reached its target in January (15), and producers behind the project, which is to be directed by Daniels, have now announced The Hobbit star Freeman will lead the cast.

A post on the film's official Twitter.com page reads, "We're delighted to announce that Martin Freeman is officially on board to play Steve Marriott in our film! He'll be perfect for the role!"

Marriott's daughter Mollie also gave Freeman her blessing to play her father, tweeting, "Thrilled that Martin Freeman will be playing Dad in @SteveShortFilm Midnight of My Life. Great casting. A lover of all things mod. Good luck."
