The Beguiled Trailer

John McBurney is a Union soldier who is found injured in the grounds of a Mississippi Confederate all-girls boarding school in 1863. The girls and their headmistress Miss Farnsworth take him inside to care for him, locking him in a room to keep him separated from the girls, but during his stay he manages to charm the likes of teacher Edwina Dabney and one of the elder students, Alicia, not to mention Martha herself. John's presence in the house disrupts the once quaint atmosphere, and it soon becomes thick with deceit and jealousy. As each of the girls turn on one another one by one, they begin to realise who the real enemy is. And John finds himself in far more danger than he ever was in the ongoing Civil War.

Bill Murray Will Perform Classic Christmas Carols In Upcoming TV Special! Yes, This Is Happening

Bill Murray Sofia Coppola

Doesn’t it seem like there’s never a normal, run of the mill story about Bill Murray? He's always either crashing someone’s party, dishing out advice to strangers or being honoured with his very own 'day'. But as an actor, Murray is still able to get us very giddy, all he needs to do is announce an exciting new work project. Case in point: this 'Christmas TV special'.

Bill MurrayBill Murray always manages to surprise us

Yes when you think of Bill Murray at Christmas time you probably have a vision of him in Scrooged, saying ‘bah humbug’ to it all. But this Christmas Murray looks set to show an altogether different side of himself, the side which apparently sings classic carols.

It truly was what it said on the tin at the Fashion Group International's 30th Annual Night Of Stars held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, as the likes of pop sensation Miley Cyrus and soul legend Aretha Franklin made appearances at the gala. Miley looked almost unrecognisable in a floor length sparkly gown with only her arms and back on show - as opposed to her preferred see through variety.

The Bling Ring Review

Excellent

Once again, Sofia Coppola confounds expectations with an astutely relevant approach to a true story. These events may be torn from the headlines, but they also echo the world around us. And Coppola is giving us a telling insight into youth culture and its obsession with the high life existence of vacuous stars like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian. It's also a very funny film, and deeply chilling too.

Set in suburban Los Angeles, the story centres on Marc (Broussard), a new kid at high school who befriends the Rebecca (Chang), an opportunistic thief who raids unlocked cars then gets an idea when she reads that Paris Hilton will be out of town. They look up Hilton's address online, find the key under her doormat and have an evening of riotous partying in her house, stealing a few souvenirs to prove it. But when they brag about it, their friends (Watson, Julien and Farmiga) want in on the action, so they start raiding homes of a variety of their favourite stars, always finding an unlocked door or window.

Before they were caught, these teens stole more than $3 million worth of cash, jewellery and designer-label clothes. And arrest only made them more excited, because now they were household names themselves. Unsurprisingly, Coppola's approach to these characters is never judgmental, which sometimes makes the film difficult to watch. These teens are unconcerned about the morality of stealing from someone who won't even notice that anything is missing from their obscene stockpile. And their desire for instant fame and fortune is understandable because the entire culture glorifies just that through reality TV and tabloid news.

The Bling Ring, Pretty Wild And Five Moments Of Unforgettable TV History

Sofia Coppola Emma Watson Katie Chang Israel Broussard

Sofia Coppola’s the Bing Ring opened in theatres this weekend. Much has been said about the film, its plot, connotations, director, stars, characters... but few remember the 2010 reality show Pretty Wild, which served as some of the source material for The Bling Ring. In the failed (on all counts, this show was deemed the worst in history and barely lasted a season) reality programme, we are acquainted with Alexis Neiers, her adopted sister Tess Taylor and their entire erratic family. Their mother, Andrea Arlington, a former model and current full-time LA-dweller/momager was originally supposed to be the star of the show, but after Alexis’s involvement in a 2010 series of robberies by the so-called LA Burgler Bunch (or The Bling Ring) the focus shifted from mother to daughters and their incredible lives. Said lives, while obviously scripted for the show, definitely yield some priceless moments, which we’ll revisit below for your enjoyment. Let’s start with something light.

