On Instagram Ryan Case, who directed the episode, shared a photo of actor Jackson Millarker on set and wrote: ‘This is Jackson Millarker. He’s 8 years old, from Atlanta, and just happens to be transgender. He plays Lily’s friend Tom in this week’s Modern Family and he’s wonderful. One of the many reasons I love being a part of this show.’

It’s not yet known if Millarker will feature in any more episodes of the series, but throughout its eight season run ‘Modern Family’ has been praised for addressing LGBT issues.