5. Alexis, Tess and Gabby’s homeschooling “lesson” In the first episode from the series, Andrea mentions that the girls are homeschooled. We later get a glimpse at exactly what this means and oh, what a glimpse it is. The lesson starts with the girls being tasked with creating “vision boards” as per Andrea’s instruction manual for life, The Secret. The conversation about aspirations soon turns to Angelina Jolie, whom both Tess and Alexis see as a role model. And they have their valid reasons – “her husband” and “her hot bod” do not count as admirable qualities, unfortunately.

4. The interview with Vanity Fair’s Nancy Jo Sales. You know it’s going to go spectacularly wrong, when Tess asks “And there’s no way this could go wrong?” and Alexis answers with an assured “No.” This interview yields some even more hilarious results later on in the episode, but the answers Alexis gives to the journalist, whether genuine or edited to sound that way, are so entertaining, that they automatically earn a spot on the chart. To give you an idea, after being asked about her life, Alexis explains, biting back tears “My main destiny in life is to be a leader. I’m ready to start setting a great example.”

The Bing Ring Is Vapid, Materialistic And That’S How It Was Intended

Sofia Coppola Emma Watson Katie Chang Israel Broussard

The Bling Ring is a glittery, beautiful and shallow piece of commodity culture. So say the film’s reviewers at least, forgetting that, to some extent, that’s what it was intended to be. While critics from USA Today and The Los Angeles Times extend the valid objection that the film never delves into the deeper reasons behind four La teens’ real life crime spree, which inspired the film, they forget that that was never what Sofia Coppola set out to do.

In an interview with Bmftv at the Cannes Film Festival, the director talks about her motives behind making the movie, which mostly revolve around the absurd nature of the whole story. It’s no wonder then that The Bling Ring never tries to explain away or legitimize the actions of the fictional gang of would-be thieves or their real life counterparts. “I thought it was interesting and kind of absurd,” says Coppola about the Vanity Fair article that inspired the Emma Watson, Katie Chang and Israel Broussard starrer.

All of the characters in this – particularly Emma Watson’s fame obsessed Nicki – are delusional and outright obnoxious. But the film’s goal isn’t to make them likable. It’s satire. Granted, it isn’t particularly deep satire, but anyone familiar with the original televised version of the story, Pretty Wild, would know that there isn’t a whole lot of substance to grab onto in the first place. On the other hand, like Coppola’s previous work, The Bling Ring is flashy, creatively shot, simply beautiful. And, while it may not be running for any screenplay awards, it isn’t hard to just sit back and enjoy it for what it is, chuckling occasionally at some of Nicki’s gems (most of them taken directly from Alexis Neiers in Pretty Wild).

Laura Linney Urges Women Mentor And Share Experiences At 40th Annual Women In Film Awards

Laura Linney Sofia Coppola George Lucas

The 2013 Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards were held in Beverly Hills this past Wednesday night and attracted a number of both female and male supporters of equality in the film industry. The Big C actress Laura Linney was on hand to accept the Lucy Award for excellence in film, as well as give a sort of “state of affairs” speech on gender equality.

"As an actress in film, it is very easy to become isolated just due to the ratio of gender inequality that exists," 49-year-old Linney said, via AceShowbiz. "Rarely do you have a scene with other women, very few women are on the crew, and what few female executives arrive tend to keep to themselves. You have fewer and fewer women to turn to for help or advice, and information is not easily shared."

She urged the members of the audience to stand against the problem of isolation by reaching out and mentoring other women: “Reach out to a younger actress, or junior executive, or crew person, or office worker or a student," she said. Take them to lunch, put in the time to talk and learn what they are encountering. Listen to their observations. Share with them your insight and your mistakes and share information so that our experiences are not wasted."

The Bling Ring Hits Cannes, Critics Are Divided

Sofia Coppola Emma Watson Katie Chang Israel Broussard

Finally, after weeks and weeks of anticipation, Cannes kicked off yesterday and European audiences got to enjoy enormously hyped up films like Baz Luhrmann’s Gatsby and, of course, Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring. Naturally, it being a film about greedy, self-obsessed teenagers, the critics couldn’t wait to sink their teeth into it, mostly blasting the flick with the usual objection – that much like its protagonists, The Bling Ring is pretty, but shallow. And yes, Emma Watson’s American accent (which sounded pretty decent to us) hasn’t been spared any of the heat either. One rather unexpected critic, however, has been Alexis Neiers – an actual member of the LA Burglar Bunch, the Bling Ring or whatever the group is being called lately. Neiers recently blasted the film on Twitter (where else?) calling it trashy and inaccurate.

And what was Coppola’s response? It might very well be both, but the woman never set out to make a documentary. Whether because of that statement, or just for publicity reasons, Neiers seems to have cooled down since and recently tweeted at Emma Watson to “break a leg” in Cannes and that there were “no hard feelings”.

As for the luck in Cannes, early reviews point that once again, a Sofia Coppola film will have critics divided. It’s pretty and entertaining, but lacks the poignant social commentary that people seemed to expect. We’d venture to say that the film should still be immensely entertaining though, so you might want to get yourself to a theatre, before the spoilers start flooding the internet.

Emma Watson Stuns In Christopher Kane At Cannes Film Festival [Pictures]

Emma Watson did warn us all that she had a selection of stunning outfits for Cannes on Twitter earlier this month, and boy was she right. The 23-year-old attended the photo-call for Sofia Coppola's new movie The Bling Ring on Thursday (May 16, 2013) in a flashy Christopher Kane ensemble.

The former Harry Potter actress flashed her midriff in a matching crop top and above the knee skirt with feather detailing. The maroon color perfectly complimented Watson's complexion and her sophisticated court shoes finished off the whole outfit. Earlier in the day, Emma was seen wearing a classic beige trench coat as she made her way to the photo-call - this despite the blazing Cannes heat.

Is 'The Bling Ring' Already The Coolest Movie Of The Year? [Trailer & Pictures]

Emma Watson Sofia Coppola Alexis Neiers Leslie Mann Gavin Rossdale Roman Coppola Paris Hilton

A still from Sofia Coppola's The Bling RingA still from Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring

A new extended trailer for The Bling Ring - Sofia's Coppola's tale of youthful debauchery in the social media generation - has hit the web. It centers on the true story of a group of Los Angeles kids who used the internet to track their favorite celebrities and subsequently rob their homes when the A-listers were out of town. The teaser trailer gave us the first look at Emma Watson as the ringleader (based on Alexis Neiers), though the new clip offers an insight into her back story, home life and rationale for the thefts.

A movie from the same director as Lost In Translation and the slick Somewhere (also the sister of Moonrise Kingdom writer Roman Coppola) was always going to look good on-screen and the Bling Ring doesn't appear to disappoint. Essentially, the movie tells the story of America's addiction to celebrity culture and the Facebook, Google Maps and social media elements will no doubt appeal to those who enjoyed David Fincher's The Social Network and, perhaps, Harmony Korine's recent Spring Breakers. Something we didn't anticipate is Coppola's use of humor in the The Bling Ring, particularly from Watson's Nikki and Katie Chang's Rebecca. The trailer ends with one of the thieves asking a cop what Lindsay Lohan's reaction was to her stuff being taken. Another nice touch is the cameo of Paris Hilton, a real life victim of 'The Bling Ring.'

Second Trailer For 'The Bling Ring' Raises Expectations For Cannes

Emma Watson Israel Broussard Sofia Coppola

The Cannes Film Festival is fast approaching and, in preparation, the second trailer for Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring has been released. If, for some reason, you don’t know by now anticipated film chronicles a string of Hollywood burglaries, commited by a group of L.A. teenagers back in 2010 and is based on true events. The first trailer made it pretty obvious that we’d get copious eye-fulls of shoes, bags, clothes and luxury in typical Coppola style, but this new teaser also reveals some more of the story. And, if we’re reading it correctly, it’s going to be all about exposing the culture which idolizes luxury and the rich. Oh, goodie! Well, it’s also going to be about some vapid teenagers, which the cast seem to have done a surprisingly good job portraying, from the limited glimpses we’ve gotten.

“I think this situation is a huge learning lesson for me,” says Watson in a thoroughly convincing LA twang. “To grow and expand as a spiritual human being. I wanna lead a country one day for all I know.” And if you’ve seen anything about the real-life robberies, you’re probably astonished at the resemblance as well. Israel Broussard stars alongside Watson as her partner in crime and also seems to be doing a spectacular job at it, if the trailer is anything to go by. If you’re not excited about this yet, you probably will be, after seeing the clip below.

Emma Watson Celebrates Birthday With, Err, Emma Watson Pinatas!

Emma Watson Sofia Coppola

Emma Watson's pals went the whole hog for her 23rd birthday in New York recently, making 23 pinatas all themed on different periods in the actress's life. Her friends spent several hours creating the papier-mache models, one for each of her 23 years, for the bash in New York last week, reports The Sun.

Watson was predictably dumbstruck after arriving at the bash. A source said: "Emma was gobsmacked when she arrived at the party to see all the pinatas. There was everything from her as a child, and as Hermione in the Harry Potter films, to her in the Chanel advert a couple of years ago. They had even gone to the effort of stuffing a few of the pinatas with sweets and treats, so Emma could smash them open." There were even a few "naughty male body parts" on one of the piñatas, themed on her role in Sofia Coppola's upcoming crime-drama 'The Bling Ring.' The movie sees Watson play an unruly teen who forms a group of thieves targeting celebrity's in Los Angeles.

The film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, though it will not be eligible for the big prize, the Palme d'Or. The actress recently spoke to MTV News about getting into character as the raunchy 'Nicki' and taking some pole dancing lessons "[Co-star] Claire [Julien] actually taught me a bunch of moves. You have to be very physically strong to hold your own body weight, and I really didn't have that core strength initially, so that was pretty intimidating. And, also, I'm just a really awkward sexy person, so basically the scene turned into me just messing around because I think Sofia thought, 'We need to give her a break.'"

This Years' Cannes Lineup Boasts Diversity And Supports Struggling Creators

Steven Spielberg Ryan Gosling Sofia Coppola

Once again the Cannes Film Festival will bring together filmmakers and actors from around the world and across generations. The festival roster this year features 19 films and while some, like Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, are glitzy LA productions, there is a lot of world cinema in the lineup as well, especially from countries where film production is notoriously difficult and rare. This is part of the festival’s mission. Artistic director Thierry Fremaux said this Thursday that the festival aims to protect talent in countries where freedom of speech is threatened. This mission statement seems particularly apt for this year’s edition, which features such films as Chadian work “Grigris” and Chinese film “A Touch of Sin.” The Mexican narco-flick “Heli” highlights the endurance of family and love in crisis.

The lineup also features a number of titles, which have been hyped up for months now, such as Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra.” For the full festival lineup, visit the official Cannes website.

Cannes Festival Lineup Brings Together Spielberg, Coppola And Many More

Steven Spielberg Ryan Gosling Sofia Coppola

The lineup for the 66th edition of the glamorous Cannes Film Festival has been announced and it’s a pretty impressive one. Some of the highlights include lexander Payne’s road-trip pic “Nebraska,” Joel and Ethan Coen’s ’60s-set folk-music-themed “Inside Llewyn Davis,” Nicolas Winding Refn’s dark-edged revenge thriller “Only God Forgives” and James Gray’s ’20s-set drama “The Immigrant”.

This will be a big year for Cannes, with Steven Spielberg finally returning to the festival as jury president, and a lot of the festival picks are pretty much unmissable. One such film is the HBO-produced Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra”, which Spielberg himself directed. The festival will also host the premiere of Nicholas Reft’s follow-up to Cannes favorite “Drive,” “Only God Forgives,” starring Ryan Gosling as a British gangster hiding in Bangkok’s criminal underworld. The film was backed and co-produced by two Paris based film giants, Wild Bunch and Gaumont and the two studios will share international sales. But, more importantly, new Ryan Gosling flick? Count us in! Oh, and let's not forget Sofia Coppola’s highly anticipated glitzy crime tale “The Bling Ring”. There will certainly be lots to see and a lot of tough competition for the golden palms this year.

Of course, many more worthwhile productions will be making a debut during the festival, which will gather celebrities and industry professionals in the city of Cannes between 15th and 26th May.

Emma Watson Wears Provocative 'Cut Out' Dress In GQ Cover Shoot

Emma Watson Sofia Coppola

Emma Watson appears in arguably her most provocative photo-shoot yet, in the latest issue of Britain's GQ magazine. The 22-year-old - who stars in Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring - wears a revealing cut-out dress for the cover image, similar to that worn by Julia Roberts in her classic 1990 movie Pretty Woman.

Dressed as her character Nikki in The Bling Ring, Watson pulls down the dress even further to reveal a tattoo on her hip. She also reveals ink on her left wrist and clutches an iced coffee as she stares down the camera lens. Watson - still best known for her turn as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies - plays a young L.A. thief in the new movie, which sparked plenty of buzz at film festivals. "When I read the script and I realised that essentially it was a meditation on fame and what it's become to our society, I had to do it," she said in the accompanying interview with GQ, adding, "The character is everything that I felt strongly against - she's superficial, materialistic, vain, amoral. She's all of these things and I realised that I hated her. How do you play someone you hate? But I found it really interesting and it gave me a whole new insight into what my job or my role as an actress could be."

The movie is based on the true story of the 'Bling Ring' or 'The Hollywood Hills Burglar Bunch', who were finally arrested in 2009 after a string of break-ins at the homes of famous including Orlando Bloom and Paris Hilton. The gang stole expensive jewellery and clothes while the celebrities were out of town, or attending events in Los Angeles.

Julianne Moore; The Latest Celebrity Victim Of Robbery

Julianne Moore Kate Moss Paris Hilton Sofia Coppola Emma Watson Orlando Bloom Megan Fox Rachel Bilson

On October 1st of this year Julianne Moore had a police report filed regarding missing jewellery of hers amounting to $127,000.

From June until the end of August, this summer, Ms Moore was having her apartment renovated and it was during this time that she had 10 pieces of jewellery stolen, including, according to ABC News, a $33,000 Cartier platinum and diamond bracelet, as well as four Cartier watches. While her home was being renovated between 15 and 25 construction workers had access to the entire property, but as yet no arrests have been made.

Julianne Moore isn't the only poor celebrity to be a beacon for robberies. Paris Hilton had $2m of jewellery stolen in 2008 and Kate Moss had precious artworks stolen from her home while she was in the building. Furthermore, where Ms Moore's unfortunate robbery seems to be a crime of opportunity, Rachel Bilson, Orlando Bloom, Megan Fox and Lindsay Lohan have all been the victims of “The Burglary Bunch” in Hollywood, CA, who especially target celebrities.

The Virgin Suicides Review

Very Good
The Virgin Suicides is a dark comedy that embodies some twisted views on suburban family life and the true lack innocence of adolescence. First-time writer and director Sofia Coppola, daughter of Godfather creator Francis Ford Coppola, proves to us that she's not really an actress (see The Godfather Part III), but that she does have the family knack for provocative movie directing. The movie is based upon Jeffrey Eugenides' novel, The Virgin Suicides, a detective story about five sisters who mysteriously commit suicide and the investigation by four neighborhood boys who had fallen in love with them. Coppola, however, transforms the movie into her own allegory of five adolescent girls who suffer from ruthlessly suppressed lives, their desperate plea for self-expression, and the tragedy that besets their wretched existence.

Set in the mid-seventies, the plot follows the Lisbon family, with James Woods, a physics teacher at the local high school, as the scatter brained father, and Kathleen Turner as the uncommonly strict mother. Their five daughters are beautiful, naturally blonde, and the desire of every boy in the neighborhood. When the youngest, Cecilia, mysteriously attempts suicide, psychiatrist Danny DeVito recommends that she be allowed to interact more socially, especially with boys. So the Lisbon girls are introduced to the boys of the neighborhood, who have already been watching the girls from afar through half-opened window shades, binoculars, and telescopes. At a party in Cecilia's honor, the boys witness a tragedy that shocks them out of their wits. As a result, the Lisbons fall into a deep suppression shutting out the rest of the world by retreating into their own inner sanctum. It appears they will never recover until Trip Fontaine (Josh Hartnett), the high school heartthrob, pursues the unattainable Lux (Kirsten Dunst). He attempts to ask her to the prom, but the only way her mother will allow him to take Lux is if all the girls go together. For the first time, the girls will venture out of the home to interact socially in an environment other than school.
